SJU Offseason Thread (portal and recruiting discussions)

Will he accept that role is the question
.
He wouldn’t be on a visit if he didn’t accept whatever role the staff had already laid out for him and his agent/representation.

The transfer portal was made for guys like Dylan Darling. Said this on the podcast yesterday, he’s the perfect representation of the good of the portal in the NIL era sans sit out rules. Goes to Washington St. doesn’t work out transfers down, kills it, and now has a chance to play for the Big East Champs under Rick Pitino in the biggest media market with the talent of the #1 transfer portal crop. Pretty damn awesome sell to me.

That’s a matter of opinion . When one player goes into the game and another comes out of the game , isn’t that a substitution ?

Were Prey and Lefty in the game for offense or defense ?

Prey for defense and Lefty for offense ?
I trust Rick judgment on this one. He has won a few games 😎😎 I also agreed with him.Thst has to count for something!🤣🤣

At this point it feels like a Darling makes a lot of sense for a few reasons. Obviously roster build but you need a kid that will be content with coming off the bench. Given that Darling has two years left, I feel like he's perfect for what St. John's needs with this construction. Be the PG for about 15-18 mins a game your junior year, hit some shots, drive the rim when guys like Jackson, Sellers, Sanon are taking breaks from being on the ball or moved around between the 2 and 3.

Then, he runs point next year (if around) with a lot of talent around him that gets revamped while being a PG in year 2 under Rick Pitino that knows his system...like so many that have been successful under Coach P before.

I like the fit, and to me just makes sense and won't (likely) cost you seven figures that some PGs in the portal that remain are commanding.

Never heard of Darling or Mingo so asked around ...got this on Darling
"Better athlete than you'd think. Not elite by any means but holds his own. Good handle, excellent vision and willing rebounder. Nice range and tough at the rim. I liked him a lot. He can be exploited in the pick and roll and can get caught drifting. Competitive kid. I think he will crush Ricks workout. Only issue will be his size on some of the high switches. I actually like it a lot for them"

Sounds like a Billy Donovan type

What are the odds Rick told Jaiden and Brady, "Hey go to a lower level and kill it and who knows maybe a year from now we may have a spot here and well who knows...." Just sayin'...
This would make a lot of sense since these young guys need PT to develop and it’s just not available here right now. In fact, I really think this should be the model moving forward with some of these young guys who just need more development with PT than we can offer.

It would not surprise me. But, CRP wouldn’t just say it. He would only say it if he felt it to be true .
I’m sure that things were said at the exit interviews for those players with multiple years of eligibility remaining. Such as: if you work on the following things, and improve, then the door is open for you for your last remaining year of eligibility.

Moving forward I would not be surprised if there is more relationship building between coaches/programs of mid-majors and high-majors with that understanding of 1-2 years there, then come back here. Perhaps in exit interviews the high major coach may even advise on lower major school with similar system style where they can get that PT. The whole model is going to need some tinker eventually with the contracts, portal etc. and commitments to schools for periods of time.
