Transfers SJU May Get Involved With

The St. John's basketball staff 25 year excuse, "the right guy wasn't out there". There are 50 states, Europe and elsewhere and we can't find one big?! I think we all get we are not getting a 4/5 star but this idea that there was no one out there is cover for people not getting it done. Yes, this is getting old and tired. Also. to those who want to say "well who did you want" or "who was out there" that is bs. St. John's pays the staff quite well to get out there and find those players. Not our job. Many here have loyally supported this program but really isn't it time for some results?

I think Mr. Franklin said it best:

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”
― Benjamin Franklin

Give it a rest. Many complaining posters support this team from their couch. They're also the first ones to kill an overmatched freshmen from their keyboard during his first game.

Maybe you are talking about yourself? Please don't tell other people to stop giving there opinion because it is one you do not agree with. Most of us are grown men and not your child. I merely pointed out the obvious.

The team was more productive post Sima.

Every top kid stayed.

An average of 2 plus transfers in D 1. The staff kept their top seven intact.

Many rebuilds don't produce consistent winning seasons till year four. Martin just made a good run in year five. We all know Wright needed three plus years. Recruits did not run from these programs when they lost early.

This staff has a shot moving over 500 in year three.

And we're whining because 4 points a game Williams wanted to go free agent like 700 other D1 kids.

Valid points but the sad fact is we have a tremendous hole in the middle. That hole was precariously being filled by a cross dressing thief. The one true center left and the staff has had all winter to right the ship at the 5. It has not happened for one reason or another.

When you say "staff has a shot moving over 500 in year three" from most perspectives that is no longer an option.
If they don't then they do not sign the top targets and that is priority. This team with Lovett, Ponds, Simon, Clark, Ahmed, Mussini and Owens has a "shot" at being very very good and making the NCAA. Those players deserve that pivot player that can make a difference. It doesn't need to be an impact player but one who serviceable within the team framework. This is M&M's chance to show they can field a complete team which is something we at SJU consistently fail to do. We will know within a few days.

Spot on 72. This is an opinion shared by many on this board. Also. don't forget, we will likely lose ML and SP after this season, probably others. The window to capitalize is small. This is not like years ago where good kids stay for 4 years.

I share your disappointment. I like Owens , but hopefully he will put on weight and not be a foul machine. Hopefully Yakwe improves, but he was underwhelming. I agree, staff had all year to add the missing piece ,a competent big, that knows how to play th game, and is a banger.. I expect Clark to be fine at the 4. But that 1 piece, as you said maybe the difference between winning an NCAA game or not making the tourney. And you always have to factor in for injuries. That said, we are getting there. But, there is no denying, our recruiting results this year has been below par, so far. You have to figure , between the 4 star bigs, JUCOs, and grad transfers, we could have nabbed one. We will see. On the other hand, give me Kante, The SDSU kid and Rice on the coaching staff and I will be satisfied.

"Our recruiting results this year have been below par, so far"?
They haven't been below par - THEY HAVE BEEN ZERO SO FAR!!

That's another reason to be disappointed w our recruiting so far.. We don't just need an impact big, but have to prepare for next years departures. Dixon is a start. We will see how this year pans out.

You can't have a "0" in any recruiting year. It sets a program back dramatically. That is where we are headed. Its a shame because we had momentum in this area.

Yes - our recruiting during 2016-17 for the 2017-18 season has yielded ZERO!!!
Clark and Simon are part of the class but were recruited prior to 2016-17
Kante can't be mentioned - he hasn't committed to us yet
Our recruiting during the 2016-17 school year has yielded ABSOLUTELY ZERO so far
Yes, we did get Dixon as a transfer but he won't suit up for another year
But, for the 2017-18 team, we have added ZERO new players during this school year
We have plenty of open spots- I've got to believe that the staff anticipated some/all of them
Very disappointing!!!

We recruited them for the 2017 season. Delaware said we can't go O for a recruiting year and that is simply not true. Some people just won't be happy until we get a commitment every 2 weeks and that just isn't how it works. You do not have to put an emphasis on the caps to make me realize that you are in that " some people" category. :)

72,

It will take a lot of improvement to go from an eight seed to a four seed and an NCAA team. I'm optimistic that the staff will do what Mullin said they would do to improve their D and turn a dumb first year group into an improved second year group. I'm hopeful that Simon will be our best player next season. Clark will help too. It is still a stretch to say they will become an NCCA lock.

There's been plenty of missteps by the staff, but overall they have the team trending up.

I don't think it's fair to discount Clark, Simon for this years recruiting efforts while at same time not counting DIxon.

One of the sit out transfer years has to count

Happy - I respect your knowledge and appreciate your posts. But I can't believe that you (or anyone else) can think our staff has done well on the recruiting front since we brought in Clark and Simon. I will be the first to say that we have recruited extremely well since Mullin and staff have come on board.. But, to not be able to bring in one competent "big" kid to supplement a pretty good roster of talent for next year is a major disappointment IMO.

Thanks for the kind words but in all fairness we really only had 1 scholarship to allocate during the year until Sima decided to transfer . 1 turned into 4 with the transfers and it's really late to be entering in to anyone's recruitment for 2017 much less a competent big man . I have said many times on here that we should have recruited Hasahn French instead of Zach Brown and that was a mistake by the staff. Btw Kante is competent ( not spectacular ) but fits into what we need and that's rebounding and defense. I have been told by a couple of people that he is coming and I have no reason to doubt these people . The plan all along was to load up for a big 2018 class and i will be on the disappointed wagon as well if we swing and miss. :)

All of this unrest clearly boils down to the fact that we have not added another big for next year. We all have varying degrees of panic, anger and anxiety..... manifesting in varying degrees of attacks/comments.

The bottom line is Matt and Mullin have done a masterful job recruiting since they stepped on campus. They were in an impossible situation and surpassed expectations. While not landing a another big for next year is absolutely a significant fail, it is essentially their first fail. Recruiting is hard. I would imagine there were big men they could have grabbed and hyped just to take the heat off themselves (i.e. Lavin), but they opted to be prudent. My guess is that Matt and Mullin are, themselves, disappointed they haven't landed that big.

Agree. Every program loses kids, but, although Sima was disappointing last year, I subscribe to the notion that big kids take a few years to develop. I looked forward to him progressing over his last two seasons & agree his leaving abruptly complicated things. 6'11 guys with reasonable athleticism don't fall off trees & warrant time. I may be in minority, but I thought in the long run Siama's loss could not be dismissed so easily. Good point on French, unfortunately Brown proved to be a too big a risk. Hey staff sometimes is wrong like the rest of us.

I also believe Matt, being so confident about landing a grad big & communicating such to a number of people, leaves us all disappointed. Kante joining SJU is the common read & am hoping he will be one of those blue collar four year players.

While not landing a another big for next year is absolutely a significant fail, it is essentially their first fail.

That's not true. They whiffed on the 2017 class which is why they are now scrambling to add more bodies.
