Well, we all have our own ideas regarding the quality of Chris Mullin's coaching acumen, but I remain on the record in insisting that he is basically incompetent. A great player, probably the best in our school's history....but a knowledgeable coach he is not! This final game against Arizona State was just more tom foolery, with Mullin insisting to his detriment, in putting Kieta, Trimble, and Simon on the floor at the same time...far too soon. Where in hells bells were you supposed to get your scoring from? He had Figueroa off the floor for no apparent reason at times. He had an entire season to assess his talent and couldn't even decide who he wanted to play. He had a rotating "dog house" that obviously pissed players off. No wonder he can't keep them on his roster. He hasn't recruited a decent big man since he's been here. Owens, who hardly played at Tennessee, ended up being a nice surprise. But he couldn't keep him here either. His teams are ridiculously sloppy. If someone wasn't stepping out of bounds, then they were fouling a three point shooter. There's no discipline. His out of bounds plays suck. He tolerated Ponds, hardly a long range shooter, chucking em' up from 6 ft. behind the 3 point line (yea, he made two early in the Arizona State game, but they were not good shots). They ran sloppy fast breaks all season. Arizona St. only took 4 first half threes.....you think there might have been a reason? A knowledgeable coach might have packed a zone. We fell flat on our face just as soon as opposition defenses started zoning high and our three point percentages went into the toilet. And what has happened to Heron and Clark. Have you ever seen such unpredictable play? They totally sucked us out of that huge final game. And what was Simon doing taking "big shots" at crunch time? Don't you know your own liabilities? I'd also like to know why referees seem to have a hard on for St. John's. The Big East season started with us being jobbed, and it ended the same way. The damn game felt like a road encounter. But seriously, Chris Mullin had some decent talent out there this year, finished the year in a horrendous fizzle, and for my money, he didn't do the job!

My disappointment of this year was #1 the end of year collapse #2 Bronx Pale Ales at MSG going up over 10% in price

That's about 100 bucks more a game for you. Wow.

He’s been awful. Our incremental improvement over the last 5 years is solely thanks to the improved talent Matt brought in. Heck, I’m not sure if you cut Mullin loose, and just made Matt the head coach for the next 2 years, we’d be any worse. He’s not bringing much to the table for us because recruits aren’t buying in to our head coach. I actually think Matt’s job recruiting has been great, but hampered most by our lack of a real head coach. Matt will kill under Hoiberg because he can really coach and recruit as well. Ask anybody in college basketball about Mullin’s tenure here. The phrase I hear most often is “dumpster fire”...

I havent posted much since Mullin was hired. I didnt think he was the right choice even as an experiment. I have had the same observations as Doc did! I have no idea why Clark was shooting so many 3s, and why we didnt press more early in games. I am hopeful that Cragg will follow in the tradition of winning tradition. I am all in favor for a Pitino hire and am more than willing to put my money where my mouth is! We need a quick fix and Pitino needs an image rehab. Perfect match! You want Precious, Pitino would land Precious! I have no idea why so many on here do not want to hear Pitino, we are a catholic school and I learned about forgiveness at SJU! We are getting older and i dont want to pass to the big campus in the sky with another rebuild! The school has the money and i would with other alumni match the school for Pitino, I will not support Oates who may end up being a good coach but he has never built a winner on his own yet! Pitino has at multiple stops!

The only Pitino you will get is Junior!
Pitino senior as a special assistant to Junior may quench your thirst.
My sense is that a huge change is coming but not what you suggest.

It seems like there isn't a poster left who supports Mullin as coach. Even Lavin had more supporters at the end. After watching a lot of March Madness, and seeing so many well coached but undersized teams hanging in against superior size or superior talent or both, it's hard to argue with what Doc Butler said. While Mullin forgot more about basketball than any of us will ever know, he also seems out of touch with the college game today. Out of touch with recruiting and with the need to provide structure on the court. Things may have been different with a staff of experienced assistants, but he chose to have the company of friends on the sideline instead.

Pitino sr wants to coach again. The penance with the Pope helped him in Europe. I dont think a major power school would hire him now unless Self or Miller goes down with the FBI investigation. I think we could get Rick for 4 or 5 years, have him bring in Hatten and other former olayers to build a culture, and a coaching tree! Mullin has 0 former players to help build a coaching tree! See Duke and Cragg and Duke having former players always on staff!!

This is the Board of 'senses' and 'tea leaves' & 'we shall see'!
Lol.
"...a huge change is coming..." (not Pitino Sr.) 'this' year or next year??
& P.S., lemme add this is also the Board of 'many' Pale Ales...!
Lol.

I said I would judge our current staff based off of what happened during this the 4th year. I've come to accept the fact that the current staff is not going to lift the program to the next level. A level where year in and out we have the possibility of dancing. If every player that could come back does come back next year, I think that they would have enough talent to make a run at the dance. However, unfortunately I think it would need a different staff to get them there. No matter what, I will continue to support whatever group is on the floor and on staff. I feel that with Cragg we eventually will have the right coach and assistants to get us to the level we haven't seen since the days of Louie C. I've finally reached the acceptance stage of the 5 stages of grief. I'm especially excited about next season because I'll be able to go to games again after living on the other side of the country the last decade plus. I look forward to bringing my 13 year old son to his first games. It's going to be fun for me even if it will be a frustrating year. Looking forward to meeting some of the guys on here in person.

I believe Cragg when he says he will build a championship program. You need a championship coach! And there is one now we can and should get! Rick Pitino who has won more than anyone available! Need to try and get him rather than washed ups, has beens, maybe mid majors, and hot coaches who never built a program! Bring me Pitino!!

Hey Tom:
1. Don't be a stranger. Please post more on this site.
2. If you and your colleagues collectively have the desire and ability to write checks for a meaningful "buy out" sum then you may wish to call Mike Cragg. His phone # is 718-990-6138.

The school is aware of alumni offer! I couldnt post because I love Mullin the player and the man. It is never fun to watch the legend of the school fail, but fail he has done! Mitch might be a nice man, but not recruiting and contributing to Mullin failing makes me wonder why Chris considers him a close friend? Friends dont collect checks at their friends expense. I am so done with bad hires! We need a Pitino to come home and put us on the proper course. Need him to hire a Moe Hatten and another former player! Mullin knew Moe was looking to come back and help, why not give someone who loves the school and wants to help the opportunity? Every fan of SJU and alumni should really wonder why Mitch thinks its ok to collect a check while his so called buddy burns the place down?

I wouldn't suggest a former player join Pitino even if that was to play out (which I highly doubt it will). Just allow him to hire who he would like to bring along. He's afforded that benefit based on his coaching record. If he did decide to bring in a former player, then one would be enough (A Marcus Hatten as a DOBO).

If Mullin stays, I think both Matt A and Mitch should go. CM can't afford to have an assistant coach who only recruits, and Mitch was better suited for his special assistant role. We need those two spots filled with guys (or gals) who show up to the gyms and know their way around X's and O's. The tournament truly highlighted our lack of coaching and lack of depth. Watching mid majors, double digit seeds, playing well executed TEAM basketball, aiming to highlight their strengths and minimize exposure to their weaknesses. It's been great to watch high level college basketball, is it too much to want it here in Queens?

Dude can you guys stop bringing up Pitno. Bro, you know how expensive this would cost us? Buying out Mullin ( 4 million), hiring Pitno ( at least 3 million per year), plus his new assistants and recruiters and if we keeping it 100, probably the secret bag man he will need to land these recruits ( I don’t know the specifics but it’s going to be a lot). SJU doesn’t have the resources for this fam.

I have always seen Mitch's primary role as being the person to guide Coach Mullin to stay on the straight and narrow and to avoid past temptations.

If you want to run with the big dogs, you better learn to piss in the tall weeds. So there is millions to spend on consultants to advise the school on upgrades to facilities, but no money to have a championship program? You make no sense, then drop to the a10!! They will miss my donation this season!! I will just give koney marked for red and white and the school and give it to UNC since they are my local school! We need to start acting like fans of a BE school. SJU has access to more money than most schools!! Time to put om our big boy pants!! We didnt bring in Mike Cragg to become a low budget school!! Do you know or have any idea how much he raised just for Duke football, which was more dead than our basketball program?
