The Official 2014 Big East Tournament Thread

The Providence vs. Creighton game was a great game to watch and representative of the excitement which a Big East Championship game should have.

Providence and Creighton may be the most talented teams in the conference and Providence is seemingly the best coached by Ed Cooley whose players dive on every lose ball.

Cooley took over a broken Providence College mens basketball program coming off of a losing 15 and 17 record and in just 3 years he has rebuilt and energized the Providence Friar program.

Congrats to the Friars. Very well deserved victory. They only play 6 or 7 guys, yet they dive for loose balls and hit the boards with reckless abandon. The other keys? Solid defense and they hit their free throws (best in the country).
Give me players like Fortune and Betts any day.

Congratulations to Providence, who held up the honor of the legacy Big East schools by beating Creighton in the Big East tournament last night.

While my stomach still churns over the recurring thought that "It shoulda been us", Providence has restored their program to respectability, and came through when it mattered. Creighton did really well this year, and has a great and loyal fan base, but I am kind of happy that they didn't come to the Big East and run through our league and tourney as if it were swiss cheese in their initial year in the league. They found out last not it's not so easy to win here, not against St. John's in the regular season, and not against Providence last night. Providence, thanks to Seton Hall, didn't quite have to run the gauntlet, but perhaps in mob fashion (and the city of Providence has its own history there) they did what they had to do, and got the job done when it counted. PC has a great and loyal fan base - their enrollment is bolstered by NYC kids, many from Queens and Long Island especially. They are literally just a short drive and ferry trip across the LI sound to Orient Point. Good luck to them. I'd much rather be rooting for St. John's in the big dance, but will now have a rooting interest in Providence, Nova, and Creighton in the NCAA's.

The famous Marlon Brando lines from "On the Waterfront" are ringing in my ears:

"You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am"

It shoulda been us.

It shoulda been us.

Providence is a better team than StJohns, plain and simple as witnessed by the facts that it won the Big East Conference Championship and will play in the NCAA Tournament this coming week.

A team is what their record is. StJohns was the 5th best team in the Big East Conference this season. Let's hope for improvement next season.

I woke up this morning with the epiphany that we went 2-7 this season combined against Nova, Creighton, Xavier, and Providence. Clearly we weren't good enough and should not have gone to the dance. Having said all that, we came within one basket short in a frenetic run of getting a bid we probably didn't deserve

woulda coulda shoulda.
Won't even bother watching the selection show.
Stole the Marquette and SH games and still couldn't qualify.
In the unlikely event the entire team returns, still don't see SJU in the top 5 of the BE next season.
He'll still tinker with Hooper until February and tell us that Felix has been so dominant in practice that he'll have to start him.
Costco will add another department to their store, and Lavin will see this as a sign to increase Pointer's minutes.
Sampson will break the school record for 3 pointers attempted, followed closely Phil Greene going into record books for going an entire season without a turnover.
This despite shooting 13.6% while have at least one foot on the 3 point line. (a stat that had previously never been kept.)
I'm just one happy *#%(@% ray of sunshine this morning.

well at least I know there is someone angrier than me still. :)

You just convinced me to go to the gym now and maybe hitting the speed bag reduces my anger a little

Sorry to say it, but even though we have more raw talent, both of these are better TEAMS than st johns.

Didn't we beat them both once each during the season?

Like I said, we have raw talent, and the talent to compete with any team on any given night. However, that raw talent came up short when it counted, as evidenced by our 2-7 record against the top 4 teams in the BE.

I think we have to realize that Providence is a very good team. We didn't get beat by a crappy team on Thursday. They beat an excellent Creighton team as they showed the same energy and determination that they displayed on Thursday.

What I find frustrating is where they were just a few years ago. Why are so many programs able to rebuild so quickly as we continue to stumble each step we take forward?

Would Cooley have done the same job here at SJU or are there other factors with our program/school that go beyond the coach?

Watching Providence win last night brought back such fond memories of Max Hooper.

Truth be told we played very well after the 0-5 start. It was remarkable that we were in the hunt till the last game. But ,I also was concerned that it took so long for Lavin to find a lineup, and his stupid substitution patterns early on. Sad thing is that's what cost us an NCAA tourney appearance. Lets hope Lavin figures things out earlier next year and we have a BE calibre Center.

This is the year we win the Big East Tournament, our last two conference tournament championships were 14 years apart.

1986, 2000, and 2014
there is a term I use with my jewish clients ( even though I'm not jewish but hey the last name Maher could be taken as jewish and I know yiddish anyway). " Alivay "

On the bright side, at least we don't have until 2028 for our next conference tournament championship. Then again..................
