Time to Get Aggresive and Creative

BE really took a hit this week. Reputation is everything. We get blasted by Robert Morris and all 4 tournament teams bow out before sweet 16. Let's not forget Buzz leaving Marquette and the classless pig that he is taking a shot at the BE on the way out.

The way I see conference alignment in the next 2-3 years for football schools, I think we need to get aggressive with expansion. Otherwise we will be stuck as the 7th or 8th best conference like we were this year. (Despite what many think/ hoped the A10, AAC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC and PAC 12 were all better than the BE). 8th best conference is too big of a drop off for my liking.

Call it what you want but I want 16 teams in this league by 2016. It may be audacious but give me 6 of the following and we will be a top 5 conference annually.

Davidson
Dayton
George Washington
Gonzaga
Richmond
Saint Joseph's
Saint Louis
St. Mary's
VCU
Wichita State

If we can get 6 of those 10 we'd be in very good shape. Right now the Butler's and McDermott-less Creighton's of the world just don't do it for me. Raid the A10 and grab Wichita State. Then maybe explore testing the limits of the Big East name by making it a coast-to-coast conference with Gonzaga and St Mary's. Realistically though if I had to chose 6 it'd be Dayton, George Washington, Saint Joe's, Saint Louis, VCU, and Wichita State.

Agree, with the six teams you chose.
Wichita state gets us the rivalry with Creighton
VCU is shaky but if Shaka gets locked up to a big extension I'd pull the trigger
GW, JOES, St Louis, and Dayton are all solid teams that are consistently good in the A10, and it's time to take them to the big east.

Overall if we do this it would feel like we'd be pulling a lot from the a10, but I feel with the great A10 teams blended with the C7 could make for a great conference. Plus you got nova/St Joes potentially playing twice a year. Dayton/Xavier a great rivalry. Plus the expansion would guarantee a sold out MSG every year in march with all these dedicated fan bases. This would be a great move to add six, well done.

LMFAO!!!
Were you behind the expansion that blew up the old Big East when we added Boise, San Diego, Tulane, Central Florida, Houston, etc?
Saint Mary's is in California and Wichita is in Kansas so do we need more big EAST jokes? I don't think so. Give me Dayton and VCU and we will hold our own.

Fwiw, ACC only has one team in the sweet 16 so I don't think it is any indication. We only have 10 teams and our "top" programs certainly disappointed. I agree though that we need to add at least 2-4 fervent basketball programs to add to our league to represent at a bigger scale.

First off nobody anywhere outside of it fan base even knows we played Robert Morris. I couldn't tell you who is still in the nit.

Secondly the ncaa committee sent going to remember what happened with big east teams this year and use it Against the league. Where it will hurt is recruiting but most of the big east has locked up solid classes. I think the league will be much stronger over be next few years. Gtown, Marquette, butler and Xavier were all much weaker than usual. All those teams should improve And the only team that really gets worse is creighton.

We all just need to take a deep breath and relax. The new Big East will be fine. We don't need some mega-expansion simply because a few teams lost early and Buzz Williams made a money-grab.

I got an idea. Why don't we get some overseas colleges to join the conference specifically from the far "East". Saigon Community college and Kim Jong Il school of arts would be my first 2 choices and they don't play football so we wouldn't have to worry about them bolting.

Agreed. Good luck to Buzz in Blacksburg, and welcome back Ben Howland. I don't want to see a repeat of the joke expansion from a few years ago. VCU and Dayton should be main targets. West Coast teams do not belong in the Big East conference. Aside from the obvious jokes, it makes travel and routing more difficult than it needs to be for student athletes.

Regretfully, I don't see anything happening. Our vaunted commissioner doesn't even have an office yet. Maybe she's wondering about what curtains will match the walls. At the same time, the college presidents who are really running the show think it's ok to dribble the ball with two hands. We're significantly insignificant. Our only hope is the Fox people don't wise up anytime soon.

I would wait a year and see what happens with the AAC. If that conference dissolves, then we would be in a position to grab Memphis and Temple. Neither of which will ever get an invite to a major BCS conference. Another team that will NEVER be invited to join a major conference is UMass, which frankly should have been added instead of Butler.
Dayton and Wichita St should also be targets, but only if the AAC remains intact long-term and Temple & Memphis are not options.

I mostly agree. It is important that the league be much stronger next year than it was this year. Not sure that is going to happen, though. St. John's should take a step up. Butler may as well. Creighton will have to take a step back without McDermott, but hopefully it won't be that far down since they are a very well-coached team. Providence will take a hit, and so will Nova, but Cooley and Wright are good enough coaches to keep them competitive. Georgetown is in trouble, I think they will decline further and that JT3 may get himself fired. DePaul and Seton Hall should be better than they were this year, but they won't sniff being ranked teams. I don't have any read on Xavier. Marquette will be a wild card. Even if Howland can hold Buzz's recruits, he has a very different system and there will be an adjustment year there before he has them playing the way he wants.

Overall I think that the bottom of the league will be better next year than it was this year, but that the top won't be as good. On paper I think SJU ought to be the best team in the league next year, and I don't see us rising much higher than the 12-15 range. My guess is we get the same 3 or 4 teams in the NCAAs next year that we did this year. Hopefully the league will perform better in the 2015 tournament.

If recruiting holds up I think the league could be very strong in 15/16, but that's a long way away and a lot can happen between now and then..

St. Mary's and Zaga are DOA.

Let's not forget we have an athletic budget that has to support all 17 (I believe is the correct number) sports.

That said, IF the Big East expands, at some point. the most likely candidates, I would think, are Dayton, SLU, and VCU.

I get why people think the Big East wasn't strong this year, but in reality we were ranked 4th in RPI. We weren't top heavy, but the conference was stronger top to bottom than most other conferences.

Uconn is going nowhere in football. They should find a notre dame type deal and play all sports but football in the BE. So we add the prodigal son uconn and one other school, maybe rhode island (they use to be good, how are they now?) Or vcu. Everyone mentions st louis but that team was built by majerus who passed away and these kids are now graduating. I am not sure what their future holds. Although I luv the idea of another poster to add two teams from the far east lol

G’town has a phenomenal recruiting class coming in for 2014, one of the best in the country. Four top 100 recruits. They are losing Starks, but Smith Rivera and Trawick are back and Josh Smith should be returning after academic suspension this season, which hurt them big time . They could be a force in 2014- and we should hope so, as a strong G’town is crucial for a strong BE.

what exactly has a strong conference and MSG done for us? Don't get me wrong I want both but in what way has that translated to on the court success for us the last 20 or so years. Weve been an abysmal program with the best arena and conference in the nation.

If only they hired Marillac. My post form May 2012:

If we split, I'd like to see a visionary put together a massive conference with an east and a west division. Gonzaga is a must get...no two ways about it. Dayton and Xavier are also no-brainers. Dayton always posts one of the highest attendance figures in the country. I'd also add Wichita State (great attendance, good history, NO football) and Creighton (awesome attendance, good history, always good teams).

I am hoping to prove that one wrong :) I'm not so much looking to go forward as I am digging myself out of a hole.
