It's always a honor for St John's to play in the NIT, regardless of the regular seasons' results. The NIT was , for many years, up to the Mid 60's, THE tournament to play in and win..Which we often did..Lapchick's last game as Coach vs, Nova in 1965 was a great historic moment in our BB RESUME.
i remember the game well as I sat in the upper seats at the OLD MSG. For those who recall the OLD MSG, you could actually feel the place rock back and forth when the crowds went wild!
In those days more students went to the games then they had courtside tickets for, so us students often wound up in the nosebleed seats.
And, of course, the fans Stormed the Court after our win. For those who didn't see Lapchick Coach, he was something. He was John Wooden before there was a John Wooden.. A true iconic figure who was respected and admired by virtually everyone in BB , the media, other Coaches, etc. He never got the best talent either but, nearly all the players were from
NYC or close by..
His last NIT team had one of the best ever SJU players, Sonny Dove, the MacIntyre Brothers, Jerry Houston,Hank Cluess, I think and several others, I've forgotten.. Freshman couldn't play for the Varsity in those days.
I hope the efforts to erect a statue to the BIG INDIAN, as Joe was known then, are successful and to those involved in the project, please provide me info on how to donate.
Thanks for reading this trip down Memory Lane.
