Time to Get Aggresive and Creative

I hope we stay at 10. You can't judge the future success of the league after just one year. The Big East was potentially one more G'Town and St. John's win from having sent 5 to maybe 6 teams to the NCAA this year. We HAD A WINNING RECORD against the ACC this year. Adding more teams doesn't guarantee more bids. Just like people are saying Creighton will take a drop next year b/c they are losing 4 starters, VCU, St. Louis, Dayton, etc can end up having similar drops (let's face it, none of those are exactly regular Final Four participants). Let's give the current set up a chance to work. Why kill the ability to have a round robin schedule, just to add a few "mid-majors"? Didn't anyone learn from the last expansion disaster the Big East had. Do you really want 16 teams again?

BE really took a hit this week. Reputation is everything. We get blasted by Robert Morris and all 4 tournament teams bow out before sweet 16. Let's not forget Buzz leaving Marquette and the classless pig that he is taking a shot at the BE on the way out.

The way I see conference alignment in the next 2-3 years for football schools, I think we need to get aggressive with expansion. Otherwise we will be stuck as the 7th or 8th best conference like we were this year. (Despite what many think/ hoped the A10, AAC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC and PAC 12 were all better than the BE). 8th best conference is too big of a drop off for my liking.

Call it what you want but I want 16 teams in this league by 2016. It may be audacious but give me 6 of the following and we will be a top 5 conference annually.

Davidson
Dayton
George Washington
Gonzaga
Richmond
Saint Joseph's
Saint Louis
St. Mary's
VCU
Wichita State

If we can get 6 of those 10 we'd be in very good shape. Right now the Butler's and McDermott-less Creighton's of the world just don't do it for me. Raid the A10 and grab Wichita State. Then maybe explore testing the limits of the Big East name by making it a coast-to-coast conference with Gonzaga and St Mary's. Realistically though if I had to chose 6 it'd be Dayton, George Washington, Saint Joe's, Saint Louis, VCU, and Wichita State.

If only they hired Marillac. My post form May 2012:

If we split, I'd like to see a visionary put together a massive conference with an east and a west division. Gonzaga is a must get...no two ways about it. Dayton and Xavier are also no-brainers. Dayton always posts one of the highest attendance figures in the country. I'd also add Wichita State (great attendance, good history, NO football) and Creighton (awesome attendance, good history, always good teams).

East
St. John's
Georgetown
Providence
Seton Hall
Villanova
Xavier
Dayton

West
Gonzaga
Wichita St.
Creighton
St. Louis
Butler
Depaul
Marquette

My conference had 8 teams in this tournament. Last year Wichita State was a Final Four team and St. Louis was a Sweet 16 team. Also in 2012, I called Wichita State a "Must get."

I am hoping to prove that one wrong :) I'm not so much looking to go forward as I am digging myself out of a hole.

Ha! I'm sure you will get out of that hole!

I would recommend you for the position. That is a great conference.

I've never seen school presidents give up some of their share of TV money unless there is pressure from their partners, so unless Fox pushes them I don't see any expansion happening soon (wins really seem less significant than how many people are watching). After this season, it seems obvious to me that if/when expansion occurs the main criteria shouldn't be recent success but rather the commitment to the program by the school and their fan base. Granted this was their first season, but Creighton blew me away with their attendance at the BET and away games. They didn't just buy tickets to their session, they bought them for all of the sessions and were very much the home team. These type of programs want to be in the BE and put their money where their mouths are. Dayton fits that criteria, but I'm unfamiliar with the others so I can't say what their story is.

We have a TV deal and the Garden, the only way we keep those is by getting programs that are committed and have a huge following, otherwise who cares how well the teams perform on the court. When I watch the tournament I'm just as interested in how many people are in the stands as I am about the game when it comes to these discussions.

The new BE Commissioner whate ver her name is is on record as saying they are not looking at expansion for the near future. Expansion will most likely come in 2 to 3 yrs or once all the conference musical chairs are finished

I would hire Steve Donahue , the former Boston College coach to join our bench. Thoughts?

Yes. Don't repeat yourself! If you are going to hire another bench guru to assist with coaching you may as well hire a new coach! It is not like we have any recruits to lose. LOL!

I would call that Conference BIG AMERICA.. Good Selection of teams.

I think we need to add St Louis and Dayton.
Let's see what happens to the AAC. UCONN would be a great catch( I know about football).
We need to keep building a quality league a little at a time.

It is a mistake to add in public universities like VCU, Umass and Memphis. These schools have an additional source of funding that private schools don't have, which over time gives them a competitive edge.

If I were adding schools, I would add Richmond and St.Louis. Split the conference into two divisions (East and West). Then play home and home within the division and one game against each team from the other division.

I wish BC would be granted a special provision to do bball only in the Beast. Outside of the Dudley era, BC bball has been wallowing in the All Carolina Cabal squalor...

No reason at all to add them.
I live up here.
Nobody cares about them, even if they're decent.

Have to add Dayton
Elite eight bound

And what happens when Dayton goes back to being Dayton for years to come? Do people really think that just b/c they've had this nice run they are suddenly going to become a basketball power and make deep runs in the tournament each year? I could be wrong but something tells me Dayton will be this year's George Mason of a few years ago, and not a new Gonzaga of the past 10 years.

I'm not sure anyone really thinks they are the new Gonzaga. For me personally, the top reason to add them would be because the fans are awesome.

And what BE team pray tell is going to do that? Dayton has a pretty good long history in basketball and is not George Mason. However, not sure if they would be a good addition or not but if we are going to expand they should be given very strong consideration.

Bama, when you say "what Big East team is going to do that" I assume you mean a theoretical new Big East team. Of the existing teams we have a few teams who are NCAA regulars, including some with recent Final Four appearances (Villanova, G'Town, Marquette, Xavier, have all been pretty consistent, & all but Xavier have been to a Final Four the last 10-12 years). I don't disagree when people say schools like St. Louis & Dayton have good support, etc, I just think that some are mistakenly assuming that they are going result in more NCAA bids for us as a league over the long haul.

Dayton has a great history and they draw and travel like crazy. They are a must...if we added them, Wichita State, and St. Louis when I wanted in 2012 we wouldn't be in this spot.
