St. John's apparel: Jerseys and fan gear

Winning is a part...but brand goes with it. Perhaps you got me wrong...sure winning matters to a certain extent, but even when this team came back to prominence and made the tournament, I don't believe things were that much more hyped up among students as opposed to now. If you have no cool ideas for memorabilia out there, no one will wear your product. Wearing a product builds hype in itself creating a more unifying experience. It helps bring the community closer together. Right now, there is no merchandise out there.

The point being that those other schools have cool alternatives...especially Nova. They literally have pages and pages of cool stuff that fans want to buy. 90% of the SJ stuff is basically high school level. I don't see how you can argue that everything is fine when we are a Big East school in the biggest market in the US that advertises and sells memorabilia like a community college.

For us, a national championship is just plain unrealistic. The Duke's, UNC's, Cuse's, UCLA's, Kentucky's etc. of the world basically have a strangle hold. Winning a Big East championship will be very hard as well and not very realistic. What is realistic is making the tournament and winning a game or 2. But even once we were just in it for the first time in a long time 2 years ago, I don't remember hearing about any attendance records or MSG selling out with red shirts everywhere. Correct me if I'm wrong. The demand didn't seem any different from my POV. I'm not saying we should have Notre Dame or Duke level stuff, but I mean come on...many other people see where I'm coming from. This is a major basketball power (historically) in the biggest market at MSG in the best conference (right now at least). I couldn't even find a replica jersey until the season was starting and there were no authentic ones on sale. Look on ESPN store and you can buy REAL jerseys from almost every major NCAA basketball team just as you see them on TV. Some teams even have like 5 different jerseys you can choose from. There is 1 for SJ.

I don't agree about our ability to compete in the next couple of years for a national championship, big east title, etc. Coach Lavin is laying all the groundwork for us to jump into that mix. However, I do agree with your points about merchandise. I've been looking for some things to buy these past few weeks and have had to search everywhere looking through pages of bad designs to find something worth getting. Winning will help us sell more gear, but much of our gear is not worth buying. The thunderbird doesn't make sense to us who follow the team, and it certainly doesn't make sense to those who don't follow the team regularly and ask "what is that bird supposed to be"? This is a good time to get a better secondary logo to go along with the STJ, so we can take advantage of the winning program that we're building.

another great idea for a secondary logo...a tornado holding lightning bolts...again obvious change colors and maybe his face a little haha but definitely cooler

THIS IS MY FAVORITE SO FAR! I incorporated a lightning bolt as the nose, storm is written in cool font as the face with eyes, and the nyc skyline looks like an evil smile! maybe i'm nuts but i think it's cool haha

This one is pretty cool and I would think a creative marketer could make some variation of this work. I didn't even notice the "storm" written on his head until you pointed it out. Keep at it.

I'm all for new merchandise and memorabilia, but if you think vendors and merchants are going to start stocking up on new StJ gear just b/c our logo is different you don't understand the world of sports marketing. You can design whatever logo you want, try and see how much the stuff will sell if the team isn't winning.

Get that logo to be an Indian with charisma. The Florida State Seminoles have one, so does the Chicago Black- Hawks. It gives the school a personality and makes one want to be part of and identify with.

Then also, you must start to win consistently, big games.

You fill up the Garden on a consistent basis and the fans get exposed to the merchandise and they jump on the bandwagon.

Get John Hamm to pitch it for you and package it right with some of Mike's water. BINGO !

The local team is still the local team. You seem to forget that. Jets shirts will be there whether they go 0-16 or 16-0. There should still be SJ stuff in the metro area.

Joe no one said that there should not be more merchandise as we are the local team. I agree with that, but if you want to see an influx of new merchandise a winning team will attract merchants and vendors quicker than some new logo. I've complained for years about the lack of StJ merchandise in local stores, no one is debating that. That's why I posted the 2 links. Like I said, you can design a new logo with your heart's content, if the team doesnt win it will sit on the shelves.

The downfall started with the Red Storm nonsense. I have yet to meet one person who thinks this was a good idea. Bottom line is, President for life Fr Harrington and the powers that be caved to some nonsense politically correct BS. At the time we had a 75+ year of basketball tradition. Wiped away with the stroke of a pen. Combine that with a down decade and there you have it. If you were going to re design the old Indian logo, I didn't have problem with that, but the Red Storm? Uggghhh. Side note, ordered some apparel from the bookstore last year. Wrong stuff comes, ( I guess they couldn't be bothered to check the order before shipping) and the sweatshirt I ordered (paid $50 If I recall) was as thin a kleenex. Back they went!

Another poster on here told me of a similar experience ordering from the school. Unacceptable.

I've ordered from the bookstore several times over the past year, and the only issue was with items that were sold out (and not marked as such on the website). What they sent and the quality was fine. They're not incompetent, so let's take it easy on the bashing of the bookstore. If we don't like the marketing or logo, that's one thing, but we may be going overboard a little.

The poster above noted that he ordered something and they shipped the wrong stuff. Another poster I know here experienced the same problem. We aren't talking about NFLShop.com with a thousand orders a day. Were talking about the STJ store. Nobody called them incompetent in the two posts above but its pretty clear that something is wrong.

I remember years ago walking into stores in Manhatten and always seeing St. John's hats and apparel. Try that today. By the way, the school makes money from anything sold with their name or logo on it. It would behoove the school to address this problem.

St.John's runs its operations as a 1970's mom and pop shop.

I hate to say it but I have had problems with ordering from the bookstore over the years...I know some of the people there so it sucks to admit it but I have received the wrong item and also have to follow up 2-3 times on an order to get it shipped out...Sometimes there are items that are available to buy online that I buy and pay for and then they are sold out and not getting the item back in stock...That said, they have always been very cooperative in correcting the problem and trying to get an item in stock or giving me an option on an alternative item...I hate saying it but it is not the best run operation out there

Fair enough. I may have just been lucky with my orders and wanted to put in a good word for them.

the thing that i always found the most amusing was that everything in the bookstore is ridiculously over priced, then you take a nice walk down to the kohl's in fresh meadows and they are stocked with Rutgers and Syracuse sweatshirts and hoodies for about 10 to 20 dollars less. no St. John's apparel at all anywhere in the entire store, and this is within a mile or two from the school.
