To be fair, players today are trying to maximize their career length and stay healthy for the playoffs as well.
I don’t love the idea of load management at all, but how many seasons did Michael Jordan play?
He played about 13 and a half and retired twice in during his run. He says it numerous times in the doc how exhausted he was physically and mentally before he retired the first time. I’m sure he will get into it when he retires after the 98 season too.
We have simply learned more in modern day about athletes and how to maximize their time on the court by taking better care of them.
LeBron is gonna play 20+ years in the NBA with only one major injury that cost him half of a season. He has spent millions of dollars on his body throughout his career and it has worked. The world is changing, and teams are learning how to ensure that their greatest assets, their stars, can stay in great shape for longer periods of time.
The whole “integrity of the game” thing is all well and good, but at the end of the day these franchises are a business and they want their stars to be out there when it matters. MJ retired twice when he was the best player in the world due to exhaustion. The whole “no days off” thing is honorable and makes for a great quote but you gotta wonder how many more rings he could’ve gotten if he had modern technology and awareness we have today on players health. Sitting a couple times during his career when the Bulls were obviously going to go far no matter what they did in the regular season, could’ve prolonged his reign over the nba

Elite Athlete, great player, celebrity, philanthropic etc..but something about him just makes it hard for me to be a fan of his. He's like the cleaner version of A-Rod. He's just too textbook perfect in what he does, says etc that I just find irritating and forced.

It’s probably because he grew up in a time where athletes were more than just guys playing a game, they needed to be front and center and have a personality, and the camera was always on. Also bear in mind that he grew up a Yankees/Derek Jeter fan, so who better to emulate in that capacity?
