The Transfer Portal (in general)

Big 6'9 rebounding machine becomes available that would be great going after in transfer portal, as it would immediately add a piece that we are missing. Otherwise prefer going the high school route via Macon's good connections to local programs. That route creates so much sustainable stability, something that we have not had here for decades.

So often these Div. 1 transfers prove to be other program's divas. Thing I like about our current mix seems to be lack of egos. That is a big reflection of the head coach. So hope it continues, most refreshing change on the corner of Union & Utopia.

By my count, SJU does not currently have any available scholarships?  CMA appears to be developing a solid roster of committed athletes.  As in previous years, SJU is not entering March with three open scholarships while it is mulling over a bunch of 2* recruits.

Immediate gratification from "trading up" sounds good, but it can damage the program long term.  When a kid leaves a program, it reflects poorly on the entire staff, as it appears the staff did not understand what the kid could bring to the team or couldn't develope the kid properly.  The people that steered the kid to the first school will be unlikely to steer the next kid to that program.

Excellent post Steve. We live in a society where immediate gratification is required and is highly sought after. It did not work at all with our last staff though it did look good on paper.
As you correctly pointed out we find ourselves in completely uncharted waters compared to the prior two staffs. When spring came each season we had a bunch of available ships and were searching high and low for available bodies who had height and could dribble.
CMA immediately filled out the barren roster year one bringing in Champagnie and Rutherford. Both exceeded expectations. I am in my 39 th year of being a fan and I can't remember a recruit ever exceeding expectations close to the level of Champagnie. At the end of last season the players that left did so because either they refused to buy into his disciplined system of 105% effort and schoolwork ( Steere ) or were over the heir heads talent wise ( Speers). No one had a problem with same.
The four players he brought in last fall have all contributed this season to our success and improvement. Posh has greatly exceeded expectations, while Wusu has done the same. Perhaps if we would not be so deep at the 2 and 3 and Wusu obtained another 10 minutes of pt a game we would even speak more highly of him. Who knows, but I look at him somewhat like I did at Champagnie last season and keep saying to myself what the hell did the staff see to take a flyer on this kid and get the results they are obtaining ? Whatever it was I am thrilled they did.
as for Moore and Cole both have had up and down seasons in their first year in Div 1 but I am thrilled they are at SJU. They both have contributed greatly to this teams success and I look forward to Moore putting on 10 pounds of muscle and Cole improving his foot speed and handle in the off season. If they can each do that they will contribute even more next season and make us that much better of a team.
Sorry for the long winded post but I agree with you 110% and was just trying to provide examples of why I agree with you. CMA is the coach we have been searching for for ages and I look forward to this new era of SJU ball where we continue to build from the ground up as opposed to constant lateral movement.

No scholarships unless someone other than Dunn / Toro decide not to come back. If Dunn decides to use extra year maybe that would force someone’s hand.

I don't see McGriff coming back.     I think you could probably add Toro to that list too.  He's 5 th year now and not playing .  Hard to tell about Dunn. He's in his 5 th year or more of College Ball  now , with his 2 transfers .  We truly need a shooting guard to complement Posh .  Wusu is already good but , I wouldn't call him a Shooting Guard .

Does the free transfer work with the extra year everyone gets? For instance, if French or Alvarado wanted to play a fifth year, but do it at a hypothetical New York school, could they do it?

I know this season is technically not over.  But I hope the staff bookmarks this page.

Not that I want to support Jeff Goodman in any way.  But this off season is going to be WILD.  The free transfer rule will happen and its going to be the wild west out there.  It's inevitable that a couple of our guys to leave as well.  I just hope they are minor pieces.  We don't have a lot of needs (hello big man) provided all the important players return and we add the 3 incoming frosh.  I don't envy the staff at all.  It's hard enough to put the 13 chess pieces together and ensure all the kids sing kumbaya.  It's going to be even crazier now.  You might get a transfer but then a current player gets spooked and wants to use his free transfer.

Bottom line is next year's team should be a desirable location for a transfer.  COY, FOY, DPOY, leading scorer in the BE.  Lot of positive pieces to join.

I have no reason to doubt we are as clean as we seem to think . . . but I wouldn't mind being slightly dirtier. I can already name a handful of big men with New York ties and decent stats who I wouldn't mind bringing in, and that's even before I start doing research. I could probably come up with 100 guys who might be convinced to come home.

I want a 10 page full report on my desk first thing in the morning!

Love to have Storm Murphy.  Actually would take both of them, Wofford's entire backcourt, even if SJU doesn't need both but Murphy would be a perfect sniper next to Posh next year.

If a player wants to return can the scholarship be pulled because the coach wants to add a different player?  Or does the staff just tell the kid you can stay, but you won't see the court?

They can pull the scholarship every year but it’s usually not as cutthroat as that.

Usually the player has a 1 on 1 talk with the coach at the end of the season.  but usually they will give an indicator whether for example they will have alot of playing time for them.  From there the player will go back to their family and make a decision. Kids transfer for a lot of reasons but playing time is a huge factor.

Greg Gannt leaving PC.  Believe he was rated #60 in his class.

The flip side to getting high level recruits is they have been the star for a long time already.  And when they see adversity more often than not they run first chance they get.
