Just curious to see some opponents even if just exhibition. Look at the Sonoma State roster...is it just me or do they look like a HS team insanely out of shape? Not trying to be mean here, just honest. They look like a team we should beat by 40 with backups alone.

Interesting that their roster shows a 6'10 guy, another 6'11, and a third who's an even 7'0
I know I know, I'm sure none of them are half as talented as Obekpa. But still...why does it always seem like everyone has a big man but us?

They were 17-11 last year, according to there schedule page. They are a Division 2 team, so yes we should wax them, but they might make it interesting for a half.

The 7-footer is definatly gone. He was listed as a senior, and that's last year's roster. The other 2 guys are probably still there.

I don't think they stand a chance even with a mid major division I program. I would even expect a team like Fairfield to beat them by 20+. Look at them, they look completely unathletic, no muscle tone to them at all, and some look a little pudgy even. I don't think they stand a chance even keeping pace with us running up and down the court let alone defending us. Concordia seems to be more of a challenge than these guys. Anything short of wiping the floor with them IMO is a failure.

Height alone means nothing. I'd rather have insanely athletic 6'7-6'9 players than a 7 footer who can't move and has no skill. You don't end up at Sonoma State for nothing.

Can't look at muscle tone and body definition to make an assumption if they are good players or not,

I'd venture to guess that they can shoot lights out from 3.

Should be a good game to practice the matchup zone against. 3-4 steals from Pointer. 3-4 blocks from Obekpa. Two exhibitions for SJU to rack up 100 points.

Sonoma is having an open practice at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center in Greenwich, Ct and then a fund raiser type dinner a day before the game. The coach (Pat Fuscaldo) is from Greenwich (Cos Cob) and still has family in Town. They then move down to Queens on game day. If any interest I can give you better specifics. Didn't think it was a big deal so I waited for someone to post under Sonoma State

One point I think is often overlooked about exhibition games is its a chance for the coach to try things and test things in a non pressure environment. I wouldn't be shocked to see both teams hang with us for a half. I recall teams doing that recently but then in the 2nd half us turning on the jets. Yes you want to win the exhibition games but I'm past the stage where I wanted 50 pt blowouts. Its the perfect chance to try things against those who don't see you everyday in practice.

Sonoma State is a team we should dominate even with our bench. Let's not pretend this is Marquette here. You are going to tell me being out of shape has no effect on your performance in basketball? I'm not saying you should look like Arnold in his prime, but at least have lean, cut muscle...most good teams do. This is the very reason players from 50 yrs ago would stand no chance of competing against today's players. The guys from way back in the day were stringbeans and much slower. The athleticism difference between our starters and Sonoma State's is gigantic. No need to hide that fact. And what tells you they are "lights out" from 3? I feel like every year we are supposed to fear cupcakes we should beat by at least 30...why? Call it what it is...a cupcake.

agreed. If the game were Frisbee Golf we'd have no shot whatsoever. (you'd probably have to be a local to get that one)

But IMHO pick any STJ 10 walkons from the past 40 years and they'd have the upper hand on SSU. No disrespect intended (seriously) but it is Apples and Oranges (grapes?)

That said, basketball is only partially a game of athleticism. That point has been proven time and again.

Good point about exhibition games being a laboratory to try things.

I don't want to take too much out of his interviews (I've been citing them a lot lately) but coach seems pretty concerned about getting the guys used to game conditions and game settings, so I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to treat the two exhibitions as tuneups for Detroit.

Maybe in other years he would play with different combinations, or running different sets. I don't know about this season.

So true Paul! Playing as a "team" and playing "smart" can be more important. This year we will have the athleticism, and I am hoping the young players gel as a team and use their smarts to put the total package on the floor.

Your point about athleticism is so dead on.
Archbishop Molloy has won many a city title because they had the best basketball players.
Give me Bootsy, Mullin and D'Angelo anyday.

Let's predict some scores...I'll say 96-64 SJ takes it.

Don't know the score, but it will be a beat down. We are sooo much more talented in every way than recent years it is not even funny. Im still amazed that so many rankings have us anywhere between 10-last in the league. Going to be hysterical to read the headlines and shock when we are taking good teams to the woodshed as the season wears on.

It really is amazing...I'm easily the most conservative guy on here when it comes to expectations, and yet even I think those rankings are ridiculous. I think it's because Bourgault, Sanchez, Jones, Branch are forgotten about by the national media. I believe Branch was a top 50 PG out of HS, yet he doesn't appear in any rankings because he is a transfer. Bourgault is not Steve Novak, but he is rock solid from 3, Sanchez was recruited by other teams, but never really caught a big time buzz, and Jones was basically not recruited.

It will be that much sweeter when we prove them wrong. It's always more fun to catch teams off guard like Duke 2 yrs ago pounding them into submission. Who knows, maybe we can pull off a Cuse upset this year. That would get people talking for sure.

We don't even know if there will be a game yet. If the storm lingers into Wed., Sonoma St. probably won't be able to get here all the way from California. I serously doubt they would go through a lot of trouble to make it up, either.
