Should we stop playing all men’s games at CA?

This is the year to raise the bar and play as many games at MSG and Belmont.....Agree with others play a few at CA.........Its time to be a be a NY top tier program again.....with a professional coach, a top AD and a President who understands sports its time to go for it! We have a top 25 team we need to stop aiming low....GO SJU!

Rob - re: Hall practice facility

As part of $100M bond for campus improvents they are planning practice facility improvents.

"The plan also includes a 43,000 square foot renovation of the Richie Regan Athletic Center Field House to include an addition to the building that would house a new practice basketball facility which would include a full practice court as well as side courts, new administrative offices and new player locker rooms, among other amenities."

Sale of alcohol is a school by school decision so if SJU wants to do it, they can.

Untill we start being able to fill up large o/s arenas, we should continue using CA.  Using MSG or new Belmont will not give us a home court advantage as at times it seems the visitors have more supporters in "our house".  Need to sell out CA and then sell add'l 4K MSG, et. al. seasons for games at those venues if we are to ever achieve a home court advantage.  Also you lose student attendence with an off campus arena.

Lastly, Walsh is a dump with a stage at one end.  Doesn't have BE minimum seating capacity.  Little more than a HS gym.

I don't get the dumping on CA.  I am with Beast.  The place is great with every seat and bench close to the action.  And when you're hungry the storm burger tastes pretty good.  It only heats up when we have a crowd, so that is rarely a problem.  I would take Mike Maher's comments with a grain of salt as he has not been there since his favorite coach Norm Roberts was on the side line.  Sadly, he doesn't know that CA is as much fun as sitting in section 114.

nah whatever year sly fox closed and to be fair you are on so many blood thinners a volcano seems like Antartica to you

Serious question about the desire to play games at UBS Arena. Are those who are suggesting it just doing so because they live in Long Island and it's convenient?

I agree with staying at CA
about 5500
ive attending right before mullin

unless you get well more than ten thousand at msg.  It’s not worth it

ive been to many msg games with not many more fans than at CA

Living out of state, I go to CA or MSG as home game schedule lines up w/ family visits or work related travel so I don't have a personal huge lean on one over another. Each have strengths & weaknesses. Here's my take on why USB should be in the mix (along w/ MSG & CA).

It's 7 miles & < 15 min ride from campus.  Easy enough for the team to travel to/from for gameday as well as occasional practice etc. Also, may be easy enough for on campus student shuttle vans.

Building looks beautiful, inside & out. At an iconic location of the racetrack.

Would likely help drawing increased attendance from those alums (many live on LI) who don't want to take family and sit in cramped CA, or take public transportation, or deal w/NYC traffic & parking @ MSG.

Assume it might be cheaper than MSG for committments by school. MSG doesn't make MSG seem like a true home.

I went to the Seton Hall screwjob game at the Rock, and taking the game away, I can see how this game experience and size of arena etc is a nice option of a home court for Hall.  I can see USB being somewhat similar for St. John's (again w/ MSG still reserved for biggest games).

Why should we stop playing at CA? It's our on campus home arena.  If there is any kind of commitment to Basketball then it's history demands we upgrade it.
I would rather watch/ be in a home crowd advantage environment than the typical 50/50 we draw in MSG vs most opponents.  Make CA a dreaded trip for opponents build on a limited fan base instead of the whining about it's amenities.  The game is the only priority.  MSG is much more of a motivating factor for opponents than St John's.

Agree. Not a big fan of CA, but comparisons with Walsh are absurd.

FYI Sju was already invited to and accepted an invitation to tour the new facility at Belmont.    It makes more sense than Barclay since it's literally 10 minutes or less from campus, right off the Cross Island.  It would be the easiest arena off campus for students to get to, if they ever emerge in force.

I think it's great to have a brand new facility so close to campus that could become another home.

FWIW, sju does recognize the value of MSG as a homecourt and begrudgingly loses money when attendance is below 10k.

I like playing games at Carnesecca.  Of course, I would like to see upgrades, but the true home court advantage is something to consider.  I would also like to see MSG games continue as it is a huge part of our history/identity and often mentioned by recruits as an enticement.  Regarding USB, it's not convenient for me but I think the program should play a few games their and weigh any advantages.

Lastly, I would play UConn at CA.  As many will recall, their fanbase travels well to MSG and it is not a strong home court advantage for us.

I love Carnesseca.  I was last there for the Butler game on new years ever and the place was crazy.

Id like to schedule more big time BE opponents there, not less.

Carrier Dome is on the Syracuse campus, and they sell beer there.

Going to games at Carnasecca can be unbearable at times. For the games against the bigger opponents where it gets very packed you can barley move, if an overweight person is sitting next to you his butt is in half your seat, it’s 100 degrees, and my back will be in shambles for days.

My buddy and I who share the season tickets are in our early 30s and can barley stand it I can only imagine how rough it is for many of our senior citizen fans. Our tickets are also on the aisle so if they moved our tickets to the middle of the row I think I’d just give the tickets up all together.

Bottomline is they have to do something at least. I know a brand new on campus arena would probably not be feasible, but can they at least make the seats all seatbacks like the ones behind the benches? Still wouldn’t be ideal but I think that would make it at least a lot better.

Most high major OOC opponents, Nova, Georgetown and Uconn should always be at the Garden (KU being an exception this year because of the Belmont arena, which is a very nice venue in its own right).  I know folks want to play Uconn at CA because the Huskie faithful will make the trip down, but so what?  Uconn is a national, high major visible program, our fans should show up to that game at MSG too, and playing in front of a packed house at MSG is better than anything.

After that, it depends on how the other BE programs are trending and of course scheduling issues.  With how Seton Hall has been recently, I think we should play them at the Garden too, but that's no guarantee because the Hall fan base doesn't really travel for that game.  Providence I almost prefer playing at CA now because it drives Cooley insane.  The Midwest schools, absent scheduling considerations, should almost always be at CA in my view.  They won't draw and we get a legit home court advantage.

Nothing you said is inaccurate. I'm 38 and my wife is 35. I find it extremely uncomfortable to sit and watch a game there and my wife won't even go anymore for that same reason.

On the positive note, it's a true home court advantage. I can't recall a time ever seeing opponents fans show up to CA. That's pretty valuable.

I understand your wishing to play  UConn on campus to cancel  the Huskies bringing 10,000 fans to MSG and making it, in effect, a neutral court. The problem is all the revenue we would be losing. The school needs the money. A solution might  be, as has already been suggested, play them at UBS Arena. It would reduce their fan presence, but still give us the potential revenue increase.
To make an informed choice between MSG vs UBS, we need to know the rental cost for each. Also, the ticket holders and other interested fans should be asked for their opinions re which arena works better for them. Maybe weekday games work better at MSG and weekend games would go to  UBS?
It makes sense that UBS would want to have a college basketball presence and would make it in our interest to move games away from MSG.
