Three Point Shooting Proficiency

I posted this the day before the opener. So far so good and happening a lot quicker then expected. Lets see what conference play brings.

Beast - great analysis. I disagree that his height is that much of an issue if he can turn into a true point guard. As a shooting guard or combo guard he would have almost no shot to even see the court in one game. There are a number of successful NBA point guards that are 6’ and 6’1 but you have to show the skills that you pointed out. Last year he shared ball handling duties with Lovett until he stopped playing as well as Simon. This year he will be the lead guard except for the few minutes a game he sits. I’m my opinion he is just starting out as a point guard.

I think he needs to improve on the following. Hopefully having scoring options like Herron and Figueroa will let him accomplish some of these.

Shot selection - not only does he need to improve his 3 point percentage, I believe he needs to improve his 2 point percentage as well. It’s ok if he scores less points in making this transition.
Assist/Turnover Ration - This has been less then 2:1 the last two seasons. Has to improve to better then 2:1. The closer to 3:1 the better.

Defense - has to continue to improve his defense without his steal numbers going down.

I hope he has a great season.

I can’t see the above happening in one season so I believe his best shot at playing in the NBA as a useful player is sticking it out two more seasons.

It’s more important to develop these skills then to worry about where you are drafted.
Ponds is shooting 62% from 2 this year
Defense has to get better and don't love him" taking games off" to pass(Will stop once BE starts) but he is great to watch and people on here should just enjoy the show because not going to see a talent like that around for awhile.
I don’t consider this last game as “taking off to pass”. He played great and did everything needed to be done. I remember one game this year where he was obviously just looking to pass like you said but I don’t see it as a problem going forward. And I think he has been playing good defense as of late and made huge defensive plays late in games that wee instrumental in wins vs vcu and gtech. Is the Dixon stuff hyperbole? because imo you are blowing it way out of proportion. I have been seeing him bust his ass. He might not be the best defender but the effort that you paint to be extraordinarily bad is just not the case.

Last game he played great. There were a couple of those 4 point games and one or two others. I think you know what I am talking about. He seems to say I am going to shoot or I am going to pass instead of letting game / opponent, situation dictate it. Had better balance last game I agree.

Now about the perimeter D. Not sure what goes on with Marillac's TV I think he is watching White Shadow reruns or something and thinks he is watching ST John's games. I think most would agree our perimeter D is really bad. Particularly closing out on shooters. So both you and Marillac have given Ponds absolute immunity from any and all criticism. Now Marillac defends Dixon who the sole reason he doesn't play more is his defense. So Ponds and Dixon are fine defenders, everyone on this site claims Marvin Clark is down low battling the ghost of Wilt Chamberlain and Marillac has moved Heron into his no criticism zone. So who exactly is not defending? You guys going to lay this all on the feet of both of your least favorite player Simon? Who BTW is the 3rd worst perimeter defender on the team. Figueroa? So it is all Simon and Figueroa?

Wasju I really don’t know what any of that stuff has to do with the question I asked. There’s a lot of things Marillax says I disagree with. You holding on to every comment I have made about Simon is getting ridiculous. I think Ponds is an underrated defender. He gets criticized for it often. Dixon I don’t think is a good defender but effort isn’t a question of mine. I think we let up a lot of perimeter looks because we over help due to lack of size. That and the fact we don’t close out well.

If not effort than really poor instincts. Ponds, Simon and DIxon all get caught looking around. This would def be more understanding if we were playing teams with bigs that were hurting us down low. We are not. Eventually we will and I am worried we will be caught in between going down to help and closing out on shooters but doing neither. We have not really played a team that we needed our guards to go help Clark and Heron or LJ down there.
Again the Dixon thing is deeper with me in that I have noticed he tries very hard not to make contact on screens. Again I do the just focus on one guy at times during games.

Four of St. John's top six scorers are all shooting 47.4% or better from the field and 36.7% or better from 3. What you lose on the glass when you go small, you make up for in efficiency. #SJUBB
