SJU AD Mike Cragg / The Athletic

The key to filling the Garden is to have a consistently winning and exciting program.
Build ‘that’ program and fans will come.

Remember, he comes from a school where kids literally camp out in tents for days to get limited student tix for games. We still dont fill student sections behind the baskets at ca.

I remember the days at alumni hall where the bleachers were so overfilled people would sit in the aisles, a fire violation that ushers tried hopelessly to keep clear.

We would need a plan to easily get 2-3 k students to msg if we are going to fill the place.

I'm pretty sure that mike has done the math and trying to negotiate lower rates to rent the garden for more games, lowering the break even. Rough estimates at 10k break even would be that we lose 100k for every 1000 under 10,000 fans. For 9 big east games at most our exposure is 2 million but with attendance bolstered by 2 sellout ooc games, the business proposition is pretty good.

Bobby Gempeshaw is pretty much brilliant at fiscal management and would require mike to do sound financial projections
Certainly no expert and i’m Sure this isn’t groundbreaking marketing idea...but for games where we aren’t going to sell out, they should discount corner tix and build a base of new fans - student, local HS or otherwise.

Also would like to see MSG use the curtains for upper tier. Looks dreadful when we have 7-8k
Can't do that unless you discount tix for STHs then. Otherwise you are smacking them in the face for loyalty.

Oh wait

That IS what SJU does
I like the idea of scheduling more games at MSG. I will get to see my buddy Mike Maher more than five times a season.
7 if you factor in Seton Hall and Providence road trips and not include SJU baseball and Belmont :)

Agree it’s what has happened in the past. Hopefully Cragg has a more appropriate answer moving forward. That was part of SJU’s Mickey Mouse operations in the past. Hoping it all changes for the better.

Pretty sure they dump on stubhub, but pretty sure the mets and many sports teams already do.

Teams don't directly

Do teams allow brokers to purchase and do that. Sure. Sell to broker. Give them a deal but then the broker runs the risk of not making back their investment. Some teams do not all. If I was running a team I wouldn't allow that but alas I don't.

If all the Garden is interested in is the 10,000 fan threshold , partnering with Iona , Fordham Manhattan , Hofstra , etc for these schools to get a game as part of a College BB doubleheader . I can’t imagine Iona - Manhattan in the Garden not being able to draw 3-5000 fans . Other Match ups could be arranged as well . I am sure each of these Schools and other locals would be thrilled to have 1 or 2 games a year at the Garden . It’s how it was done , back in the Day . Manhattan -Fordham was a great rivalry . It might help those schools with their Recruiting too . It’s worth a shot .

I doubt those schools move the needle much. Teams like UConn, Syracuse among others certainly do.

I Defer to your professional expertise

In the old MSG on 49th St., every other year there was a Fordham -Manhattan and NYU STJ doubleheader with the student bodies marching in to the Garden en masse. Lots of brew and much ado but a great event. Drinking age was 18 back then.

Re: Survey Questionnaire for Strategic Plan

It is a very exciting time for Red Storm Athletics! I am so proud to be the Athletics Director at St. John’s University and I want to let you know how gratifying it is for me to represent our great University. Thank you for all of your support. We could not do it without you.

Over the next few months our athletics program will be working with The PICTOR Group, an intercollegiate athletics consulting and executive search firm to assist us in engaging in a strategic thinking, visioning and planning process. One of our primary objectives is to hear from our stakeholders as well as others in this very important process. Hearing and learning from you is very important as we plan for the future of Red Storm Athletics.

I am inviting you to share your candid thoughts with us. I know you are extremely busy, but I encourage you to take 10 minutes to complete the attached Survey Monkey Questionnaire. Your candid feedback will be confidential and will be summarized in an aggregate format. Your perspective is important so that together we can make St. John’s Athletics a great experience for you and all of our fans.

Give Cragg a lot of credit for trying to improve things at St John's
Let's hope he has some clout with upper management for a change
It's about time that we move our program into the 21st century
