@Seton Hall, Sun. Dec. 31, 5p, FS1/570AM

BTW whoever mentioned the thing about Mullin and the Refs the other day is right

I mocked that dope but maybe he has a point. The first T, the bench T, that was nonsense. The T on Owens was him getting in some guy's grill after that guy pushed a SJ player, that was also nonsense. The Mullin T - the announcers said it was for leaving the coaching box, all I saw was him slapping his hand to simulate a foul on Ahmed, and Ahmed was arguably fouled - that was more or less nonsense. So maybe that dope isn't a completely full of shit poseur. But if he isn't, and the refs have it out for Mullin, and their animus is affecting the outcome of games - and three T's in a five point game where 34 total fouls were called is suspect, in a game where SH took 23 FTs to SJ 11, making three more than SJ attempted - then that dope should step up and name the referees who are fixing the games. Because if as he says he has that information, that's a big freaking deal.

Boy if only Simon could shoot

He wouldn't be here if he could.

He'd still be at Arizona, or in the NBA.

Yep, how was Simon a 5-star coming out of H.S? I seen him go in for a lay, it looked like a half layup because the ball only went halfway up. When I seen that, I'm like ok WTFFFFFFF was that???????
Simon looks like a 4-star to me, he would have gotten only 10minutes per game if he stayed there.

First I want to commend Simon, Clark, Owens for playing at the highest level to keep St. John's within a bucket or two from a major upset with a woefully undermanned roster.  These three were outstanding in their hustle and determination and we are lucky they are returning next season.  While Bashir Ahmed got his usual points the hard way from the 3 point line he did not excel enough to compensate for the 20 useless minutes played by Kassoum Yakwe in a starting role.  While blessed with all the physical tools to play on a D1 team he continues to be just an average player in all other aspects of the game.  In sharing the ball, assists, rebounds and perimeter defense, Bashir Ahmed continues to underwhelm.  He will get his points which may impress some but he will never be a difference maker.
This actually was a winnable game as undermanned as St. John's was mostly because Seton Hall was below average from the foul line. It was winnable even though a player on the bench received a technical which only St. John's could accomplish. It was winnable even after our head-in-the-clouds coach spouted off while we were in the midst of a comeback. Uneffing believable!
To Mullin's credit he did have the kids ready to rumble.  He wisely used his bench to keep his starters from fouling out early. He also recognized that Alibegovic is a liability by limiting his minutes.  I'm also disappointed with Trimble who provided evidence as to why he was released by Florida State.  Other than a 3 point set shot he does nothing else particularly well.  He certainly would not have stolen minutes from Mussini but hopefully Mitch Richmond will work with this kid to make him a basketball player.....something he is not at present.
Again, while both Ponds and Lovett are out I do not see any wins on the horizon.  Not because we lack experienced coaching or talented players, which we have, but because our bench is one of the least talented and most offensively challenged in the conference.
Here's hoping that the staff is not jerking our chain in regards to the injuries because the players who gave 110% tonight deserve to be surrounded by players on the level of Shamorie Ponds and Lovett and not an Alibegovic.

Not enough Marcus hasn't played in a month - he had to contribute a tech during this affair. CM should have sent him to the locker room.

Great, gutty team effort otherwise.

We are... St. John's
We are 0-2 also.

Guys played very hard. They do have to defend the three better, but I do like this group.

We will win BE games.

I thought Owens out played Delgado today and he showed great versatility and hustle . his outside shooting is a cause for optimism .

Our bench? What f'ing bench? Ohhhh you mean Ali and Trimble?

Lol! Well today the bench was Amar and Trimble but with a full roster we can count on Yakwe to fumble 3 passes and score 2 points. Poor kid just has poor hands and no outside shot. I still root for him because he's trying but I expect the freshmen coming in along with Keita to take all his minutes unfortunately because they all appear to be better offensive players. If Kassoum has unrealistic dreams of playing post collegiate ball he may transfer. If he's smart he stays and graduates and gets a job with a multinational corporation. He should also look at players and former teammates Jones, Sima and Williams who are in no better a position than when they played at St. John's.

Owens has a BIG HEART!

Owens is the most important part of this season'sSt.John's team.

Maybe next season OTIS because as long as the two most important parts of this team Ponds and Lovett stay on the bench you won't see any more W's this season. No one is important when you are losing every game. That said, if Owens gains 20 pounds and works as hard in the off season as he did last summer he will be a pro prospect as a forward with 6'11 NBA height and speed. I am salivating at a front line of Keita, Owens, Clark, J'Raan Brooks and 6'10 Williams.;)

I agree Paultzman, screw moral victories at this point. It’s too bad about Lovett and Ponds. We just have to hope to get healthy by the Big East Tournament and hope to make run. The regular season is over. Just not enough bodies.

The regular season is over? Really? Silly

I meant if we don’t get Lovett and Ponds back soon. We won’t have success in this league without them. We aren’t a deep team even with them Boo

Great post - couldn't have put it better. Positive spin is with Owens, Clark, Simon & Ponds (and Lovett if he decides to stay one more year) plus our freshman class and red shirt transfers coming in, we will be very good in 2018-2019.

Wasn't last year: "Oh with Simon and Clark coming in, we will be very good in 2017-18.
I know, I know, injuries. Bottomline though, with every lose there's less and less chance of even making the nit.

It's every year is like a broken record. Oh with this guy and this guy coming in, We'll be very good next year. Well if that's how it has to be then so be it, I don't want to get on Mullin in only his 3rd year.
Next year however, in his 4th season, you can't bitch about Lavin leaving Chris 3 bench players, there is no more excuses. Mullin's 4th year, he has to do something, can anyone here say that 4 years isn't enough time?

I don't want to say that this season is over but if we lose @ Creighton and start conf play 0-3, can many people feel strong about getting to post season play? I can't.

Almost no one , including Seton Hall, expected this game to be this close. Obviously the Pirates took this game for granted expecting a blow out. Once again the three pointer doomed us even though our defense was much better then the Friar game. Thanks guys for your outstanding effort, making this a very enjoyable game.
Thank God Mullin kept " no hands" Yakwe on the bench. Even though Trimble was not involved in the scoring he played pretty good defense. Both these guys shouldn't be seeing playing time next year. The starters on both teams played most of the minutes. Once again, thanks for giving 100% plus effort.

Pro ball aspirations? I wouldn't choose him in a pick up game, along with Amar. And as for Alibecogvic how in the world did he get a scholie? Four years and he still stands straight up on defense.

Dear Oldschool,
I'm sure you've been through the same perennial promises followed by disappointment as all of us with this close but no cigar program but I never thought this would be an NCAA Tourney team even with Ponds and Lovett healthy. Partly because we have a shitty bench and partly because I don't think Mullin can win without talented players to camouflage his coaching weaknesses coupled with the most inexperienced college coaching staff in America.
Before the injuries we were going to be a borderline NIT team because of what I said above. Next year with all the depth and experience there would be no excuses for not finishing in the upper half of the conference or going to the NCAA. It is what it is.
What there is to worry about is the effect losing will have on unsigned players, unexpected departures and the effect of possible transfers like Jordan Tucker would have on incoming players. Few programs match the drama surrounding the future as St. John's. Don't expect things to change in the near future.
