Shanley : need for better basketball facilities

Signing Mike Cragg and following that up by getting Father Shanley to sign on feels similar to signing Mullin and Berry and Felipe and Zendon.

I have heard this so many times in the past. Only difference this time is we have a competent admin and ad. Hopefully renovations are done to taffner and carnesecca

I think we all wish for a new/renovated on-campus arena but in the interim what about signing an agreement with the new UBS arena?  We're already playing Kansas there and it could be our chance to play in a state of the art facility.  UBS is fairly close to campus too, my guess it's 6-7 miles.

Finally, all of the stars are perfectly aligned to move our basketball program forward. We now have a President who sees the vision, honors the history of our basketball program and has the desire to once again make it the lighthouse program that it deserves to be. We have an outstanding, creative, highly visible, visionary and supportive Athletic Director and a head coach and staff that can recruit and develop talent and has our kids playing an exciting brand of basketball that has (and will continue to) generate a great deal of fan interest.

After years and years of frustration, it's great to see that we are finally on the right path to being a force to be reckoned with year in and year out once again.

a couple of thoughts.  While fr. harrington can be given credit for updating and renewing the campus.  He dropped the ball when in came to Alumni Hall/Carnesecca arena.  The renovation back in 2005 was done poorly.   cragg recently had rendering on twitter and it looks like the space between carnesecca arena and taffner will be built up.   otherwise it the plans look like it is in its early stages.

An upgrade/new facility will take lots of $$$$$. Unless we get a generous donor, I don't see it happening. I know we're not taking the money our of the schools endowment (if we have one).

Back to my post I had a few months back about no more games at CA. We need to move our games to UBS and MSG or maybe just UBS. Knicks and Rangers attendance is down I wonder how much is due to the surging crime rate in Manhattan? Also the pandemic has moved the 9-5 corporate guy to work from home rather than trek into the city. Maybe UBS is the answer ?

Let’s see how UBS works out.  No events there thus far.

If people complain about the cost of tickets at CA, UBS will be ridiculous and then add in the parking fees and ticket fees.  Think Miss. Valley and Wagner costing $70/game.
Don't wait for a big time donor to do it all but get ready to cet out those checkbooks or donate appreciated stock and get a better tax benefit.

Knicks and Rangers drop in attendance has zero to do with surging crime rates

Moose I’ll agree to disagree I think it’s one of many factors.

Pretty much all professional sports are suffering in attendance.  Even NFL teams aren't selling out.  There are much bigger factors at play that are stopping people from attending games like they used to.  Any crime uptick in NYC is just a coincidence.

---- Do you understand that St. John's playing at the Garden is not free ?

If St. John's does not sell (something like) 7,500 tickets for a game then it must write a check to the Garden, so no; don't hold you breathe hoping for many more games to be moved to MSG in the near future.

This game might not be a good barometer as St. John's is not selling the tickets and Ticketmaster is pillaging anyone who wants to attend. I wanted to purchase six tickets and the approx $30 additional cost for each ticket deterred me from attending.

UBS will never be able to compete with MSG involving college basketball because high school and college students who make up a reasonable per cent of the attendance and who don’t have a car can from just about anywhere in the city take the subway to MSG but will have to absorb the cost and inconvenience of the LIRR or the cost of a car service to get to UBS.

If you listen to or read Fr Shanley's statement, he is all in favor  of more games at MSG and the crowds will come. All lit takes is winning games   nice to have a head of the University who understands  the history of SJU basketball is intertwined with MSG and will continue into the future. Big time Division 1 basketball demands a big time venue in a big time arena in a big time city like NYC.
