SJU Offseason Thread (portal and recruiting discussions)

I have been watching this circus since mid 80’s. We just came off of a historically successful season that ended with a bad matchup. But gave an old fan base a season to remember considering the years of pain all of of us old school fans have seen. Now we have a solid core returning with a bunch of high level kids coming in and we are losing our shit? What am I missing? This is as good as it gets. Great coach and another run at it next year. Wake up! We have the best coach in the country for another 4 years and that will be hard to duplicate when he leaves.. Enjoy this time. We will compete at the highest level next year in front of a packed MSG while being a top ten team. Get Marilac’s MSG hype video out and jump on board!
A pillar of logic. Thank you.

Who is losing their shit?

There is a great roster in place. But the most important position in college basketball is guard. Namely point guard. We had 2 last year. 2 high level point guards. And we won 30 games. Right now we have 0.

If anyone thinks the sky is falling they are nuts. But all I see here is dedicated fans pointing out the obvious that the most important position on the floor is empty right now. And if you look at portal position rankings. There aren’t many top flight pgs right now. Someone could enter yes. Tuesday is deadline.
Trust in Rick. He earned it. Only his opinion counts. If it does not work out, maybe second guess next year. Maybe. I doubt there will be cause to complain but we shall see.

Fland!!!
Get him, and s* would be crazy next year.

Not saying what rep should do with his money, but if I had his money I'd throw 4 mill at Fland, and see if that's enough. If Arky gives him more, we'll at least we tried.

Sometimes if you want a championship in the worst way, then throw extra loot, make it hard for him to say no.
That would entail Repole going up against the Tyson chicken heir. I don’t like Repole’s chances.

Updated Updated Reset:

Portal Targets Acquired (4):

Bryce Hopkins (Providence)
Ian Jackson (North Carolina)
Joson Sanon (Arizona State)
Oziyah Sellers (Stanford)

Players Departed (7):

Kadary Richmond, Aaron Scott, Deivon Smith (graduated)

RJ Luis, Brady Dunlap, Jaiden Glover, Khaman Maker (portal)

Portal Closes:

April 22 (last day to enter, signings may go on for 3-4 weeks after that I'd assume)

Things We Need (2):

Point Guard: Possibilities:
- Acaden Lewis (freshman) (maybe)
- DJ Wagner (Arkansas) (seems unlikely)
- Others (lots of poster speculation, but no other known target names at the moment)

Forward: Possibilities:
- No current information, but would be good to have a bouncy rebounding/defense forward

Perspective:

This is a TREMENDOUS group of additions. Indeed one might call it a #megahaul. It would be nice to land a veteran PG who has been productive at a high level.

Seems to me that option B is to find a veteran from a mid-major for security and/or try to sign Lewis. If you do both then your PG is Lewis and the vet and Jackson, Sanon, Sellers and Wilcher split time at the 2/3. If you only land one then your PG is whichever one you get plus Wilcher and potentially Jackson at times.

Fully aware that people's comfort level with that depends on their view of Wilcher, but as some have noted, if Pitino thinks Wilcher can play the position then that is entitled to some deference (although not blind deference). Personally I think Pitino would be right about that but reasonable minds can differ.

But it seems we have reached the end of the founded speculation trail for the time being and we are now fully into unfounded speculation for the remaining spots until some names emerge out of something besides thin air. Regardless, we are in an excellent, excellent place to keep up last year's momentum.

Excellent post LMF and exactly where I am. Get the defensive/rebounding PF type to come off the bench and either Lewis or a vet mid major PG (unless Wagner or some other high major point guard becomes available) and we are locked and loaded. There is no doubt in my mind that CRP intends to give Sim some minutes at point regardless.
