The off topic thread

To be fair if he’d have gone to Seton Hall he might not have made the rookie forum
But his mother went to a Vincentian school.....DePaul.😉
He is the most "multicultural" pope in history.

Pope Leo's paternal grandparents were Jean Lanti Prevost, an Italian man of French and Italian descent from Settimo Rottaro, near Turin, emigrated in the United States during the Italian diaspora, and Suzanne Fontaine, a Frenchwoman from Le Havre. His maternal grandparents were the Hispaniola-born mixed-race Joseph Martínez, who had Spanish blood and the New Orleans-born mixed-race Louise Baquié.
He has a very rich ethnic background that includes Italian, French, Spanish and mixed race Creole from Louisiana.

Nah, I moved my 401K to mostly a Stable Value Fund right before that so I actually had a gain that year. but to stay on topic, it is still amazing that they screwed this up.
My rule of thumb is not to look at your age in terms of when to move retirement assets but when you exlect to draw on those funds. If that age is 60, and you need those funds to live off, then begin to move assets out of equities towards fixed rate of return.
What is difficult for retirees is trying to live off of interest when rates plummet. My advisors say that retirement funds are the last you should tap, since they grow tax deferred, in essence you are getting a return on money that would otherwise go to the government in taxes.

In terms of potential donations to sju, you can donate appreciated assets like stocks or mutual funds to the school, take the full value of the donation as a tax deduction and not have to pay taxes on the gain.

So if you invested $2,000 in Apple a dozen years ago, it could be worth 25k which when sold the gain would be taxable. Donating part or all of that investment allows you to take a deduction for that full amount donated, without ever having to pay the tax on the gain.

Another way to make a dination won't cost you a cent in your lifetime and that's through estate planning. If you are living say in a mortgage free home, your estate has an asset that may be worth $1 million or more. Pledging to donate part of your estate in a will would improve your priority points without impacting you in your lifetime.

I believe even the highest ranking priests and Deans below Shanley buy their own tickets. I'd have to imagine that the priests at least get a discount. I wouldn't be shocked to learn a Dean took it out of department budgets but that's never been intimated. I can assure you though, those folks gets prime seats with little priority points.
In the 1990's the school started taking the costs of our tickets out of our budget lines. I was given my 4 comps near the bench for my wife and kids, but everything else including tickets for my team doctors were charged to my sports medicine budget. They finally ended this practice in the mid 2000's when they realized other departments were transferring funds from one act to another to cover additional game tickets.
At least SJU did not institute the practice of taxing the value of my comp family tickets and the sports medicine donor dealer car we used to transport athletes to medical facilities as was done at other colleges!

I hear you but it is kind of a tough one because last years team had multiple stars and RJ, despite winning POY, was my least favorite.

I wasn't a fan of Kadary in the beginning of the season and by mid February he was one of my favorite Johnnies ever. Zuby is Zuby. Scott is one of my all time favorite glue guys.

I will always appreciate RJ and he gave us some great memories but I just didn't love his game. Relied way too much on his athleticism IMO

It also kinda sucks, but sometimes your final memory with someone can leave the biggest impression. I was in the building for the Arkansas game, RJ wasn't the only one who played poorly that day, but he was the only one who looked like he didn't care.
Zuby just loves RJ. That's not talked about enough in my book. To me, it counts for a real lot.

RJ handled the aftermath of his last game like a true professional. A lot of stuff was being implied. I thought it was an awful lot of blame for a 22-year-old to shoulder. If he reacted the way most people would have it could have been an ugly amount of PR for our program. In my view this was an excellent 24/25-win team without him. He made it one of this best Johnny teams of the past 50 seasons.

My last post on this thread I promise. The Shamorie ( I was one who said he made a mistake ) heck I said Jakaar made mistake and others. This was Pre Nil. We will have plenty of kids going to try and go early now with Rick. RJ was is a monstrous talent. Is he top 60 or whatever talent ? Who cares. He is 2 million or more dollar talent

Kids earlier Omar Shamorie arguable made mistakes because of the thought if they stayed in school longer their draft status would improve so stay in school. Moose made the excellent argument that Cook had a great career after

So if some make the argument that Shamorie should have stayed in school and not left college then don't try and say RJ made a mistake to try and go pro then go back to college and make a shiteton of money

I believe the start of the RJ vs Ponds discussion is that someone thought that RJ would be remembered with Mullin and Berry and my comment was that I thought he would be remembered more in the nature of Shamorie Ponds. It wasn't about "made a mistake" or "should have stayed in college," it was just about their prospective place in SJU history.

Definitely room for different opinions but the more I consider it the more I think RJ is very much a current version of Ponds. And FWIW I liked Ponds a lot, he just did not have the advantages around him that RJ did.

Simply put, RJ and Zuby will (likely) be remembered very differently. Like different tiers different.

RJ and Kadary may be more neck and neck.

My reference to Shamorie had zero to do with his decision to stay in school.

Did RJ lead us to the BET and regular season championship? Yes, best player on a talented ensemble cast.

Could he lead us to a national championship? Not so sure.

Is he an nba player? Unsure but i dont thonk at this point.

Is he worth $4 million per year to play college ball? If he were, he'd be coming back here.

My take: RJ should have decided early on whether he should go into the portal or go nba draft. If he decided he would be back for a senior year, there would be more buyers with money in their budget. He may return to college with far less than he would have if he committed to a 4th year earlier.

How much is a player worth? Whatever someone is willing to pay him.
