Tonight's Dinner

Dave: "He gave tough love to his players while introducing them, said a little something about each one, saying he’s looking for them to reach that “high motor” level of effort and while they are not there yet, he and his staff will get them there. It was a bit of tough love from coach, motivating and teaching his guys in front of everyone, he knows what he's doing. He will push all the buttons to get this squad where he wants them to be."

Even if they were there, he couldn't admit it. You don't want them becoming complacent, they keep working and never stop working.

anyone else get the sense RP is trying to temper expectations? it seems like every chance he gets he's pointing out the faults. this team has been practicing since july. with one more month to go. there'd had be a significant improvement given how RP talks about the team.
Not at all, Pitino sets the bar very high for his players and coaches. Taliek Brown, Assistant Coach for Player Development, sat at the table with MJM, myself, and other fine gentlemen. He confirmed what he had told me a week ago. He works out every day because Pitino would be on him if he was not in shape.

An amazing event . I sat next to RJ Luis the whole night at dinner and he is truly a special kid . Very humble , well spoken , I can tell he comes from a great family his parents did a tremendous job with him . He loves everything about St. John’s and New York . His plan is to stay all 3 years here , but he says if he ends up being a 1 st round pick in between that time period he will make the jump .

I can not WAIT for this season !

Sitting next to Asst. Coach Bob Walsh, he echoed a similar sentiment. He said while he works out every morning anyway, in the summer Pitino told all the coaches to lose some weight since they were being so harsh on the players to do the same.

Great photos. Are Luis and Zuby that close in height in person?

I am 6’2 . I am such a basketball junkie that I am pretty good at identifying height . RJ is 6’8 all day , but he has a fro . Zuby is 6’9 for sure. Zuby , great , great kid .

The player that got the most praise , and who Rick felt was most ready out of any player was Zuby . Anyone else there will agree . Rick had something negative to say about every player ( in a good way ) but had a lot of praise for Zuby . That def means something …

One thing Rick touched on is not only do we have great talent , but these are great kids , that love the university, love their families , and love to work . Talking with the whole team that is 1,000% accurate

If Luis is a legit 6’8 we probably don’t get him all three years. I guess that’s a good problem to have.

I’ve been impressed with Zuby’s feet and quickness for his size. If he can get out and keep wings honest it bodes well for going big with Joel and just dominating the glass.

A 6'8 PG ala Magic Johnson.
Rick said he makes everyone better like Jenkins right?
So he'll play 1-4.
I don’t see him playing the 1 ever. He’s a slasher with a slow, controlled pace…a kid that can get in the lane from the wing against a SF and kick it to the corners.

From what I’ve pieced together from the numerous videos, he’s been beaten off the bounce quite a bit. So on D, lock down wings, keep smaller guards honest, and hold his own against the opposing 4. I’d sign for that right now.
