SJU Offseason Thread (portal and recruiting discussions)

The fact, re Zach, that the chase "...came down to St. John's over USC, Illinois, Kansas State, Georgia, Arkansas, and Kentucky.." and St. John;s prevailed comes down to the Pitiuno factor.

Zach also said the Johnnies may add two more guards, or at least one, and Mitchell still in the mix.
I'll trust Rick to hone this roster into a winning monster, and not panic, yet, anyway.
Both gotta be PGs

I think that there’s too much concern about who is going to play the point. If Rick goes with a pro style offense, Jackson will be more than able to handle the point. A point guard does not always have to have a pass first mentality, think about Jalen Brunson.
They don't, but college teams are generally better when they do.

Agree to some degree, but Rick made it clear after our games to comment on assisted baskets, versus unassisted baskets and he seemed angry after games where we had low assists numbers.

His praise for Devion and Kadary often revolved around their ability to set other guys up for open shots.

So this idea of not a pass first true point guard is a little baffling to me, but I guess it can work.

We all know teams where the PG is also a scorer, even the vintage Knicks teams with Clyde Frazier he could certainly score, he was not just an assist man.

I'd love a Bobby Hurley (college version) type, very high assists and could score when needed to. OK, OK, just a poor man's edition of BH.

Agreed.

I also think too much is being made by his Ian Jackson tweet.

I think they swung at a big fish for PG and now will probably look at a mid major supplement while using Jackson at the Point as well.

They are not going to have an all-star at every position. The roster is going to be awfully good even if they don't have an elite PG.

Some are anticipating where Jackson will transfer to after St. John’s. I guess that’s the name of the new game a lot of turnover and a lot of uncertainty from year to year. This from sports illustrated:

“With 5-star pedigree, solid production as a freshman and decent shooting splits, Jackson's size and athleticism could make him a target for multiple teams next year if the rising sophomore can muster a big season at St. John's.”

Really?
How I (we) will miss watching a freshman evolve into a senior as I recall watching Mullin, Jackson, Sealy and many others.

Yes.
Times they are a changin’

For what it is worth our only three games with under ten assists this past season (Georgia, Arkansas and at Creighton) were all losses.
