St. John's following many other local schools and suspending in-person classes. Letter from the president:
Conrado "Bobby" Gempesaw, Ph.D.
President
I write to update you on the latest decision made to address how St. John’s University is responding to the escalating coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. First, let me report that there are no known cases of COVID-19 at this time on any of the St. John’s University campuses or locations. The safety and well-being of our students and the entire University community are of primary importance.
Out of an abundance of caution, effective Tuesday, March 10, 2020, the University is suspending face-to-face instruction at all locations as an additional effort to keep our community healthy and assist with the containment of the spread of COVID-19. There will not be classes of any kind held on Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11. As previously communicated, the University will move to online instruction effective Thursday, March 12. Online instruction will continue through Friday, March 27. The University will provide future updates of how academic instruction will be delivered and communicate any changes as early as circumstances permit to ensure that students receive the instruction needed to complete coursework.
Students that are participating at practicum sites, student teaching, or clinical rotations should continue until further guidance is given by their Dean’s office.
All residential students are required to return home by Wednesday, March 11, at the latest. Students are advised to take what they need from their rooms before leaving campus, e.g., all textbooks, notes, course materials, etc., so that they can continue their coursework online.
Students who cannot return home will be allowed to remain in their assigned residence halls. Montgoris Dining Hall will remain open to serve those students. Students must contact Residential Life for authorization to remain on campus. The visitation policy is suspended until further notice. This includes overnight guests and daytime guests. No St. John’s commuter students are permitted as guests.
All New York campuses will remain open for business operations. By Thursday, March 12, staff and administrators will be informed by their supervisors as to whether they are required to work from home or report to campus. Information Technology is finalizing plans to provide any required technology and connectivity assistance.
Effective immediately, University events are cancelled, at least through March 27. Event organizers are responsible for informing guests and attendees that their event has been cancelled. This includes outside organizers renting space at St. John’s.
The University has set up a COVID-19 page to post communications and up-to-date information regarding St. John’s preventive measures to ensure the health and safety of the members of our community at www.stjohns.edu/coronavirus. Please see the latest March 9th update providing additional information in response to community concerns.
If you have any questions about COVID-19 or potential cases, please call Student Health Services at 718 990-6360 (select option 4).
I wish to thank our campus community for their continued support and understanding during these challenging times.
