Sampson will fit right in in the NBA

Sampson has not played one minute of defense while he was in college, so he will fit right in with those in the NBA who do not play any defense either.

Pretty sure he shut down MCDERMOTT

and Pinkston...I get it that he didn't always put the necessary effort on the defensive end but I think he has the ability to play D when motivated to do so...

I really liked Sampson and think he is a big loss...I think he came in with too many AAU-like tendencies and the staff didn't break him

Not a fair comment at all -- Sampson's defense was dramatically improved this season. He was great against McDermott, and he played tough interior defense in several key games.

Revisionist history...it will be remembered that way, but Sampson was one of four guys that limited McDermott.
McDermott got his average point total--25--and he shot right at his average, 10-18 from the field. He also had no turnovers. Sampson shot 4-12 for eight points, only had 4 boards, and had four fouls. He played a good game defensively, but let's not make it something it wasn't...Sampson didn't shut him down, Isaiah Armwood shut him down (7 points, 2-12 shooting).

What is an AAU tendency?

I realize I am busting your chops a little bit but I sometimes wonder if you actually watch games ot just pour over stats and manipulate them for your use. Sampson kept McDermott from TOUCHING the ball for the last 8-10 minutes of a very important game for us; in any objective analysis that is shutting someone down. Because another player did better statistically over the course of a different game in no way shape or form diminishes or changes what Sampson did.

I am not going to say he did a bad job. He did very good...it was his best defensive effort in a St. John's uniform, and he did a great job denying McDermott the ball. With that written, McDermott missed a wide open three, wasn't getting his usual every whistle in his favor, and his teammates also failed to get him the rock. Sampson's best chance was to deny and, he did that great. When McDermott got the ball it was a different story. If a kid comes into a game averaging 25 and 55% shooting and gets that in the game...he wasn't shut down. He played normally.

One or two good efforts doesn't negate a season of poor defense and never boxing out.

Again, 25 points on over 50% shooting is not being shut down. What Isaiah Armwood did to McDermott was shutting him down: 2-12 and SEVEN POINTS on a neutral court. How is it competey forgotten that McDermott scored 39 on us on 15-26 shooting in the first game at home? Sampson didn't cover him the whole game then either, but when he did McDermott owned him.

I felt like he jogged back on defense most of the time, played defense only when motivated to do so and was going to shoot 99% of time once he got the ball...That said, I liked him and think he is a big loss

I don't see how he makes the NBA at this point.. He is not 19 so there isnt the upside factor going for him. I thought he was a good NCAA player, and a compliment player at that.He doesnt shoot foul shots well, he does run the open court well, and finishes well in the open court. In half court he has a very shaky med range game. he has no 3 ball, and is average at best in the low post.not known for his passing game, and definitely not a great rebounder. So he doesnt do any one thing great. He is not a lock down defender either..So the things that scouts look for are 1. upside potential(cross that off the list) 2. What does he do great( there isnt anything he does great 3. shooting( not consistant). The biggest thing working against him is that this draft is loaded and deep..there are no super studs, but lots of talent..

This is the same tired nonsense we get all the time around here. A guy leaves and then a bunch of posters talk about how bad he was at this or that.

Sampson was a good player for us -- not a superstar, but he was good. Its a big loss for our team. We can all nitpick if we want about whether he ran back on defense hard enough or about whether he SHUT DOWN McDermott or merely LIMITED him, but go back in time one week and every one of us were very happy with the prospect of Sampson playing the 4 for us next year.

Now that he's leaving (which I agree is a bad decision, by the way), he was an underachieving dog. Silliness.

Apparently you haven't read my posts on Sampson playing in the NBA the last two years. Three weeks ago I was told that it's a good thing he doesn't read my posts or he'd develop an inferiority complex.

I agree. Was happy enough to have him on the team even if he (and everyone else) never played to their press clippings. He was productive. But a very good college player does not equal the end of an NBA bench unless he does one thing better than the rest and Jakarr is a very good college player who doesn't do anything better than the rest, oh and he wasn't a GREAT college player. Gonna be tough, but he can certainly make some good coin if his passport is valid.

I am watching the Iowa St/UCONN game. There are five players (just in this one game) that I would draft before Jakarr.

Kane
Napier
Boatright
Hogue
Ejim
