Season Ticket Holders Changes 2025-26

Thanks, looking forward to listen.

I'd also be curious to hear:
  • What he thinks of realignment and how the Big East figures into it
  • Calculus for deciding games at MSG vs. Carnesseca & how many more games will be at MSG in future years (I'd love to hear about the nuance of tickets sold vs. tickets out and profitability but I understand that's not something you're getting on a podcast, lol)
  • NIL in terms of how they manage & balance the outsourced work from Flat Top and Storm Marketing, his role with finding donors, and if there's any plans in terms of trying to find additional "whales" like Repole
Thank you for this

Just some thoughts:

It would be helpful if he could give a sense of whether they think this will result in major moves in seat location (particularly at msg).

Relatedly, will people in certain locations be more like to be moved? Will people in certain plans (eg Gold, Silver, etc) be more likely to have their seats moved? (Obviously I know everyone is “moving” but talking more about competition for seats in those areas)

How do we find how many priority points we have at any given point? How do we ensure that’s accurate?

Can they provide us with a sense of what any given amount of priority points equals in actual priority (ie if you have 5,500 priority points you are #600, etc)?

Can they provide an estimate of priority points needed to sit in certain areas?

Can they accept conditional donations (ie I’ll donate $10k if I get section 117 rows 10 or lower)?
excellent questions, will have most of these asked

Ed Kull will be joining me next week on the podcast to discuss the reseating plan, house settlement and what's going to happen for season ticket holders.

If you have any questions that you'd like Ed to answer please fire away and I'll do my best to have him answer them.
- how do you not alienate the hard core season tix holders who've been attending for decades and see their yearly renewals as their contribution to the school, but can't afford to contribute to NIL.
- what more marketing collaborations can we expect in the future?
- how does he feel about the fact that RP is essentially on a day-to-day contract? he could wake up at any moment and decide he wants to retire
- how much of the NIL budget actually goes to men's basketball? i'm sure there's operating costs, paying for the other sports, etc...

The school should be able to.tell you how many priority points you have.

I think the best they could tell you is where you rank and what 10,000 more points would put you on the list.

The simple answer is once ticket demand surges, in a reseating announcement 3 or 4 months in advance, the idea is to generate donations. Donations will put season ticket holders in better shape than they would otherwise be.

Question for Dave to ask Kull: At 100 points per year and zero donations, is it fair that a 25 year season ticket holder get bumped for a $3000 donor?
I got a call last week and respectfully asked for my current points total and how it was calculated. After some discussion I was given an estimate but it appears they don’t have this information pulled together yet. They need it for the distribution of Big East tickets so it won’t be too much longer.

how many wins with those seats did we get your and how many nccaa's did we do you right by ?

They didn't have an answer for me when i called yesterday either, Which seems crazy.

They were able to tell me mine last fall. Then it didn't include other university donations, which now will be used for reseating according to the Kull letter.

To answer another question, in general universities frown on alums dangling donations as an exchange for something they want. Someone in development at another school told me a non-donating alum offered a $50,000 donation if they offered admissionbfor their kid. The answer was that offer would hurt their kid's chance of admission even though the school wouldn't make that deal.

Who knows, though? We had a big donor offer a $10 mm donation if we would hire a certain person. The person wasn't hired and the donation didn't come.

The reality is that the "donation" part of a season ticket may not be tax deductible because the buyer is getting something of value in return.
As the wins pile up, I'm sure a lot of STH will be looking to bump up their point totals. There's certain to be a bunch of pissed off fans.

I say this more with bemusement than anger or even frustration. I am fairly numb to dealing with SJU by now. Since the first Kull memo I have seen a lot of posts about how asking for money is a sign that SJU has moved beyond “Mom and Pop” status. I think if that is the bar SJU has been big time basically forever. I have gotten emails three times a week from them looking for money for as long as I can remember. It’s their core competency.

Now if moving forward from “Mom and Pop” requires being able to articulate something like point totals to people who received an email about the importance of point totals - then there is work to be done yet.

point totals on game threads count too

I understand and agree with much of your post.

You would think there would be a central database of donors, another one that tracks NIL contributions, and another tracking years as season tickets holders. If such data exists, it should be easy to pull together electronically. Clearly that data may exist, but much of it is pulled together manually.

Not sure how much forethought has been put into this.

For example, let's say I own an apparel company, and my NIL contribution is a business deduction where the business benefits. Should that be considered credited towards the executive who owns shares in that company and equalbto an individual NIL donor, who derives no benefit and no tax deduction?

Should a donor who supports a non athletic portion of the university, never been to a game but now finds it trendy be considered above a season ticket holder who has made more modest contributions for decades.

The funny thing about building a broad and sustainable donor base is that it's great when you go to the well to tap a wealthy donor who csn write an 8 figure check. The thing is, you never know which $200 donor will become wealthy enough to become your next 5,6,7 or 8 figure donor. So stuff like what you mention can turn people off forever.

We luve in an information age, and if you are trying to raise lots of money ln a sustainable growth trajectory , starting with data is the best place.

If you have any questions that you'd like Ed to answer please fire away and I'll do my best to have him answer them.
Q: Do you get the same number of priority points for making a contribution to the university as you do for making a NIL contribution? If so, why would anyone make a NIL contribution (which is not tax deductible), when they can get the same number of points for making a contribution to the University (which is tax deductible)?

Q: Do existing season ticket holders automatically get first choice at the reseating over non-season ticket holders who make contributions to the university or NIL?

Q: If you are not a current season ticket holder, but you were in the past, do you get any credit for your past seasons?

If a person uses the standard deduction, it does not matter. Situations vary, but for me there is no tax benefit at this time associated with my donations. Not getting involved with where best to donate, only clearing up why some would not care about that.

Will the MSG only plan be continued next year? (I assume so but would be nice to get confirmation given the reseating)

This is something I have been thinking about. If they are going to start awarding priority points for seating purposes to people who make charitable contributions to the university at large (which are tax deductible), then the IRS is going to have something to say about it. I strongly suspect that Kull and company have not thought this one through. Or else they are not communicating it properly.

I'm enjoying my seats this year because after 50 years they'll be gone.

These big donors make more in a day than I do in a year and they donate more than I make in 10. But please take another 10K from me. Doesn't matter those CC Bills won't get paid when I go bankrupt....

These are the feelings from fans I'll be asking Ed about. You're not alone.

But there has to be a balance between raising / needing $ to keep up with the times while also keeping the loyal fans around.

In the history of our esteemed University has this ever happened? I doubt it. Something like a pulse and a checkbook gets you in. Acceptance rate not the same as Georgetown's.
