Seton Hall Game

Just wondering where everyone is on the instructions to foul SH before they get off a 3. Up 3, you have about a 65% chance of winning, and a 35% chance of overtime by letting them shoot. Losing is almost off the table in regulation. Just using the approximate 3 point stats of the guys on the floor for the Hall. Overplay a few guys and contest, and the odds go up. By fouling, you add 2 factors: SJU is a so so shooting team from the line, and now you are dealing with added pressure. Plus, inbounding the ball opens up for a steal or a tie up, and then you can lose. We all saw that before. If you are the coach, what call do you make? Just thought leaving 4.9 on the clock was too much risk at that point.

I liked the strategy. 4.9 seconds was too long to leave on the clock, but I also think the instruction was to not let them get too close to the basket before fouling. It's hard to have a clock in your head when you are a defender. I am thinking that the foul was committed thinking there was less time on the clock. As it turns out the Pointer pass when he couldn't inbound was the headiest play of the game, and so was Sanchez to get a hand on it. As it turned out by pressuring the ball full court with 4.9 to go, SHU couldn't advance it very far. We did a great job on the man on that sequence. We all envisioned a 60 foot inbound pass a wide open shot for the win, or a foul. As it was I thought Pointer committed a foul at midcourt, but thankfully the refs didn't blow the whistle and decide the game on that.

Out of all the things that happened in this game, the biggest thing I saw was the impact Whitesell had coaching at the end of the game. At every play stoppage or timeout, he was the one talking to each individual player as well as the team. Every free throw he was there telling a player what to do. It seemed like he has finally stepped up and hopefully gained Lavin's full trust.

Interesting observation! I was beginning to wonder when the acquisition of Whitesell would begin to pay dividends!

The way GG made Teague pay and pay for every thing he got I thought was Whitesell. GG showed much better feet and determination than previously.

Really glad that Coach saw it fit to pull Balamou's redshirt season
He now has a better seat on the bench rather than behind it to watch the game

Mark, was thinking about the same thing but would not be surprised if redshirt is reclaimed as medical (Felix was hurt, tried to go, but injury flared, scenario).

Unfortunately, that would require some thought process by this administration  .

The only logical explanation was Lavin thought Sheed was gone. But, not everything Lavin does is logical.

Especially good to see Sampson regain some of his lost confidence. The kid can be a monster if he wants to.

Nice to simply get back in the win column today. However you get them, wins feel good and these guys deserved it. I'm sure this stretch hasn't been easy on them.

I was particularly impressed with D'angelo's midrange game last night. He made some unbelievably tough shots!

D Lo is such an old school player. He gets his points with savvy instead of in your face athleticism. Just wish he would stop the 3 point shots unless he had his feet set an inch behind the line. Never understood these guys who shoot 3's 2 feet or more behind the line. You get the same 3 points if your foot is just behind the line.

Some validity in your point, and some big holes. The validity is that the object in basketball was always to get the easiest shot possible - until the dawn of the three point shot. I remember once reading an opponent describe Oscar Robertson, by any measure one of the greatest players ever, and way ahead of his time. The opponent said that the Big O was so big (6'5" at the time was big for a guard), quick, and strong. If you gave him a 20 foot jumper, he'd work for 16. If you gave him 16, he wanted 12. If you gave him twelve he wanted 8, and if you gave him 8, he wanted a layup. The three point shot destroys that, with guys actually stepping backwards to shoot behind the arc.

The hole in your thinking, is that the college three point shot is ONLY 20'6". 8th grade girls can make a 3 from that distance, so a college player can easily shoot from 22-23 feet with ease. I take exception to these shots 4-6 feet behind the arc, but not a couple of feet.

I agree about the 3, Beast. The distance is not that great. If the defense is gonna guard you to the 3pt line, no big deal if a good shooter takes an uncontested one two feet back. Dlo's game is built on his confidence. Yet, people criticize him for being confident that he can make an open jumpshot.

As an aside, I think the coaching staff has been stressing to the players that if they have a good shot, they shoot take it with confidence. Dom has tried, of late, to take the open jumper, albeit with limited success. Greene, during the Dartmouth game, said that if he had a shot he was gonna take it. Some interpreted that as him just looking out for his own stats. I disagree. I think the point was that he is not gonna pass up a good shot.

Btw, Orlando was magnificent last night. Every time he took a 3, I yelled NO!, but they went in. He also went to the hoop aggressively and had some big rebounds. Gift was a man against a much bigger Teague. The only real negative was that Phil (and to a lesser extent, the other guards) could not stay in front of Gibbs. I was more confident when Branch was on him.

Well you have to give credit to Lavin, even though it might be obvious to most coaches, for finally pulling Greene, especially since Lavin seems to have a love affair w him.

Not looking to take away from a win, but Kevin W was right going bananas about SH's horrible transition defense last night. They failed to get back a ton of times, allowing us to take it to the hoop & avoid relying on our mediocre half court attack.

Another way to look at that is that we took advantage of a weakness on their part. Just as so many other teams have taken advantage of weaknesses on our part. ;)

it was great to finally get a BE win.

And it was encouraging to see that the emphasis in practice on closing out games and game ending out of bounds plays paid off. :eek:hmy:

I thought Pointers attempted steal was a clean hit on the ball.the ball . He was the one fouled after the tip on a push.

I like the way GG played Teague, bodying up. Is more forceful then Obekpa.

As I previously posted it was a stupid attempt at a steal but not surprising. You want to double team at half court be my guest but to take a chance at a game losing foul, absolutely stupid. As much as I enjoy Pointer's hustle he makes some very bad decisions.
And to say Lav allows him to take chances doesn't surprise me either.
Good to win finally. Have a good chance against Butler.

What we all expected from Sampson. Should have been in at the end of game, certainly needed his offense and boards.

Should of never came down to that anyway . We gotta hit free throws when it matters that's part of closing out games. As good as a free throw shooter that Dangelo is he seems to miss when it counts the most . Free throws wins games

Really glad that Coach saw it fit to pull Balamou's redshirt season
He now has a better seat on the bench rather than behind it to watch the game

That was a real disservice to Balamou. He seems like a good kid, so I am sorry he is collateral damage in the Mad, Mad, Mad World of Slick Steve Lavin.

I take exception to you calling our half court "mediocre". I mean......do you really think it is that good?

Couldn't even let a win go without a couple shots at Lavin, huh?
Unreal.
