SJU's Home Court

Nice post Beast but you would have to hold the students hostage to get 3 to 5 thousand of them to be at a game.

They all need grades. Probably could be arranged. On an odder note, did they ever put the dome on Louis Armstrong Stadium at the tennis center? 15K venue sitting empty might be a location for the annual Lou-Lou festival, 6 best Metro teams and two invited guests with four best hosting first round and then winners in semis and finals at the Lou Carnesecca Tournament at Louis Armstrong stadium, with Lapchick Award to MVP. Ten minutes from campus, plenty of parking, subway and LIRR access.

Just my two cents, as a student. I hate this idea. Think it should be split with the north east teams (PC, NOVA. GTOWN, SHU) coming to MSG. the expansions and DePaul/Mq should come to CA. so pretty much how we have it now.

Students actually come to CA games. When I go to MSG, I feel like I rarely run into familiar faces.

I don’t think we beat Marquette by 20 at the garden. Maybe we don’t beat them at all. If it’s about grabbing headlines sure get all the home games at the garden. But if the AD is really about wins and losses, he shouldn’t ignore the home court advantage we have at CA.

Also, the idea that it would help recruiting, maybe it’s true, But is saying ‘hey we play all of our home conference games at MSG’

That much stronger of a pitch than saying ‘we play about half our home games at msg with the other half at our loud ass on campus arena where we never lose’

If you want to do it that way Jack, then expand Carnesecca Arena. Blow out both ends of Carnesecca and add another 1,500 seats bring total capacity to 7,500. Short of that , I agree with Cragg, play as many games at MSG as possible.

True, for msg to be formidable we would need 3000 or so loud students and recent grads to help fill the place and make noise. It bv woukd be much easier to get them to a larger on campus arena whatever the magic number is

You articulate my basic opinion jack. Nice job

believe there needs to be a balance if we're not able to get above average draws with the Midwest BE teams. Have those at CA.

It's early, but Cragg seems to lean toward the angle of leading with NY's team image. If so, student attendance might be important to him, but not so important if he can draw a bigger fan base of non-students/alumni... The die hard students and alums will majke their way to MSG.

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. If anything and it at least helps us get the recruits we want like Precious, Kuminga etc. then my guess is Cragg settles this pretty quickly around BET timing.

Win big and repetitively is the only way I see an expansion at CA happening. Otherwise leave it alone and leverage it when it makes sense

Elite bigtime schools don't play in 5,600 seat gyms, if we want to be big time, you gotta think big time.
Mike Cragg knows what he's doing.

I guess you don’t consider Duke big time.

I was a student 15 years ago and our student government ran the student section and controlled the student season tix. Many people don't know this but the SJU student government is incorporated--I believe we were the first and still may be the only college student government to do so. When I was Treasurer I was also legally CFO of a 501c(3) corporation. We had a large surplus (600k) so we pitched the administration an idea to limit their liability for any acts that occurred at concerts or events by becoming a separate entity. The reality was we wanted to keep the surplus safe.

SJU Student Gov, Inc. had/has a million dollar + budget. We provided buses to home games and close away trips. We worked in conjunction with the athletic department and met with then Coach Jarvis to be on the same page. There is no reason these kids can't do the same.

Back in the day of msg sellouts we had a ton of weekend games that are easier to attend, and we didnt have late start games during the week. People wont stick around for 3 hours after work to go to an 830 start game.

Cameron holds 9,314 a lot more than CA!

Villanova plays a good amount of home games, including the one coming up Tuesday night, at the pavilion, which holds about 6,500 people and that includes some tickets which are standing room only!

And they play some big time games at the Wells Fargo center. So much like us splitting between CA and MSG.

If that setup works for a program that has won 2 of the last 3 national championships, I think it can work for us.

In the old days, before you were born, there was a required minimum average arena capacity for BE home games that teams had to adhere too. I believe that might have had some impact on how many home games were played at MSG every year and do not effect scheduling anymore. Probably applies to Nova as well.

Fair point, though "about half our home games" isn't accurate. This year, we play 12 at CA and 5 at MSG. UConn I believe has played 3 games at MSG.

That needs to be much closer to 50-50. Maybe have 7 BE MSG games and 2 OOC games. That IMO would be the sweet spot, at 8 CA games and 9 MSG.

Honestly that's another problem with these early Fox starts. To make an early game regardless of location have to scramble

Agree, but once you get there it's great getting home earlier. Somehow I manage to get to most of them at about tip-off.
