TBT Update

Dear Fellow Johnnies,

On Friday, August 3, Overseas Elite defeated Eberlein Drive, 70-58, to win a fourth-straight The Basketball Tournament (TBT) championship.

Who is Overseas Elite you may ask? Well, they are led by former Red Storm players D.J. Kennedy (who was named MVP), Justin Burrell and Paris Horne. Overseas Elite is now a remarkable 25-0 over the last four summers.

The TBT has grown into a $2 million summer winner-take-all tournament televised by ESPN with a virtual Who's Who of former collegiate stars, multiple former NBA players and current professional players from around the world. It has even rivaled the NBA Summer League in interest, enthusiasm and competition.

After graduating St. John's in 2011 as part of the Redeem Team that brought the Red Storm back to the NCAA Tournament, D.J., Justin and Paris have successfully navigated professional basketball careers.

And they have never forgotten their St. John's roots. It seems like it was only yesterday that they were incoming freshmen.

So on behalf of Johnnies Nation, a special thanks and congratulations to D.J., Justin and Paris for again proving that St. John's produces amazing players on an off the hardwood. We look forward to seeing you back at alma mater!

We Are New York's Team ... We Are St. John's!

In gratitude,

Nick J. Vendikos '91SVC

This is the team I'll be rooting for in the tournament.

Two ex-Johnnies on it, including our #3 all-time scorer, and playing for a cause that, those of you who know me, knows hits close to home for me.

Nice!  I will root for them as well.  They have a real good backcourt, although I do think they need another stud to be contenders

Only saw one ex-Johnny (dLo) on Team Autism, but will be rooting for them.

In the TBT, why is DJ Kennedy playing on a Syracuse Alumni team?

Eugene Lawrence from the bad old Norm days is also on that team with DLO.

He wants to win $2 million.  So do the Syracuse Alumni.

He's the all time MVP of TBT, I think Overseas Elite disbanded.

PS DJ's Pittsburgh bud and fellow Overseas Elite star Deandre Kane is also playing for Boeheim's Army, as is former BC pg Tyrese Rice.  Not as many big SU names from the past on this year's team.

D.J. Kennedy: Former St. John’s star, TBT superstar explains why he’s playing for Boeheim’s Army

His inclusion on the Boeheim’s Army roster – a team mostly comprised of former Syracuse University players – triggered a few supporters of St. John’s to engage in a little online commentary about the suitability/loyalty of a former Red Storm player now wearing Syracuse orange.Kennedy heard the complaints.“I’m St. John’s forever,” he said. “But St. John’s doesn’t have a team, so I think they’ll let me go with that. And there’s no Overseas Elite. I’m sure some people will have trouble rooting, but hopefully they’ll root for me. But yeah, it was definitely a big question mark with St. John’s fans and all of that. I think people will understand. It’s a money tournament and guys want to do what’s best for them to win.”

A SJU alumni team with DJ, DLo, Shamorie, SirDom, Justin Burrell, just for starters would have been pretty formidable in the TBT.

DJ didn't have a great game but Boeheim's Army in the final for the first time. TBT success just seems to follow DJ and Dandre Kane around.

As much as I want DJ to get the $$$$$$$, I just can't get past the shots of all the cuse fans in the seats.
