Steere Transferring

And Caraher is re-tweeting post from Coach Anderson today. Not something you'd expect from someone looking to transfer.

I think he stays....just use him appropriately.

It will be interesting to see if McGriff sticks around in face of upgraded guard group.
Does anyone know whether McGriff practiced and scrimmage with the StJ’s team this season, and if so, how much and how hard was he was able to practice ? Thanks.

Caraher will get more playing time coming off of the bench next season than most believe he will. Given the fact that CMA plays a long bench I will not be surprised if he is not in a regular rotation off of the bench.

St. John’s has one distinct need this offseason: a big man.

Ian Steere became the second forward from the Queens school to enter the transfer portal on Saturday, joining Damien Sears, according to a source. The departure of the 6-foot-9 sophomore opens up a scholarship for coach Mike Anderson and his staff.

The talented yet enigmatic Steere was supposed to be a contributor, but appeared in just six games. He also was suspended in early February for his inability to “meet standards expected from a member of our basketball program,” but was reinstated in early March.

Sophomore Josh Roberts, coming off shoulder surgery to repair a torn ligament, and incoming junior college recruit Isaih Moore now are the only big men on next year’s roster.

Can someone explain how the scholarships work? Can st johns revoke the scholarship if they want?

So although Steere is entering the “transfer protocol”, could that also be a nice way of saying st johns was not renewing steere’s scholarship?

Practiced here and there. He was just cleared for full activities within the last month.

McGriff was the next guy I was thinking about.

Is LJ still figuring things out? And only other guy I would think outside of McGriff that may transfer is possibly Caraher, you heard anything about him?
Dave apparently has keen interest in SJU Law School, so would not surprise me if he stays.
That would be a tough job playing major D1 hoop combined with first year law school.

StJ’s Law School ranking in US News is up to #74 out of 194 ABA Law Schools.

Caraher ain’t going anywhere. Good kid, hard worker, improved a ton. Kid will be a nice 4-year player for us. I sold him short too early on. He became a very good transition player to boot. Everybody will be happy to have him here. Great bench player.

McGriff I have no idea about. We shall see.

But the rewards for him would be amazing. This happened with my Ex girlfriend. She went to Syracuse and played on the softball team while attending Syracuse law school and She had plenty of big law offers when it was all said and done. SJU law is in the top 35-40 for big law jobs so Cararher is setting himself up nicely.

Hey if you can’t make it to the league try being the lawyer who creates the contract.

Too bad, I wanted to see what McGriff could do. I suppose he could petition for a waiver saying he basically sat out anyway. Having Posh here with same amount of eligibility probably killed any desire to stay.

Aside from law school, I remember a poster telling me that Caraher has a girlfriend here. . .

Caraher does a lot of little things that don't show up in stat sheets, especially under the boards. I'm sure the staff noticed those things and acknowledge them. He played with more and more confidence as the season closed.

Steere obviously never clicked here with CMA. Some kids respond by working harder others tune out. Give him credit for staying in school and working his way back onto roster. Wish him well, maybe to a mid major

Highly ranked and pumped up by the leader of the other board, probably because you-know-who recruited him

If I had a nicket for every post 6 months ago hoping for Steere to get a waiver to play immediately because he would be a huge lift for the frontcourt.

The 3 transfers brought in before and during 2018-19 season Caraher, Eli Wright and Steere. Wright never played a game, Steere was a complete bust and Caraher could maybe develop into a decent bench player.
He was a highly ranked kid. Not like a random two star kid people were hyping up. Clearly he has zero drive. Nobody knew that until it was clear when he wasn’t getting any minutes and we needed a big man.
I hope we are done with these highly ranked head case transfers. Get competitive kids that want to work and play.

I don't like saying negative things about any of our players, but Steere's body language on the court and on the bench left a lot to be desired. He threw off the vibe that he just didn't give a crap. When he got a chance to play, he was lazy and didn't put forth maximum effort, which CMA expects and requires. I wish him well and hopes that he changes his attitude for the next coach that he plays for.

Hopefully, we will fill that spot with a "big" that can contribute. We need a Wes Unseld type of guy.

Zach B:

"With one scholarship now open, St John's' top priority is adding a big who can contribute immediately, I'm told".

When asked by a fan is he thought we'd go after a JUCO / transfer or a high school kid (ie: Gray), Zach said more likely a JUCO or a transfer.

The interesting thing about Caraher I believe was that he was close friends with Steere. I think that originally influenced Steere to come. Guess Carahar won't be following his friend out the door. Fine by me.

What's on second?

I just don’t get kids who are not motivated by the opportunity to play D1 basketball. Missed opportunity for them. What a waste.

Good news is, I trust the current staff to find kids who are motivated and committed to Coach Anderson’s program.
