Ok deviate from the other thread to all things SJU. Name your top 5 St Johns Players of all time personal favorite not the top 5 overall that way it reflects when you were a fan.

Mine.
Mullin I wasnt a fan then but watched St Johns when they were on national tv and he was amazing obviously

I'm leaving Berry off my list and even jackson not because they weren't awesome but I didnt see them as much

So my top 5. Mullin,Jayson Williams,Boo Harvey Malik Sealy and Julian

Hatten Bootsy Barkley Artest Honorable mention

Tony Jackson, Sonny Dove, Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson, and Ron Artest.                                     I got your first 4 on my team too! But , Walter Berry has to edge out Ron for my 5 .    On the Bench , I have to put Reggie Carter , a bona fide All American for us in his Senior year .  Malik has to be in the top 6-7 also . Then, Felipe , etc .

Mullin, Berry, Sealy, Artest, Lopez but could be replaced by Champs if he has a great year.

Mullin
Berry
Sealy

and 2 surprises:

Eric Barkley: Had he played 4 years, he would arguably be the best PG to ever suit up. Completely unflappable and in command from day one playing the hardest position on the court. A winner from the start.

Moe Harkless: the best freshmen I’ve ever seen who still managed to dominate despite being double and triple teamed on one of the most bare bones team (6 players and an interim HC) in recent memory. Would have been a legend had he played a regular college career.

Chris Mullin, Walter Berry, Marc Jackson, Malik Sealy and Ron Artest , all 5 were All Americans with Chris and Walter each being a Wooden Award winner. Really simple selection.

No problem with Berry over Artest. Not going to try for a second 5, too many players. Will say that when I was in high school, 1961-65, Ken McIntyre was my favorite player.

The first name on Mt Rushmore should undoubtedly be Tony Jackson. I will admit a bias because I was a classmate and realize that very few posters ever saw him play so I will provide some evidence. Tony was an all American from game one at SJU. Nobody else can claim that. Prior to his first game the afternoon newspapers wrote about who was Lenny Wilkins, Providence’s best defensive player was going to guard , Alan Seiden,SJUs senior pre season all American or Jackson , the high school phenom. Joe Mullaney put Wilkins on Jackson who shot ten for fourteen on almost all feathery twenty two foot jump shots before a jammed MSG ,filled to see Oscar play NYU in the nightcap.
In Tony’s ninth game for SJU he scores 33 and gets 22 rebounds vs a ranked St Joseph in the holiday festival final winning the MVP trophy. At seasons end he gets 27 rebounds in the NIT final vs Bradley winning the MVP. He gets named second team AP all American in his first SJU season scoring 20 points and over 15 rebounds a game.
Lapchick coached a team concept so Tony never took too many shots ,about sixteen a game and he only played three seasons because freshmen were ineligible. Today’s players play fifty more games a career so his career stats are misleading. His career basically ended when he didn’t report a bribe attempt and was banned by the NBA but IMO SJU never had a better or certainly a more exciting player.

Tony Jackson, Walter Berry, Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson and Malik Sealy w Ron Artest right there

Some great choices and I respect the guys on here who saw players ore 1975 and could rate those guys.

All I would say is if I was trying to win an ncaa championship with all time sju players, George Johnson would be on the floor.

Just a different angle...

If it was most identifable w/ SJU

Mullin, Louie, Feilpe, and perhaps a toss up Mark Jackson/ Sealy (toss up)

For those outside of NY/SJU connection, Lopez definitely is associated.  I have a co-worker who played D3 basketball in late 90's.  When we first met, and I told him I wrnt to SJU his first words were that he remembered Lopez, Sports Illustrated etc.. and followed his path at SJU/NBA

The losing 62/63 team was led by Donny Burks at point guard (I was head of bb publicity at NYU student organization at the time) and always had the feeling that the dignity of Coach Lapchick was carried on to the court by him.  Fine point guard who played within himself and set up team mates for shots that did not go in.

Tony Jackson, Leroy Ellis, George Johnson, Chris Mullin, Walter Berry.  Then Ron Artest who always came up with big shot in crunch time
