Two words for Mo Harkless...

The deeper we get into the season, the more clear it becomes that Mo is a special kid with a ton of talent. No question we'll be watching him in the NBA sometime in the future.

That said, he's going to face a tough decision about the NBA this spring. FWIW, I think he's better served to stick around, get a little bigger and more experienced and prove he can dominate game in and game out. Admittedly, I have a selfish interest in seeing him stay at St. John's for at least another year.

I have a feeling Mo will take some shots here when he goes through the necessary process of exploring the NBA option, but before the chaos begins in earnest, I'd like to send a simple message: thank you.

Mo is that first NYC kid to take a chance and commit to the program. He helped open the door for the rest of the recruiting class. He seems to be a leader on and off the court.

We took a beating today, but it's impossible not to be optimistic about the way the program is rebuilding – from the staff right through the rest of the rotation. He's a big part of that and I hope it's remembered when the Mo-to-the-NBA talk heats up.

Mo was an important building block. I hope we see him here for another year or two.

I'm not expert but that looks like more than two words.

He wouldn't be a first rounder this year.

Would be shocked if he left, I wouldn't lose much sleep over it

And I would not be shocked if he left.
He will be offered the opportunity to make a lot of money, and not knowing his family situation that can easily be a huge reason to leave.
Whatever happens, and believe me it would be a huge step backwards for the team offensively if he left as I do not believe there is anyone on our radar who would come close to replicating his numbers nor will Amir or Dominic have Mo's offensive abilities in 9 months, they are very different players, he was a key reason for Coach Lavin's first recruiting class being so good.

I don't know if anyone follows Nate on twitter but he had some interesting comments on a story Zagoria wrote about Moe possibly testing the waters.

The decision will be made between Harkless, his family, Blue and Lavin which is exactly the way it should be, not based on media rumors. If they all figure it's in his best interest, then he'll go. I think he has another year to work on things and that is likely in his interest to be a lottery pick but that's something for them to decide. Regardless, he'll be representing SJU at the next level at some point soon.

im not sure he would even be drafted if he came out this year. there's some guys that didnt come out last year because of the nba labor issue so theres even more talented players than usual. how many nbs teams are there like 32? thats 64 draft picks. is he one of the top 64 players in college bball? besides if he were on a good team he wouldnt be putting up the gaudy numbers he is at st. johns. he's the tallest guy out of all 6 players so of course he will get rebounds. him and harrison are the only ones that can shoot so of course he's going to get a lot of shots and score a lot of point. he made a good decision by not going to uconn because if he did no one would be having this conversation about him going pro. he needs to hit the gym, develop some man muscles, learn to shoot f.t.'s learn to play defense before he's a 1st round draft choice. im not saying he wont get there but in my opinion he has a long way to go to be a high pick

He's one of the few players in college ball with the highest ceiling. He'll be an nba star when he gets his body together, and works on some of his moves and shooting a bit more. I think he's easily on the cusp of the first round now and potential-wise he's easy first rounder. One more year and he's likely lottery pick.

I agree in that he needs to bulk up to play against NBA players. That is his biggest handicap at present. But some folks that scout also see work to be done in his aggressiveness and creating his shot off the dribble. That is a MUST for an NBA player at the small forward position. Those drives and dunks that wow us against college kids will be slapped in his face in the NBA game.
Finally, someone I know that handles pros does not think Moe will be drafted in the first round this year and may even be bypassed in the second. Even if he is drafted in the second round, there is no guarantee he will make a team, make any money and unless his goal is playing in a bankrupt country like Greece, his NBA career would be over before it starts.
Moe's potential is tremendous but he is neither the next Malik Sealy or Ron Artest at this point. One or two years from now he can surpass them with skills improvement and physical and mental development. That my friends comes from good teachers such as Coach D, Lavin, Rico and Coach K.

Went to the Cuse game with an NBA insider. The inside consensus right now is that he's a mid to late first rounder. Slipping to the second round is ":extremely unlikely" now but things change. As I stated before we should go forward with the understanding that he might not be here and rejoice if he is.

I don't like hearing that.

In some ways, I don't know why everybody is getting caught up in this story. At the end of the day, the situation is out of our control. If he decides to test the NBA waters (which I'm assuming he will) and an NBA scout tells him he's guaranteed to be a lottery pick, then he'd be foolish not to leave for the pro game. But after watching him for 3 months, I doubt he's going to get that guarantee at this point. The question is whether Harkless would declare for the draft if he were projected to be at the end of the first round or the start of the second. And only him and his family can make that decision.

Harkless is an outstanding talent but I dont see him ready to play in the NBA. He may go because of the money and the prospect of being a late first round or early second round selection but in my view he needs to develop his shot and put on weight. If he does he is a lottery pick next year. In the end I think part of his decision will be based upon who is coming in next year. Who commits to stj? If he doesnt see any big men, he will know he is in fot the same scenario of being outrebounded and having the game dominated by big men that we dont have. If that is the case, I see him leaving.

IMHO, all these players, in no specific order, will be taken before Mo in this years draft if the underclassman come out and this list does not include the foreign players who will be eligible.

Jordan Taylor - Wisconsin
Tyshawn Taylor - Kansas
Tu Holloway - Xavier
John Jenkins - Vandy
Marcus Denmon - Mizzou
Tim Hardaway Jr. - Michigan
Doron Lamb - Kentucky
Harrison Barnes - North Carolina
Trevor Mbakwe - Minnesota
Perry Jones - Baylor
Thomas Robinson - Kansas
Patric Young - FLorida
Kevin Jones - West Virginia
Anthony Davis - Kentucky
Jared Sullinger - Ohio St.
Tyler Zeller - North Carolina
Festus Ezeli - Vandy
Jeffrey Taylor - Vandy
Draymond Green - Mich St.
Kris Joseph - Syracuse
Hollis Thompson - Georgetown
JaMychal Green - Alabama
Jeremy Lamb - UConn

That's 23 players not included the foreign players.

If he played as hard in all his games like he did in the second half of the Duke game he would be a lottery pick(top 5). However he needs to get stronger and a quicker release on his jump shot. He has the demeanor and physical tools to be a great pro. Just needs more time.

Cant argue with most of your players, but the GM who takes tyshawn taylor before moe harkless should be fired.

Went to the Cuse game with an NBA insider.

You know what would be pretty crazy and interesting.

Any of the long time board members remember Bobre's infamous battles on redmen.com with rjrjr. They went at it back and forth like crazy sometimes.

If I remember correctly I think RJ worked for the nba or something like that.

I'm going to go out on a limb here but I think RJ is Bobre's son or something like that.

Total Star Wars Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader moment right now. LOL

The NBA insider who went to the game with Bobre could also have been Mark Jackson, no?
