SJU Portal Targets

Not saying it is wrong, but I am not comfortable with this either. I respect the Big East and the coaches in our league. To take players from a league school because you have more money just doesn't feel right. If Danny Hurley and UCONN came after Wilcher because they are losing Newton, Spencer, and Castle, y'all would be singing an entirely different tune. Tell me I.m wrong!!!
If the player was already planning on leaving, I see nothing wrong, but if you entice a player to come out and poach them then that I have a bit of a problem with.

It seems like the staff is being patient. I’m hoping we can keep everyone from last year and add in the three freshman. If that’s the case we only need a 2-3 impact players. We don’t need depth pieces like last year, we have those already. Patience is prudent here w our budget we will get some impact guys.

I never really bought Pitino’s excuse that we were behind the eight hall with the portal last year bc he was just hired. Recruiting is so fluid I think it’s rare that a kid is fully committed before portaling. Once a kid enters the portal, it’s generally a free for all and any good recruiter should have multiple contingency plans.

Most here agreed/wanted player pay and increased movement.
Is that true? I for one didn't want that combination of pay and increased movement. No continuity, no loyalty to the school or the coach who developed you, high school players getting passed over for 23 year-old mercenary players, a handful of donors exerting massive influence over recruiting. I hate it.

I bought that spin because our $NIL basket and policy was at an early stage and unable to compete with deep-pocketed Power 5 and other top programs who likely had developed 'contacts' with many top transfers ahead of the Portal launch date and we were behind the curve.
It seems different now. By most accounts Rick and Matt A have been scoping out potential transfers for a while and a strategy is in place.
Just have ro be a bit patient as these are still the very early days of the hoops transfer circus.

Redenbacher,

None of what you say is wrong. However, I’ll stick by the comment that most people here have long advocated paying players. As such, we now have another version of “professional” sports. That is undeniably true.

We are free to take it or leave it but that doesn’t change the facts. We have people who have lobbied on this site for NIL contributions. Once money was introduced the devil entered the room. Loyalty is dead and gone. We have players who openly have been to 3 and 4 schools Or so it seems.

Again, I am not saying I agree or disagree. I lean toward not liking it but I follow like watching the Knicks and Mets etc. Right now we are in the “free agency” period just like the NFL!

I definitely don't like the portal / free agency / NIL situation as it currently stands
I'm in favor of kids getting paid but there needs to be a structured framework
If these kids are going to be treated like pros, schools should operate under a salary cap system like the pro teams have
Coach K often recommended in the past that there should be a commissioner for college basketball
In today's landscape, that would be a great idea because the NCAA is an absolute joke!!!
