Scrimmage vs. Rhode Island
This is bringing all the hype down to earth. No matter how you look at it
no matter how you slice it ,it was a dissappointment
Just curious since you must've been there to make such a statement, how did the guys look? How were the sets they were trying? Any new sets that you saw and didn't like? Did they press a lot in the back court throughout the game? Do you think they were going at 100 percent? I know the season is a few weeks away and this "scrimmage" means nothing, but I'm thinking maybe they will 15 games this year after this practice game. So, now that this year's spoken for, what are your thoughts on 2019?

The other positive I take from the stat sheet is that they pulled it together much better in the 2nd half.

A loss here is a plus so our guys don't get too high on themselves with the recent media attention.

Heron had a bad game and we lost. Not the end of the world.

We will need more production from Dixon going forward and do need Roberts to play a little. Not emamored with Trimble and would like to see his minutes reduced. Rather see Williams get them.

Rawdog, I'm actually happy to see Keita can score and looks like he can replace if not improve on Tariq's role here. Also happy to see great FT% and LJ is showing flashes of being a potent scorer. All I said was that the #25 team lost to the #78 team in a scrimmage and it's an early look that didn't count, but it was a look nonetheless. I never said or implied it's the end all be all. Mullin's coaching is still a major concern. Concern does not mean the building is on fire and panic. In fact, I highly doubt Heron ever goes 1-10 again this season so maybe he was just way off. Maybe the guys were told not to go 100%. Regardless, the coaching concerns will persist until winning starts washing them away. Very excited for the season to start.
Guys, it’s an October scrimmage. Need to step back from the ledge.
Lot of new pieces to blend together. If anyone thinks we're going to look like an elite team in the next couple months, i suggest you cover your eyes. But I'm confident there will be steady progress as these guys learn to play as a unit.
For anyone discouraged or concerned by any of the stats that came out of today's scrimmage, it could have been worse...

BREAKING: Jontay Porter tore his right ACL and MCL in today’s scrimmage against Southern Illinois. He’s out for the season. https://t.co/2UU5lrZRDM t=_self]https://t.co/2UU5lrZRDM— Alex Schiffer (@TheSchiffMan) https://twitter.com/TheSchiffMan/status/1054154655398277121?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw t=_self]October 21, 2018

That is terrible.
we can not afford bad games even if it was a scrimmage
That is simply not true. Scrimmages are the place for bad games. Why does NFL in preseason not look anything like the season? That’s just silly... scrimmages are a glorified practice with a more live environment. Unc just got hammered by Nova yet UNC is ranked a ton higher. It means nothing at this stage. Nothing at all.

Guess , your right they decided not to play at100% perhaps they decided we will run bad sets miss shots and yeah maybe lose
Look you maybe be happy with the results and can make many excuses and feel good but bottom line is the played their 1 st game although a scrimmage and lost From the chatter on the board we had mucho talent so I was expecting a win ,whenever they play I expect them to win was not looking to hear they lost and pt out all the faults right out of the box Doesn't mean I do not have faith in the team going forward

A loss sucks but it's really not a big deal, 5 guys on the stat sheet new. When the season starts and if er are having issues with the cupcakes then it's cause for concern especially if we are getting killed from behind the arc etc.

Not worried about Ponds lack of shots at all today. Maybe he was working more on moving the ball and trying to get others involved. If we have very little ball movement during the season, not closing out shooters not rebounding etc then freak out but today isnt cause for concern and last year wins or losses dont matter anymore so not worth bringing up. And if it was closed door scrimmage I'm just glad no-one died of heat stroke

It's all about the regular season

Actually, scrimmages don't count, so by definition we can afford to play badly in them. They aren't counted in our record, our ranking, our tournament resume or in any other way. Once they end, it's as if they never happened. I think I understand the point you are trying to make - we need to start handling business regardless of the setting, and I agree with that. But without actually seeing the game and just looking at a sheet of paper, there's literally a billion different series of events that could have led to today's final "score". So let's just be thankful we didn't have a bad injury like Missouri did and look forward to the start of the real games.

Shamorie needs to be under control with the ball in his hands if he is to be an NBA point guard. Having 6 turnovers is not good ball movement or getting others involved. In the midnight madness scrimmage Slick showed no serious moves or decision making. Everyone else did while having fun. Shamorie just went through the motions while clowning around like a Globetrotter. I'm not a fan of that blase' approach to the sport you are staking your future to.
From appearances it appears that some players, Shamorie included, may have deferred to Heron in this scrimmage with the effect of him maybe forcing shots he normally would not take.
We at least got to see what a game would be like without Mustapha being eligible because he was basically absent. So losing by 3 field goals with 4 new players was not as bad as it may appear.

Boy, the season can't get here soon enough. Glad by all accounts the team is healthy coming out of the scrimmage. I expect Shamorie knows what he needs to show the pro scouts this year and will be fully prepared to do so. Same for Mustapha & Justin. What we need for a breakout year is Clark to have a great senior year. Fingers crossed.
I doubt 4-21 combined from Clark and Heron (1-10) will happen much if ever again. Bad days happen...if Heron gave us any pulse of life we win this game albeit a close one. Not worried about him, just getting used to his new digs and playing with our guys IMO. I was actually very very happy to see Keita put up 15 points and 6 rebs (for what we are used to, this isn't terrible). He's at worst every bit as good as Owens without the blocking ability. At best he is clearly an upgrade. Also nice to see LJ's eye-opening scrimmage during tip-off wasn't an aberration. The kid can score.

Again, only a scrimmage and who knows how hard the guys played or if Mullin told them to take it easy a bit, but if we are to take this result somewhat seriously at all, I'd think it's more an indictment on our staff. If you have good talent time and time again and it just ain't working, it's not the players. Part of the coach's job is to mesh talent and no one does it better than Jay Wright.I'm cautiously optimistic...it seems we don't do well at all in scrimmages under Mullin. But who cares? It's only a scrimmage and doesn't count. What it does do though is make more people question if he will be able to take us where we need to be.
Agree

The typical play set up for Clark is to take his man outside for long shots. With his strength Mullin needs to also use him inside the paint more and gain better positioning for power moves. Jay Wright has made Eric Paschall an NBA prospect by using him in and out. Marvin is not as talented or dominating but I agree he needs a big year for us.

OMFG all this doom and gloom over what is essentially a pre season game. It means nothing, it is a warm up, Looking at the stat sheet and making assumptions for the season is like declaring your NFL team is going to the super bowl or going 0 and sixteen after the first pre season game. Please chill, enjoy the cup cakes we play early and realize it really starts to count late Dec / January.
