Tariq Owens - article
If he's really put on 25 pounds since leaving here and still managed to increase his vertical, I'd like the name of the steroids that he's been using. Hopefully I keep my hair like he's managed to, though.

Or maybe we should fire our strength and conditioning staff.
I hear Matt's working on landing a replacement staff via transfer.

I wish both Tariq and Kassoum well amd hope they have good seasons and make progress becoming pros.
At the same time, I luv the resulting ‘trades’: Tariq for Figueroa, and Kassoum for Heron.
We didn’t get a Big in the exchange, but it frees Keita to get more court time and that’s a plus as well.
Now, all we have to do is play tough and win.

I enjoyed watching Tariq play. High energy guy who rarely gave up on a play. His shot is not bad either. Should be a contributor for TT.
I’m really happy for him and I hope he succeeds at Texas Tech.

You can say something negative about how the relationship ended but you cannot deny Tariq put 110 percent effort on the court.

It’s nice to see a young brother getting his bachelors and his masters degree. If the NBA doesn’t work out he’ll have many opportunities off the court.
No offense to Renard and him, but a junior who was the 4th best player on a 9th place Big East team isn't making the NBA. He definitely has gotten better, but there is absolutely no way he sniffs the NBA.

I wish he had stayed because he could have split minutes with Keita, both at the 4/5 spot. Our front court issue would have been resolved. Unfortunately his pops is more worried about his “touches” than actually playing basketball and winning.

The grass ain't always greener. Tariq is playing 10 minutes less a game that last year, 30-20. His scoring and rebounding numbers are down. What him and his father failed to realize is that since he can't create for himself, he needed players around him to set him up. We saw that last year when he started to come into his own. The guards got him the ball in spots where he was most efficient. It takes time to develop that type of chemistry. Instead of sticking around to build on last year's accomplishments, he chose to believe that he was better than he is.

Another casualty of the microwave generation.

Fantastic post Panther, you immediately got to the heart of the matter and said so succinctly what others would have said in a page or two.
What an expression ‘ another casualty of the microwave generation’. A phrase to be permanently remembered.
The 6 11 league leader in blocked shots would certainly have garnered serious minutes on our 5-0 undefeated team.

Tariq is a fellow alum who sat out a year did his work, got his degree and took advantage of a great situation for himself. I wish he would have stuck it out and he would have seen more rewards for himself, but he didn't.
Without a doubt, TO can make good money playing basketball. Good for him. I wish him well and hopefully everyone around him comports themselves with class.

It's important to remember that this Texas Tech squad is much better than us right now (11th on KenPom), especially last season. The numbers and MPG are obviously down but the efficiency is also up. I think W/ Owens this year we would have been an elite team, but to say this move isn't working out for him is a bit premature. Especially if Tech has a better year than us, which they are currently on course to do.

Weren't there rumblings at the end of last year that he really wanted to stay but his father basically advised him to look elsewhere?

Not sure what you mean by efficiency, but his FG%, FT%, 3Pt FG%, and blocks are all lower than last year. What I was trying to point out is that I don't believe that Tariq would have transferred if he thought he would only be playing 20 minutes a game.

I appreciate what he meant to St. Johns and wish him nothing but the best in the future.

I appreciate TO's contributions to our program. He left the program. I really could care less about his basketball future.

Tariq improved his game while he was here. However, we didn't lose Willis Reed here. He saw greener pastures elsewhere so good luck to him. He is no longer relevant to St. John's. Time to move on.

We have pretty much have changed to the transfer route ourselves. You win by the transfer and you can lose by the transfer. I think he made a mistake and wish he was still here but I'm not personally I'm not angry over this like losing Wiggins or Wilson etc ( wiggins not a transfer but close enough in my eyes )

He seemed like a really good kid. I might have been upset when it first happened but I wish him the best

This sure seemed like the best place for Tariq to spend his final year of eligibility. The problem with parents weighing in so heavily is that it becomes an emotional decision. That emotion can cloud reality.

From an outsider's perspective, many felt it was a distinct possibility that after a transfer he would play less minutes and take less shots. But that is not the picture Tariq and his Dad saw.

I wish Tariq well, but it is the players who stuck with us that I will want to see recognized on the Carnesseca and MSG jumbo-trons.

I agree Tariq would be playing more with us as it turns out. However, he is on an NCAA bound team and it was not a terrible decision for him to transfer. I wish him well as he always gave 100% for us. Transfers are part of the game today and that is obviously a good thing for us.

During his three years he represented school and team well and earned his degree.

I wish he stayed but hope he has intended success at TT and beyond.

It is interesting that many of us think Steere made a great decision transferring here, but Tariq heading to Texas Tech did not. Fandom! :)

We've got to remember these are 19-22 year old kids trying to make the decision that is best for them as we'd like all our kids to do. As long as they are playing by the rules and working hard for us while they are at St. John's I support them 100%.

Think the difference is Steere saw himself deeper on the depth chart than what he wanted. Owens wasn’t. He or his dad thought he should be more of a focal point.

If he was being recruited over and then transferred, don’t think folks would have questioned his decision. He was given ample room to succeed here.
