SJU AD Mike Cragg / The Athletic

Good to see that we have a game scheduled with Arizona in California next December.

Would like us to play a team like Syracuse, or UConn or UNC (been awhile since we played them) or

Kentucky (last played them in 2011 in Lexington) or Michigan or even UCLA at The Garden next season.

Arguably, those games could draw 12K-15K, at least.

Also hope that we play Duke at MSG in 2019. Would think this is likely.

Alternate Duke and ND as the OOC garden game. We have a lot of history with ND, and they would draw in NY.

St. John's AD Mike Cragg confirms he's in negotations with MSG to play all Big East home games there next year. Plan is also to have two significant non-conferences games at Garden as well. #sjubb

Man this guy is awesome! Can't believe what a difference a new AD can make.

lol, and it takes a Duke guy to get this started? No one before him even thought of that idea?
Thanks for coming to SJU Mike. Gotta have MSG for when we're real good and more and more want to go to games.
gotta expect the opponent fans to come as well, how many tickets do the visiting schools get, 3k?
So, maybe 14-15k SJU fans rocking msg like it's the 80s all over again.
Need MSG for recruits also, Preicious knows this year we only have 4 games at msg.
If Mike gets this done, Precious eyes will open up, wow every game?
Use MSG to our advantage.

“St. John’s is committed to [being a] championship-caliber program,” Cragg added. “We are becoming that and that should be attractive.”

And playing all those games at the Garden would no doubt be an excellent recruiting tool for coach Chris Mullin and his staff

“Cragg said that in talking with alumni and administrators there was a consensus desire to play conference home games at the Garden. And Cragg added, “it was making an observation from my time in college athletics: people see the Garden and the St. John’s brand as tied together. Kids come to New York City and St. John’s to play there.”
Though he would not characterize the process of the negotiations thus far, Cragg said that what it would take to make the vision real is “making the partnership between St. John’s and Madison Square Garden better.”
Cragg is negotiating with a familiar face in MSG’s Joel Fisher, Executive Vice President for Marquee Events and Operations. The two have been doing business with one another for approximately 20 years, Cragg said, and “Joel and I know what a good partnership looks like.”
Fisher attended the Oct. 2 introduction of the AD, but Cragg said “this doesn’t just happen because we are friends – at the end of the day is will be a business decision for both organizations.

Yes it took a dookie. It also took the Big East brass to give a hard-line from what I’ve heard, to the mom and pop show to hire a real AD to get this rolling. It was a great move and it will pay dividends in the future.

I have mixed feelings. Of course, everyone loves the Garden. But I also love the energy of important games at Carnesecca.

However it turns out, I'll look forward to seeing all you miserable die-hards at the games.
Hopefully he will have a plan to help students get to the Garden games.
Remember, he comes from a school where kids literally camp out in tents for days to get limited student tix for games. We still dont fill student sections behind the baskets at ca.

I remember the days at alumni hall where the bleachers were so overfilled people would sit in the aisles, a fire violation that ushers tried hopelessly to keep clear.

We would need a plan to easily get 2-3 k students to msg if we are going to fill the place.

I'm pretty sure that mike has done the math and trying to negotiate lower rates to rent the garden for more games, lowering the break even. Rough estimates at 10k break even would be that we lose 100k for every 1000 under 10,000 fans. For 9 big east games at most our exposure is 2 million but with attendance bolstered by 2 sellout ooc games, the business proposition is pretty good.

Bobby Gempeshaw is pretty much brilliant at fiscal management and would require mike to do sound financial projections
