Syracuse

is it me or was there a lot more buzz for this game last year

Cuse was ranked #2 at the time last year. And everyone had high expectations for our team last year. Not so this year. Not after that providence kick in the nuts and 2014 recruitin class.

I'm still really excited for this game and season nonetheless

More buzz last year. Of course it was @ MSG and we would have a fair # of posters in attendance.

They were also # 2 at this time last year.

I think the mood this year is a little more guarded... although I actually think we are a better team all around and they are not as strong. I think we will give them a good game as long as we keep a lid on Christmas & Cooney.

We are going to win this game. 68-64 mark it down boys

Seth Davis prediction. Let's hope that he and sirvoo are right:

St. John’s (5-1) at Syracuse (5-2)

Saturday, 5:15 p.m., ESPN2

I realize we’re not supposed to acknowledge moral victories, but St. Johns’ loss to Gonzaga during Thanksgiving week has to qualify. The Red Storm were down by 15 points in the second half to one of the top teams in the country and almost came all the way back. Now it’s time for the Johnnies to take that confidence into the Carrier Dome. Syracuse’s offense is heavily dependent on post scoring, but St. John’s has one of the nation’s top rim protectors in 6-10 junior forward Chris Obekpa, who ranks sixth nationally in blocks with 3.8 per game.

St. John’s 68, Syracuse 66

This appears to be one of the weaker Syr teams in recent years but the combination of their zone defense and our perimeter shooting makes for a real challenge.

I don't understand how it's not a must win. With limited opportunities for us to pad our resume, a very tough Big East that will definitely beat up on each other and inevitably not get the credit it deserves, this is one of our few chances. Especially since I don't see us beating Duke. St. Mary's and LBSU, while nice wins, are not marquee wins.

We have the win vs. Minnesota.
St Marys s/b a "quality win" for the committee.
As long as we take care of business in the BE - i think 11-7 minimum and win all other OOC games exceot Duke, we will be fine, even w/ a loss at the Cuse. This game would just pad the resume.

Assuming we lose to the Cuse and Duke, we will be 9-3 OOC (not counting Franklin Pierce since they are D-6).
11-7 BE puts us at 20-10 heading into the BET where we would need one more win to give us 21 wins....with the BE significantly improved from last year it would be criminal to leave us out with that resume.

20 wins heading into the BET I feel puts us where we were last year, and as we found out, even if we had beat Providence in the BET we were not in. Also as I remember, the Big East had the 4th best RPI last year so how much improved is it really?

Have you been following college basketball this season?

Don't quite understand the question. Do you think the selection committee is actively watching every game this season? Heck no. They are going to use the stats I've presented such as conference RPI, SOS, and quality wins.

8 pages of a thread exhausted with predictions, predictable doom and gloom if we don't win, doom and gloom if we actually win, and that nearly extinct optimist that dares to suggest we just cheer for the team. This is easily my favorite website. Go team! I'm jealous of those that are making the trip, and hope that our boys bring it home.

A few optimists are still out here. I'm really pumped for this game and can't wait for it to start. I really want to see how we approach the hostile crowd and how we test the zone. If our guys trust themselves, use their experience, and bring their energy and intensity, then we'll win and use this as another step in a big year. It won't be easy, but I think our guys show up big time here. We are St. John's !!!

I remember when Syracuse was a great game and real competition however the numbers don't lie and
the recent record is atrocious.
Here are the coaching records.

Looie 13 wins 20 losses
Mahoney 2 wins 6 losses
Fran 2 wins 2 losses
Jarvis 2 wins 4 losses
Roberts 1 win 6 losses
Lavin 0 wins 6 losses

No wonder the orange fans don't worry about SJU anymore. At one time we held a few of the
top Dome attendances but that was years ago.

The fans still seem to enjoy beating us every season, especially at MSG.
