The off topic thread

There were 4 great point guards in that class. Kenny Hutchinson was considered #1. He won a city and state championship in 1982 playing with Gary Springer, Richie Adams, and Walter Berry. He went to the University of Arkansas but personal problems derailed his career. He later went back to college and received his degree from CCNY. He is currently living in Mew York City.
If memory serves me correctly, Looie was after all 4 and the first one to commit he would stop recruiting the others and Mark committed first

I think the 3 point guards that year were Mark, Kenny the Jet and Pearl. Wow!!!!!
If I remember correctly, Coach Looie told the 3 that the first one who commits, gets the scholarship. Mark quickly committed.
I believe we would have taken Pearl no matter what, and made it work.
I believe Pearl’s girlfriend went to STJs at the time, thus giving us a chance.
I don’t remember how long we stayed alive in the Pearl recruitment.
I imagine that the Pre NIL package that Syracuse offered was too much to resist.
We were in it to the end. He made his announcement on TV or it was filmed and shown afterwards.
He told announcer it was between us and Syracuse. After he announced Syracuse the announcer said carrier dome
will be called the Pearl Dome. He was very humble and laughed and said I don’t know about that. I think the footage
is on the Big East 30 for 30

They did not have player ratings array back then like now. Mark, Kenny Smith and Pearl were all highly recruited in same year obviously. I believe the three also stayed at Loughlin, Molloy and Boys High, which would not be the case today with so many good players going prep school route.

Of the three, Pearl and Kenny were perceived as the top two of the group and touted to be great pros. Mark surprised in that regard eclipsing both professionally imo.

Sorry for being off topic.
Played against Mark and Kenny for 4 years in HS, unbelievable!. Go back with Smith through CYO days.

I think in the typical list, he is.

NBA hasn't updated their official list since their 50th anniversary list in 1996, obviously a bit early to include Mullin and Jackson. But I doubt either would be on the list today. Probably more in the 51-100 range They might have made it around the time of their respective retirements but wouldn't have been high enough not to be moved out by the large number of greats who have played in the last 30 years. There are plenty of other lists so I'm sure others have included them.

Edit: Acutally they came out with a 75 best list for the 75th anniversary in 2021. 76 players due to a tie in voting. No Mullin or Jackson.

Caveat I should add with the 75th list is they didn't drop off anyone, so it was really just adding 25 guys. Mullin is definitely on the lower end of this tier somewhere. Hard to say who he would bump regardless.

Mullin vs. Reggie Miller is an interesting side by side: https://www.landofbasketball.com/player_comparison/reggie_miller_vs_chris_mullin.htm

Sorry for being off topic but I think its fair to say portal is done. lol

I really appreciate the leeway that the mods give during the offseason.

Personally, I’m a Penn State football diehard and a St John’s fan/masochist (since birth). Right now all the “gurus” have Penn State as the number one preseason pick, and SJU as a locked in final four contender. I honestly don’t know how to deal with this level of quality, and sometimes my posts probably reflect this confusion!!!
Haven't seen even one guru with Penn St number one let alone all of them. Have seen mostly Texas with Oregon usually second. Have seen Penn St in the 3 or 4 spot.

They didn't just add 25(26) guys, they still had a voting process just didn't find enough new guys to bump anyone from the old list.

What I just found out from looking at this and find kind of amazing is that Mullin averaged .8 or more blocks for 5 straight seasons.

Thats a good debate and a classic better peak vs longer career example. Mullin definitely the better player at his best

Man I miss that 2025 portal thread with the runaway 40 off topic posts and not 1 from mjmaherjr.

Never felt such a sense of loss 😀

The sincere hope of most posters is that this thread is where all the garbage and insanity is posted. It is possible that many off topic posts will simply appear here by magic:)

Current ESPN post spring 25 has PSU no 1. As does Yahoo (klatt).

And to ohiofan’s categories, I’m thinking this falls under insanity. Because no way does a James Franklin coached team beat Ohio State.
