St. John's and The NIT !!

Use to love watching St Joseph play at the old garden. When they came out on the floor their band played "When the saints come marching in."

Westchesterjoe, was Winning the NIT during the Lapchick era considered winning the National Championship. I have read on several occasions that it was, just curious!

The early NIT wins, not the later ones. In the early fifties the two tournament winners would sometimes meet and I think it was either LIU or CCNY that beat NCAA team or actually won both tournaments. Point shaving scandal in '51 blew up the momentum of the sport and particularly in NY. NCAA status started to jump after UNC with Lee Shaffer and Larry Brown beat Kansas with Wilt in triple overtime in 1957. Cincinatti beat Ohio State twice in 61 and 62, then lost to Loyola of Chicago in 63 and then UCLA took over interrupted only by Texas Western in '66. By then NIT was clearly the secondary tournament.

let me butt in...during the first lapchick era which ended when he took the knick's coaching job...yes.

the second era, which ended in '65...no.

If (and it is a big "IF"), we can muster the same sort of effort as we did against Marquette, we can progress. We have had a almost a week to rest up, important for Branch. Be nice to see Frenchie get hot from outside early and open things up inside for us...

When will you guys give it up and admit Frenchie is not a big east quality player? I cringe when i see him play. I am sorry but i just see what most of you do. Hopefully one day he proves me wrong.

RC, back in 65 the NIT was still roughly equivalent to the NCAA but, it began to swing heavily toward the NCAA after that.

Al McGUIRE refused a Ncaa bid one year with his Marquette team and went to the NIT instead but, that happened right before Marquette won the NCAA.

A lot of the East Coast Schools still preferred the NIT but, the NCAA began to assert muscle and $$$$.

Sorry you got it wrong! AS newsman 13 pointed out after 1953 the NCAA was the major tourment, After 1950 the NCAA required all conference champions to take part in their tournement. In 1951, 1952 and 1953 teams were allowed to play in both tournements. THe problems for the NCAA was Kentucky and several other powers of that era would turn the NCAA down to go to NYC and the NIT.

First could we please stop referring to norm when we try to feel better about the bad job lavin's doing. If norm took over a program that wasn't in the toilet he would've had better results. Lets face it norm left lavin an ncaa team and since lavin has done nothing with his 3rd ranked recruiting class. The NIT is a joke if they include st johns in the tourney. St johns has not earned the right to be in the post season any where. Finishing 2 - 8 in your last ten games doesn't earn you the right to play in the post season period. At St johns if a 16 - 15 record is something to be proud of then i should stop being a fan.

So if you start out 21-0, but go 2-8 over the last 10 games, which would leave you with a 23-8 record overall, you don't deserve to be in any tourney?

And were you implying that Norm was/is a better coach than Lavin?

No need to bring sense to the conversation. Take a look at a post from last week, and that should tell you all about him.

Yet it was only in the late 60s (if not a little later) that the NCAA championship game was shown on network TV. I remember watching the classic 1966 Kentucky/Texas on a local NYC station (probably Channel 11) via a "syndicated" feed from a company like Westwood One. Meanwhile, in the early 60s (went I first saw St. John's play) the NIT tournament was shown nationally (probably NBC).

Could anyone recommend a good place to eat tonight? I was thinking about trying Geno's but not sure if that's a good spot or not. I would be open for any food, not just cheesesteaks. Thanks.

I agree.

These posts bashing Lavin reminds me when Norm's friends and family joined this site and posted admiration masked as fans of the program desperately trying to save his job. It was funny to watch a sudden surge in members with a handful of posts under their belts all have admiration for Roberts.

These Lavin-bashing posts have an eerily similar style to them and makes me wonder who is really behind them and what their true MO is.

P.S. I'm proud of my school/team no matter what their record is. That's how a real fan is supposed to feel. Bringinthereal's above statement proves either he isn't really a fan or if he is, he should take his own advice and be a fan elsewhere. Go root for Syracuse and leave us alone.
