Tough question….. of those who can, who stays?

I can't speak for anyone else, but what I've said is to show me anything that Luis does very well. I'm not talking about occasionally very well, I'm talking about consistently very well.

And of course we're better off with him playing well and under control. But the problem is that he has played not well and not under control much more often than not. If he had, he'd be playing a lot more and we'd be in a much better position for making the tournament.

Cherry picking a few good games or moments over the course of a season does not change the fact that he has been a huge disappointment.
Young, talented player's #1 problem is almost always consistency. That's not unique to RJ.

RJ Luis with a full offseason (including rest for the shin splints) and real development planned out carefully by Pitino and this staff could unlock him. Unfortunately a lot of RJ's mistakes are boneheaded basketball decisions. Not passing at the right time, forcing a shot, taking a poor route to the basket, over dribbling. These are fundamentals that Pitino talks about. I think with a real offseason and no set backs he could flourish next year.

I think we get outbid for him, but would gladly take him back.

Then so be it. Frankly, it would be very short sighted for him and his camp.

Simply because he's got a CLEAR path to a big role next year. He will get player development with a track record of success under Pitino. He won't have to learn a new system. But if he wants to go chase some money instead of seeing the value in the above situation, then best of luck to him or anyone that choses that route.

I sat next to RJ for about an hour at the Park Ave event before the season started , and spoke to him about a lot of things. One of the things he told me was that he loved Pitino, and St John's and his plan is to stay all 3 years here unless he becomes a first round pick before he graduates.

Money talks, and it is the wild wild west of the NIL now so anything can happen

Before the season is an ice age ago.

Unfortunately Sig, I feel like a lot of people have gotten in Luis's ear since then. And you know how impre$$ionable these young men can be.

Only two reasons we shouldn't* want Luis on the roster next year:
-He feels as though he is worth more than the staff is offering
-Injury concerns are legit- and will hamper his ability to develop/contribute effectively

Otherwise- he is def a player I'm excited to see grow here. Can't place a value on continuity in this age of college bball.

Luis is very talented…that’s not even susceptible to reasonable debate. He was brought in to play in an open court style and we don’t have the horses. He could be a very big part of that next year.

He’s a deflection and steals machine with a lot of potential versatility. I really want him back next year. He’s good to have to the opportunity to defend 4 positions and will be likely be either option 1A or 1B when the roster gets filled in.

I doubt there is a bidding war for him after he’s exhibited immaturity and very questionable body language. The injury and basketball IQ aren’t huge concerns to me, but there are some doubts.

I have not heard of a bidding war for RJ, but I think how much Rick wants to ration his NIL $ if he can land some portal whales seems germane. Any notion RJ is looking for a “raise” re his NIL check would be comical to me.

To be clear Monte could be right about bidding war, but I just not hear that.

I too haven't heard anything, just feel like with the kid's potential, there may be some suitors.

I see Luis’ potential & I think he’s had a couple of great games and big moments. I think he’s a menace guarding the inbounder when they press, he has a knack for grabbing big rebounds and he has a nose for the basket. He’s one of those guys who is relentless around the hoop, grabs his own offensive rebound, etc. I would personally love to have him back and think he has a very high ceiling if he can stay healthy and develop.

THAT BEING SAID…the development needs to be significant. He’s wildly inconsistent & lacks discipline. He plays with his emotions which is both good and bad. There’s been a number of times (particularly over the last couple weeks) where he scores a big bucket and then literally on the next defensive possession picks up a dumb foul. I know there aren’t really stats on this sort of thing but I swear it feels like most of the time. Same for the couple games he’s started. Pretty sure he picked up 2 quick fouls in both of the ones I recall. He seems to make errors when he gets too hyped.

Also the ball sticks on offense when Luis is in the game. He just doesn’t make quick decisions. In the half court he almost always sizes up his defender (a la Carmelo Anthony) and I swear you can see him going thru his thought process. He’ll either take him to the rim (and once Luis is driving, so far, he does not pass), he shoots the jumper (I actually really like his midrange) or he passes after far too long of a pause where he’s allowed the defense to all locate their men.

In another recent thread I said he reminds me of Josh Allen in his first couple of seasons in the NFL. He makes some amazing plays where you see genuine superstar ability but then it’s followed up by 3 of the most boneheaded plays you’ve ever seen. Hopefully like Allen we see the rapid development and he doesn’t remain such a high variance player.

Great analysis QB.
