In the same vein, I work in Maspeth right now, in the industrial section right next to the new K bridge. Not familiar with those old time places you all mention, but eat at Iavarone deli all the time. Right off Grand Avenue.

Iavarone a staple. The first Iavarone butcher shop opened on Wilson Ave in Bushwick, right across from my Grandfather Pastry Shoppe. I'm going back to the 1920's. There's now a hipster restaurant in it's old location. The old Iavarone sign is still prominently displayed above the restaurant awning, as you can see.

Thanks Monte, I wasn't sure. It originally was on Grand Ave where I think they opened a McDonald's. For awhile they were operating two locations in Maspeth, made no sense. Sorry I made myself hungry! I have travelled all over and maybe I am biased as I grew up there but it is awesome pizza and very few places compare. It reminds me of home.

During my 23 years in Maspeth I thought the best pizza was from Jim's Pizzeria, not far from St. Stans. Even better was his Scungilli salad with delicious Italian bread to dip in the olive oil and vinegar..

That makes a ton of sense. I was under the impression that Lake Success was their flagship store.

My wife's uncle for years had a service station (no gas, just repairs) just east of Fresh Pond Rd on Metropolitan Avenue, on the North side. I wonder if any of you guys knew it.

One of my first girlfriends lived in Glendale right off 69th st. She competed for Miss Polanski in the Polish Society's beauty pageant.

In spite of the fact that I live in Manhattan, that Stop and Shop is still my go-to supermarket. Once every week or two, when I'm in the hood, I swing by there before heading back to the city and stock up. I can't buy frozen food, but everything else is fine. Much bigger and easier to navigate than Manhattan supermarkets, and a fraction of the cost.

I also go to O'Niell's a lot and Connelly's on occasion. O'Niell's another staple. Owned by Brfian Leetch's father in law I believe. Went to a St. Jude's benefit there some months back, and met Leetch and one of my childhood idols Rod Gilbert. Both great guys, Gilbert a pisser. Told us a great off-colored/non-PC story about him and Joe Namath from the 70's. I refrain from repeating the story here out of concern that it might upset some of the snowflakes.
