Bottom line is that when we win, fans come to CA.    When we don't fans won't show up even with a new arena.     If we did ever build a 10,000 seat arena, the ROI would be poor on the additional 5k seat revenue, considering a cost that could approach $100 million.    At most we would play 12 home games on campus, and even if you sold out every game, gross revenue from those 5k seats would maybe be $250k per game if average ticket prices were $50.   Only winning and significant donations will drive a new arena.

I've been told that Cameron Indoor Stadium is a dump also, yet students line up for days for a chance to get a ticket to a big game.   I would love either a new or renovated arena, but it's not in the cards.   Villanova's renovated Pavillion, now called the Finn, is dazzling.   They wanted to build a new arena, which was jump started by a $22 million donation, but Radnor township gave them such a hard time over insufficient parking to support a larger arena, that they renovated rather than build.    Villanova, without a capital campaign is raising $100 million per year in donations, and that made it happen (spurred of course by two national championships).    When SJU wins big, better things can happen, but right now the athletic department needs major help in terms of donations to improve athletic facilities.   We all expect Father Shanley to cough it up, but honestly, even if he fronts the money, if donations do not follow, that flow will diminish pretty rapidly.  Winning will not generate the revenue all by itself, it will have to come from an expanded donor base fi we are ever to be a consistent top notch program.    Bill Janetschek got us off to a great start with a $1 million donation for athletic facilities, but I'm reminded that to build a large and strong alumni base of donors, $100 donations are just as important in the big picture.  .

I don't know anything about USB /media/kunena/emoticons/dizzy.png arena, but from passing Belmont on the Cross Island, it doesn't seem like it is remotely as convenient to walkable amenities as the Garden.


 

As an Elmont native, I'm hoping the area builds up around the arena. I've haven't been off the freeway over there in two decades, but it was pretty seedy. Not sure if still is that way. Great pizza at Hempstead Turnpike and Meacham Ave. for those who will be driving, though.

 

You are talking about King Umbertos, I take the family there somtimes for dinner. Service and food are very good very good.

Man, I've lived in the general area for 40 years, and didn't visit King Umbertos until a cousin from Queens recommended it.   I've only been there twice, but the second time, by chance Kevin Barry and his wife were at the next table.   Old school Italian place, red wine and white tablecloths in a dark paneled room.    Try the stuffed artichoke, which is great. 

Stella's on Jericho turnpike is another great old school Italian place, and the Umbertos on Lakeville Rd makes perhaps the best pizza around.   Upstairs is a great more formal restaurant too.

I think it would be safe to say that Fox sports, Big East leadership and the other conference schools would prefer that SJU play its conference games at MSG or UBS/Belmont.
Toward that end, perhaps Fox and the conference could provide some financial assistance to St. John's, until our attendance picks up, which should be on the horizon.

I’m sure MSG is expensive but , at what point does the Program have to step up and just recognize a New CA is not in any plans to be built .  Playing in CA diminishes the Goal of the Program to be BE Competitive and rise to heights not achieved in decades .     The key to better attendance and bigger Crowds at MSG is a better team . . We seem to be on the verge .  And , I can’t imagine a favorable deal could not be struck with the new Belmont Arena , at Rates better than MSG .   I’m not advocating all.CA games be abandoned but , just BE Games and OOC games against National Powers .  We can continue to play St Francis , St Pete’s , NJIT , etc at Louie’s Place .

To play devil's advocate, I remember going to games at MSG during the Lavin era vs teams like Depaul, and literally nobody was there. I don't see any reason to have games like these outside of CA.
