Three Point Shooting Proficiency

We have a very good shooting team overall and honestly it could even be better. Guys like Trimble could be hitting better. Ponds and Clark also are good enough to be higher. Offensively we have a balanced team. Our offense hasn’t even started clicking yet. Defense and offensive boarding I won’t even speak about...
I’m convinced Clark lower numbers is from playing out of position with Keita out and guarding guys he wouldn’t normally guard and wearing himself out. He isn’t an Anthony Glover. If I’m wrong at least I’ve convinced myself. I think his numbers pick up whenever Keita comes back
I agree and I think the same with Trimble also. Once Keita comes back hopefully everything will fall into place for these guys.
very interesting point on Trimble. The thing about him that I’ve noticed on him a lot is I really like the effort he puts in on D and when he’s is backed up down low he is physical with his body. He might not get big rebound numbers but emhe puts in a lot of work at times on bigger guys
When a player gets in a zone, the game slows down for him. He sees and feels opportunities, kind of like he's a 45 rpm record playing against 33 rpm. (younger guys ask your parents what a record is). You can feel the spaces you create taking the ball to the hoop jaggedly, you know precisely how much time you have to shoot down to milliseconds, you can even feel and anticipate where the ball is going on defense and play those lanes. Ponds does this perfectly when in a zone. Trimble is not remotely close to playing as well as he can, and needs to find a comfort level where the game starts to come to him. I suspect his upside is much higher than he is playing right now.
i forgot if this was on here or I was talking about it with the 114 crew but in regards to your Ponds mentioning agreed and for a guy his size and frame I’m not sure if I’ve even seen a kid with his rebound anticipation skills. It’s a please to watch how smooth he is when rebounding amongst other things he does obviously also

The shooting numbers are great and all, but the stat that stands out to me here is Ponds’ A/TO ratio at 3.41. That’s a great number for a guy with the ball in his hands so much.

He's always guarded 4s and 5s. I think he tried to do too much early to prove he was a SF offensively (he's not even close). There are also other options with Figgy, Heron, and Dixon that can shoot as well or close to as well as him. As the ball movement and familiarity improves he should get more and more looks.

I posted this the day before the opener. So far so good and happening a lot quicker then expected. Lets see what conference play brings.

Beast - great analysis. I disagree that his height is that much of an issue if he can turn into a true point guard. As a shooting guard or combo guard he would have almost no shot to even see the court in one game. There are a number of successful NBA point guards that are 6’ and 6’1 but you have to show the skills that you pointed out. Last year he shared ball handling duties with Lovett until he stopped playing as well as Simon. This year he will be the lead guard except for the few minutes a game he sits. I’m my opinion he is just starting out as a point guard.

I think he needs to improve on the following. Hopefully having scoring options like Herron and Figueroa will let him accomplish some of these.

Shot selection - not only does he need to improve his 3 point percentage, I believe he needs to improve his 2 point percentage as well. It’s ok if he scores less points in making this transition.
Assist/Turnover Ration - This has been less then 2:1 the last two seasons. Has to improve to better then 2:1. The closer to 3:1 the better.

Defense - has to continue to improve his defense without his steal numbers going down.

I hope he has a great season.

I can’t see the above happening in one season so I believe his best shot at playing in the NBA as a useful player is sticking it out two more seasons.

It’s more important to develop these skills then to worry about where you are drafted.

One other thing I noticed. I tend to watch the game in isolation at times. I miss the big picture even when right in front of me, but I'm attracted to the roles guys are playing on the floor. I'm not sure if by design or not, but often our defenders spread the floor and Ponds cheats a little in the paint, making him a prime rebounder for us vs. a guard, which is a big advantage considering how he is great at getting position, elevates well and quickly, has superior strength for his size, and incredible nose for the ball. Of course defenders guard a player, except when we play a zone, but it's really interesting to see Ponds as our sole guy underneath, where believe it or not, we have a big advantage when that happens.

Basketball is all about creating favorable matchups on the floor, and Ponds in a position to rebound is one of those.
A few of takeaways
1. I really wish people would stop that Clark playing out of position nonsense. Outside of Rutgers game we really have not played a Big with size and any skill. On offense he basically plays small forward and game has not changed from last year. He started off badly but shooting better now because he has a nice touch. By end of year his % will be around what it was last year I bet.

2. I really enjoy watching Earlington shoot threes. He has great exit velocity on his misses. Hope he gets to shoot more as it means we are winning big. In fact a good barometer of how our season has gone will be the number of Earlington three point attempts at end of season.

3. Dixon is a good spot up shooter. Too bad he doesn't pay attention / try on D or he would get more attempts and minutes. Plus more PT for him would mean less for Trimble. If Dixon defends, once Keita comes back Trimble would / should be odd man out. Sadly bet this wont happen.

4. Listen Trimble only plays because Dixon doesn't defend. He plays hard on defense. HOWEVER. He is aware that he you know he is allowed to shoot inside the line every now again, right? Like he is not wearing that Running Man collar where his head will explode if he crosses the three point line, right?
Aside from the last 2 games especially Wagner it's not about covering a having to cover a skilled big man. It could be anyone with big size and that person doesn't even have to score. The more physical exertion Clark spends on that person even if they suck that still can wear you down yourself and that the first place for that to show up in my opinion would be shooting

Those numbers are good enough for 26th in the country (one behind Providence) and a 6ppt increase from 2017. Creighton is #2 in the country at a ridiculous 44.8%.

Mike, we have no one on the team capable of guarding a skilled big man. So far our offense, not our defense, has been our strength. We still don't close out on shooters and Trimble guarding 6'8 bigs or bigger is not going to cut it once BE play begins. Clark is strictly an outside player who occasionally drives but I don't see any great hops on either offense or defense. Another I don't see is anything resembling offensive rebounding, especially from Clark. We are ranked 320th in the country in offensive rebounding percentage which is pitiful. As many have pointed out we rarely have any player still attacking the basket once the ball leaves the hands of a SJ player taking a 3 point shot. That will bit us on the ass once BE games begin.

You really stick to your themes regardless of whatever evidence contradicts it.

Dixon is all out effort all the the time yet you continue to knock his effort. How many times does be have to hit the floor before you stop? His understanding of defensive concepts is not where it needs to be. Ponds shoved almost off his feet a few games ago to get to the right man. It has nothing to do with effort.

And Marvin is not a SF on offense...he just shoots. Just like Pitsnoogle or the countless big men that can hit threes at high clips. He doesn't penetrate, create, skip pass, etc. He shoots set shots. That doesn't make him a SG or a SF anymore than it did to Pitsnoogle.

How the '4-point line' and other court markings are changing the NBA

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...just-beginning-nba-latest-trend?platform=amp&
This is a great article and should be required reading for this board. It's a great synopsis of how the game is changing. The NBA style of play with 5 out offense and shooting many 3s has more than made it's way to the college game. Pretty obvious to see where Mullin got his system.

But for all those who complain that we don't run a system, this is the new style of the game, hate it or love it, the game has evolved.

Ponds is shooting 62% from 2 this year

Defense has to get better and don't love him" taking games off" to pass(Will stop once BE starts) but he is great to watch and people on here should just enjoy the show because not going to see a talent like that around for awhile.

For the 19 minutes Dixon is on the floor just watch him. No matter what the score is in 1st half we will win this game. So just watch Dixon on D. Never knows where his guy is. Whoever he is guarding or his area in a zone will get wide open looks. Then watch after someone will hit a three Mullin takes him out and they talk to him before he sits down.
Just watch him, don't talk about Lobster Rolls or Micro beers or Game of Thrones or whatever you are doing during games Mike and then tell me if you have same opinion.
