UCONN and US a recurring nightmare!

I've stated many times I became a fan during the norm years,

Honestly you deserve some sort of award for actually becoming a fan during the Norm years because you might be the only one in existence.

Lol I was young, but remember getting excited when they made the big east tournament with Amase, because back then it wasn't a guarantee to make the BET, so when they got in to that I would get excited.

One of my first years as a fan i remember us winning a game in the BET and coming very close to winning another one, losing to Marquette I believe in a close one.

Youre not the only one who became a fan during the Norm years. I went to my first SJU game when I was 13, Holiday Festival vs. NC State who was ranked. SJU won, I became a super fan, and now have 2 degrees from the school. If SJU loses that game my life would probably be a lot better right now.

I became a fan during the Jarvis years but my first game was during the Norm Years. When I was younger I could never convince either of my parents (uconn fans) to take the trip down to the city. When I was 16 i got a Christmas gift to go on a bus trip from Hartford to see Uconn vs St. John's at the Garden, we got killed but I was just in awe of finally being at a St. John's game. Now I go to about 5-7 games a year plus the games we play at Prov.

I wouldn't say the UConn fans are uneducated, but anyone from the state pretty much freely jumps on the bandwagon. That's just how it is because they are the only show in town, no pro sports teams.

I still remember my first St. John's game, which happened to be against UConn at Gampel back in 2002, when I was a freshman at UConn. I walked up with my Marcus Hatten Jersey on, and literally someone threw a bottle at me and another person grabbed me in a headlock lol. For most UConn fans, you can't enjoy the game unless you're drunk.

They are pretty much the same as Syracuse fans were in the early years of the BE. SU fans are among the most knowledgeable in college basketball even though they learned, at the foot of Boeheim, to cry about every call. That still gets annoying from a crowd that knows better.
UConn was much worse than SU was at the beginning. With no tradition at all, they had no idea of the game, they weren't winning , and they were boors at the Garden. They had no sportsmanship reference at all.
Back in 2000 I went to a STJ game with UConn at the Garden. We sat in some real nice seats. The old guy next to me wore what I imagined was a World Series ring. He seemed about 70 so I thought to ask when he played for the Yankees. He exploded to me and said, "I'm a member of the National Championship UConn Huskies". Because of his painful and dismissive outburst of mis-directed pride, and, being an a-hole with a wry sense of humor, I responded, "I was at the game last March in St. Pete; what position did you play?" He retorted, "I'm the team dentist". Naturally. I let it drop. but he was icy to me for the balance of the evening. We happened to win by 5 and it was a nice win over the defending first time national championship team which was not a very an unusual occurrence in the BE at the time.
On the way out of what, to me was another average great BE game, he let me know that I should go procreate with myself. I still laugh about it. He was so zealous and so unsportsmanlike. They are not at all like that now.
UCon fans have evolved and they know the game for lots of years. They are noisy but good for them. We were noisy when we won; most fans are. I hope they win tonight for them, for some good kids who stayed with their team, for eastern basketball, for all the underdogs, and for the Big East where their team was spawned and fledged. They are still a Big East root team until the new kids take over.
They are easy to root for, both the boys and the girls. Remember, ND dumped us for more money, UConn didn't.

Jack,

If I can add to the above (and Avon please correct me if I am wrong):

After Kieta was disciplined for the Pittsburgh incident, Kieta, or one associated with him informed the NCAA that he had been receiving a stipend from StJohns which violated NCAA rules. That information lead the NCAA to place StJohns on probation during November of his first season which further handicapped Roberts' efforts.

Otis, the stipend was legal still because the players were living in apartments off campus and they all were receiving it. It was about 1,200 a month they took home, but it decreased from the 1990s and early 2000s when they were paid closer to 2,000 a month. It was a great recruiting tool.
Abe was receiving additional funds "under the table" and that led to the investigation, which in turn led to us being put on probation.
Apologies for the late reply, was off line all weekend.

Haaa I remember that game. That was Norm's 1st big win and there was actually a thread on this site from someone wanting to give Norm an extension after the game . lol

Seriously, WTF. If you don't know the difference between the stipend and the Keita allowance why are you even posting.

And why would Avon know so much about what was going on around the Pittsburgh incident. Wait, don't answer that. ;)

Now a serious question. Since Pitt I've been led to believe that since STJ has housing for such a small percentage of their total enrollment they actually could still offer the stipend but the school made all the kids move on to campus after the incident and have kept it that way. Anyone know if that's true? I guess it doesn't matter since I don't see the school reverting back to the stipend systeam anyway.
