St. John's apparel: Jerseys and fan gear

Retailers are funny. They only carry items when there is demand. I wanted an outdoor SJU banner. The campus bookstore said they used to sell them but there was no demand. I ended up finding an online outfit that carried one Redstorm banner compared to dozens for other schools.
The reality is that SJU gets little support unless in top ten.

And by the way guys, on twitter Coach Lav actually said he would make sure to bring some new SJ gear very soon...whether or not that will actually be done remains to be seen.

When did he say this?

I thought I would have to wait until at least the doldrums of June to see a "I can't find an STJ t-shirt at Modell's" thread.

He said it like 2 months ago a guy asked him twitter to get more johnnie gear and he was like we will get right on that. Knowing Lavin I feel like I'll be blown away on what is to come

Monasch and the Marketing department are the main issues here.

I think everyone agrees that the Monasch firing is looooong over due.

Monasch certainly hasn't done anything to remedy the problem, but this issue pre-dates his tenure here

School apparel goes way beyond the athletic department. If you visit many schools, large numbers of students wear school apparel almost daily, not just to games. I haven't visited the campus during the day in many years. Do students wear school gear? i'm guessing not.

Can anyone verify where the STJ came from? I'm speculating that St. Joe's in Philly beat St. John's to the SJU.edu web domain name, and that St. John's decided to steer branding away from something (SJU) that would drive traffic (and potential students) to the St. Joe's website instead of St. John's. Other than that, I can't figure out why STJ has taken root. It took me a few years to figure out that our bland cheerleaders (whose cheers lead no one) were chanting "S... T.... J"

There was an article a few years back where someone at STJ fell asleep at the wheel and didn't renew the trademark or something.

As a current grad student, yes they do wear SJ rather proudly. If we got lots of new designs and cool shirts I guarantee they would be bought.

It just never ceases to amaze me that a major Big East basketball/soccer/baseball/etc. power has high school level gear. Look what SJ baseball did...they had many uniforms this year...one is normal the other is a throwback, and the other has the NYC skyline across the numbers and SJ logo on the front. It looks really cool. I just don't get it because basketball is where we made our name and the jerseys are boring and there is nothing out there for fans. You would think local Modell's stores in the tri-state area would carry them if they were flashy too. It's hard to support a team when you have no way to show your pride on your sleeve. Many mid major schools have cooler jerseys and memorabilia. Remember the old skyline jerseys from the 90's? Then Air Jordan took over and had some cool designs (for the time). Then Nike came and it's like all the creativity stopped. You can't tell me that hiring some marketing team to pump out 5 different jersey prototypes with really cool style and a fresh look wouldn't help invigorate the fanbase, as well as the program. I am telling you, players LOVE cool gear. These young ballers want to look flashy to match their style of play. The style we have is literally just 2 stripes on the shoulders and 2 stripes going down the shorts...that' IT. Why not some lightning on the shorts? Why not cool patterns on the sides of the jersey like UNC has the argyle? Come on people this is an NYC based Big East team on the rise and we have no swag.

Between my hatred for Syracuse and all this talk about stj gear, I started thinking ( never a good thing). As many have express here, not only do we lack the usual red storm fan gear but everything in the bookstore fails to capture any school pride (or at least the pride often found on redmen). So I plan on taking on this issue myself, of course with some help for you.
The best shirt the bookstore has had was about a year ago when they began selling the “ stj New York’s true basketball team” but within a week or two they were sold out. I never got mine and they never made them again.

We need more shirts like these, especially for the students. I’m not saying every fan should be wearing a shirt that has a giant middle finger, just something that’s ‘edgier’ than what the school would make.

So I challenger all you fans to come up with something that shows the rivalry between stj and Syracuse. The ideal shirt would be witty but also classy (we are a catholic school).
HOWEVER, I want to hear it all. Nothing is off limits as long as it relates to Syracuse. ( Canada, farming, Orangemen, taking back the garden, snow, nys team, ACC ,usa shirts, fine, drug test etc.)

Illustrations work too (ex. Johnny thunderbird drinking Orange juice)

My neighbor’s son opened a screen printing business I believe somewhere in jersey city. I thought I might return the ladder my father never returned and ask how his son is doing. I saw someone mention that they contacted ‘the 7 line’ to see if they could make some shirts, pls let me know how that goes.

To save many of you time, I am already aware of SU-cks

not to get off topic but speaking of syracuse i had a co worker send me this (our rivalry is needless to say very heated)

http://www.suathletics.com/news/2012/4/27/Yankees4.27.12.aspx

our alumni associations sucks as well. they have the whole new yorks team pretty much down pat at this point.

all i every hear about the alumni association is begging for money and some dumb carnival, which my high schools carnival was better.

Gotta remember one of Cuse's most famous alums is Brandon Steiner, head of Steiner Sports who is up the Yankees you know what. There is a Syracuse is NY's team sign in LF of Yankee Stadium this year. You can chalk most if not all of it up to Brandon Steiner.

I could not disagree more with your characterization of the St. John's alumni association.

I am an alumnus (Class of 1975) and have participated in a many alumni events including several golf tournaments, numerous basketball and baseball dinners, the yearly Lakewood (N.J.) Blue Claws baseball game and picnic, as well the annual BBQ at Monmouth Race Track.

And this doesn't include the, at least, dozen games that I attend each season.

These events are extremely well run and I have never regretted attending one of these functions. I truly appreciate all the time, energy and effort that is dedicated toward making sure everyone has a great time at any St. John's sponsored event.

In fact, I usually take a number of my friends who graduated from schools such as Georgetown, Boston College, Providence, Rutgers, Villanova, NYU, and Seton Hall and without exception, they consistently sing praises of St. John's. If truth be told, they attend more St. John's events than they do for their own schools.

I would respectfully suggest that you get involved with the university instead of aiming verbal insults at a group of professionals who work very hard to engage our graduates with their alma mater.

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Assuming you feel as strongly as you appear to, why don't you call the alumni office and volunteer your services.

are you speaking of the golf outing that is $1,000 a person?

you said it all just posting the year of your graduation...

I am sure that some of the events are great, but the demographic these sorts of events appeal to and reach out to is very narrow, missing out most of the alumni base, and loosing that connection through out the years. (especially if the teams are not performing)

I am speaking of the events that I am hearing about, I make sure to donate (what I can) and have all of my information updated in the school's systems.

I am speaking of the events that fellow alumni of other big east schools with same salary, same amount of years out, same industry, bring me to, and i have nothing to show on my end.

Yes, I'm sure that paying another 5k a plate to go to the Waldorf is a great event, but not one for me not for about another 20 years.

and to answer your last remark, I wish i could volunteer or work for the school but unfortunately I still have to pay off student loans. I also put in more than my fair share of involvement while I was there, probably alot more than most.

just my point of view, nothing to get angry about, we are here to talk about basketball, I'm sorry if my original post offended you or anyone for that matter.

Moose, thanks for that heads up. I didn't know that BS (LOL!) was an SU-cks alum. I have bought quite a few items from his company in the past for my son. I will refrain from such purchases in the future having been informed of this.

The7line only does Mets gear...they told me to contact CrosstownNY which does all other NY teams. I think you should do that shirt of Johnny drinking Otto with a straw and Otto crying LOL. That is hilarious. Also a "We run NY" shirt or "Our city...our Garden...we are SJ" with a skyline in the background and an SJ logo.
