The worst part of being a STJ fan...

I am an alum and I desperately wish that I could be like the rest of my alumni friends who don't give a crap about the team unless they are winning.

I'm trying every day to take my heart our of this.

Honestly, the only reason I watch the games at this point is to see Rysheed's development.

But this is a worse feeling than back in 1994 when we brought in Felipe, Zendon and Tarik. It is much worse.

Reason being, we didn't have a pompous loudmouth coach who loved being on camera and talking up a bunch of nonsense. The expectations back then were much higher because we had the best player in the nation AND Felipe and Zandon were local kids so there was that attachment to them.

But this "Lavin regime" is magnified because he is trying to Sell you a Lamborghini where we can all see that it is a lemon.

Never again should we hire a coach that does not have NY roots.

Lavin's cool, hands-off approach can work in Hollywood but it won't fly over here. He doesn't understand the NY attitude, hustle and desperation. NYers are hard to impress. No one is going to stop because you step into a room and that's the part that Mr. Soho doesn't get. Save the hair gel. We need someone who wants to get his fingernails dirty.

So I hope to post much less and less as we get closer to Febru...err...I mean March. And I will start to purposely not tune in to more and more games since the Leader of the team said don't bother because you won't see the best product until the last month of the season.

Yeah, "it's fluid".

As an alum, long time supporter & season ticket holder, I sadly concur.

I talked up about this team before this season started.
Then everyone I know told me: "oh but every year we always hear it`s this year, and what always happens?"
This year I responded with : "no this is the year that we are back. We are not young this year, with lots of juniors, we are getting a 25 year old man that is a NBA prospect (all the experts said so), we`re getting a 5star pg recruit. Trust we are gonna be top3 in the B.E.
If not this year then never.
So right now it feels like a few slaps to the face while being laughed at while everyone says to me WELL WTF HAPPENED?
Only thing I could do is turn my face away and walk away.

I`m an idiot for saying to myself that this has just has to be the year. Well I guess it isn`t the year huh.

In each game i`d yell and go nuts because i`m so intense during sju games but I was calm in the last 5minutes just shaking my head which is telling me that maybe i`m starting not to care.
Then I read Lavins quote saying: "Our goal is to win in March.

So if Lavin doesn`t care about winning now, then why wtf am I caring so much that I get so intense that I start getting pain.
It`s not worth putting my heart into these games anymore.

I`ll still put the games on every now and then and read these posts and maybe post myself every now and then but not like how i am now.

Could I hope for a new coach next year that wants to win in every month and not just in march or yeah I know, I`d most likely be dreaming. What if the donaters all went into SJU at the same time and showed unity and demand that a coaching change happen and get someone who cares to win EVERY DAMN MONTH AND NOT JUST NONE.

They wouldn`t tell the donaters no right? Isn`t repoli a die hard fan and loves sju so I bet this pains him.
Guess I`m dreaming but I could dream right?

You twisted lavins quote. He said he wants this team playing its best by march, so they can win the big east tournament.

I think he said that because he is starting to realize his chance of an at large bid is slipping away.

Tuesday is a huge game, get us our fist coveted conference win, and get some of you to back off the ledge.

I'm as pissed as the rest of you, but this season is far from lost.

I couldn't agree more. As Jimmy V said, "Never give up!".

no hope believes there is no worse part about being a fan of our team. Good times or bad times we still make time to watch them and root for them. We still follow them through the bad times hoping for the good times and we always hope they will win even games when we say they will lose. There is a reson we are fans we love our teams for what ever reason and they are a source of pride and enjoyment even when they lose or are bad. We wear it like a badge of pride. Lets go SJU

This year's ritual:

-DVR game.

-Forget about game.

-See game is on DVR list. Huzzah!

-Log onto redmen.com to see if game is worth watching.

-Often, delete game without watching.

-Tee up latest "Community" episode.

I think it was Winston Churchill who said something like "Never, ever, ever, ever, ever give up"

Worst part? Realizing we may never be good again. The business of college basketball may have passed us by. That and constantly hearing about 1985. It was 30 years ago for God's sake.

If Xavier, Nova, Gonzaga & Marquette most years can be relevant, in the right hands so can SJU. Most fans despite posts to contrary, don't think we will ever be on Duke, Kansas, Kentucky level. Most of us aspire to be a solid, competitive team .

Many, many years of poor administrative leadership & decision making have hurt us. Talented, goal driven folks in AD, President & Coach's positions are required to achieve Basketball success. Accountability has to be part of the equation. Unfortunately we remain rudderless with Presidential vacancy and extreme mediocrity at AD level.

Although I have criticized Lavin's coaching ability, I know he deserves to complete this season and receive an evaluation. The problem is there is no one in positions of leadership capable of doing that at this juncture. Hopefully a strong President is hired and system of review and accountability instituted.

Great post.
I don't know why people make the leap from "Lavin's not doing a good job" to replying "You can't expect us to be Duke, Kansas, Kentucky".
No sh*t. As Paultzman said I don't know of any SJU fans that expect to be an elite program.
But making the tournament on a semi-regular basis, with the opportunity to make a run every now and then isn't asking too much.

lol unfortunately I can be counted among those SJU fans with unrealistic expectations. I may be alone in this but I also think Lavin is the guy to turn us around. When a program is run into the ground like we were, success rarely does happen quickly. I was expecting this year but, the verdict is still out... He's bringing the kids in. We sent one to the NBA, with hopefully more to come. A few more top classes, a couple upsets and NCAA appearances and we will be leaps and bounds ahead of the past decade. The number of wins is only one of many barometers to measure a program. (some may say its the only one that matters, but I dont) I like the fact that with this team (Although they are frustrating) We can go into anygame with a legitamate shot at winning. I dont think I could have said that many times over the past decade.

As a proud Alum: I get pissed off when we lose, elated when we win. I talk trash to rival grad's about our glory days. I have more hope for the future now with Lavin then I did with roberts.

This is why I never get overly excited when we nail some top recruits. I get excited, but always have a wait and see approach. Some guys go crazy when a recruit scores 25 points in the first intrasquad game and rattles the rim a few times. Still others get excited when a top guy has a very good game against D3 competition. I begin to form an opinion in the pre-conference season, and don't complete it until we are well into conference. There were enough signs in the pre-season to worry about this team because they were struggling against some pretty mediocre to bad competition, but am confident they are capable of righting the ship. Whether they do or not is anyone's guess.

Having more hope for the future relative to what you had w Roberts is not saying much.
