Two words for Mo Harkless...

:fight: In my opinion if Moe left this year he would be making the saming mistake as Omar Cook made when he left SJU prematurely. He is nowhere near ready to compete in the NBA.

I wouldn't go that far. Mo has way more potential and upside than Omar ever had. Plus he's not a risk for any team to draft. He's a good kid, not a knucklehead.

Omar was in a rush to get out of here, I don't sense that with Moe.

You guys are all idiots, I know nobody but we all know the NBA drafts on potential not what they do in college or high school. What are reason was Eddy Curry drafted so high by Chicago? In my opinion, Mo is going to test the NBA draft and if he can get a guarentee of a first round pick he will leave. The difference between college basketball and college football is the bball players just want to go in the first round for the guarenteed money while players like Matt Barkley want to drafted number 1 overall and win national championships. We all know that college is a joke for D1 athletes. Sport Management is a made up major that colleges offer for athletes. If they lose Harkless next year, they are in big trouble. I hope I am wrong but I don't think Lavin is coming back, he knows this job is impossible to compete for championships against big state school who get the best players.

I don't believe the job is impossible at all. Lavin did a good, workmanlike job last year and the results were plain to see. He also made some mistakes which bit him in the ass. He wasn't able ti do the same kind of job this year and the results have suffered. I do believe Steve has to do a better job of showing that he's in this for the long haul. Instability just kills recruiting. Invisibility leads to impressions of instability. As I've said if he's been cleared to fly around and saunter through airports and hotels chasing recruits I can't see why he can't be seen in public while things are going south. I wouldn't be shocked if he packed it in either and that would leave SJU on the top of the horses ass heap.

I think you should coach. Your posts too frequently display an inflated sense of knowledge. The man has CANCER and instead of bagging the entire season went out and is recruiting hard. His mistake is he was left with an incredibly unbalanced roster where everyone would leave after this year, and got off to a later start than his competitors in recruiting these kids. OF COURSE HE HAD TO TAKE RISKS. Ugghhh.. responding to your lunacy is a waste of type.

All coaches take risks but very few of them wind up with six man rosters. If you can pinpoint where I've been wrong feel free to prove it and suggest an alternative.be my guest. A quick fact:..:
Nuri was NEVER a PG and I have no idea what Steve saw that would make him think so, He did pass on other points assuming Anderson would come and got burned. There are lots more but the general theme was that not enough attention was paid to a fallback position resulting in Greene and Moe playing out of position and Leaving Gift without backup. Not entirely different from Norm having six 2Gs. Steve wasn't left with an unbalanced roster - it was empty. Extra attention to balance was the key to recovery and we still went into the season with no PG and no Center. Signing a few solid citizen types to fill in would have spared us the anguish over manpower. On the plus side we've been extremely lucky with injuries. Norm always passed on decent players in hopes that blue chippers would pan out. He was able to get enough talent out of the leftover bin to compete and eventually make the tourney. I hope Steve has more up his sleeve than his arm because leftovers can be humbling and time consuming to coach.

I agree. I want nothing but the best for him and i want him to be rich beyond his wildest dreams. if he were to be a high draft pick this year he should leave for the nba; but he's not ready yet. He's best served by staying another year. He ain't ready for the NBA. he's actually in a good position at St. John's because he is/should be the focal point of the offense. He gets his shots in and he can demonstrate his ability to the nba scouts.

He will be a small forward in the nba. small forwards need to be able to hit the outside shot at the next level to get any playing time. While he has solid shooting form, he just needs to improve on the consistency. Moe is shooting 21% from the three point line at the college level right now. His free-throw shooting percentage is 65%. Those two numbers right there show he needs to improve dramatically if he wants to have a long nba career. NBA coaches are not big proponents of letting guys figure it out on the court because their own coaching jobs are at stake. Coaches don't have the luxury of time to allow small forwards playing time when they can't shoot. They aren't going to give big minutes to small forwards than can't shoot well enough, it's just a fact.

Case in point that should be used to explain to Moe: Derrick Williams, is now a rookie small forward in the NBA on the MN Timberwolves. He is 6'8''. His freshman year at Arizona he shot 25% from the three-point line and 68% from the free throw line (Do those statistics sound familiar to anyone? i.e. see Moe Harkless, freshman, St. John's). Fast forward a year: Derick Williams in his sophomore year, he shot a whopping 57% from the three point line, hitting 42 of 74 shots. He also improved his free throws, moving that up to 75%. And guess what happened to this athletic 6'8'' player that can hit the outside shot? DRAFTED #2 OVERALL as a SOPHOMORE. Instant riches...
Moe is/can be very similar to him.

Basically the point is that 6'8'' small forwards that can't shoot well enough are a dime a dozen in the NBA and don't get big playing time (and thus big contracts). It's a free market system and there are lots and lots of of talented 6'8'' guys that can shoot. 6'8'' guys are easily replaced. Heck, even 6'10'' guys can hit the outside shot now....

Derick Williams is proof in the pudding that staying one more year can dramatically help your draft status.

Moe has to improve his shot, improve his left-handed handle, and put on some weight, and show he can pass the ball a bit as well... and then fame and fortune will make a beaten path to his door.... It's there for him for the taking. He just has to want it and work his tail off this off-season to show the improvement. Derick Williams is a perfect example of what can be accomplished.

Good luck Moe, we are all rooting for you and we are all curious as heck how it'll all turn out. You'll have a lot of fans as you transition from college to pros. We want you to make good decisions for yourself. This isn't about crazy St. John's fans/boosters trying to look out for what is best for our own college program, it's about looking out for what is best for you. We'll be rooting for you for a long time. We just want the best for you.

Anyway... i'm done patronizing... all you posters out there all know this already.... i just felt like getting away from work for a bit... peace.

Plenty of kids in the NBA stay a year if they think it will get them from late first to the lottery. You can almost double the size of your first contract by moving from 30th($2.82 mill first three years) to 13th($5.32 mill), More than triple it by getting to pick 8 ($7.6 mill). Gotta get to pick 4 to get guaranteed $10 mill. Moe will base his decision on what is important to him and his personal assessment of his situation. It's a few months before we'll know.
