SAMPSON & POINTER come thru in OT

Unfortunately many judge college players by whether they will make or succeed in the NBA and they are two entirely different games. Obviously, legal issues aside, the advent of the "one and done" has hurt college ball big time. Just look at how many times even top rated teams struggle to get out of final scores in the 50's. Most of that I attribute to the horrible coaching at the AAU level and "Prep" (read basketball factory) level where the emphasis is on individual skill rather than the team game. This makes it ridiculously easy for college coaches to create defensive schemes that shuts teams down. That's also why teams with "lesser talent" can compete like never before.

I know what Harrison and Sampson mean to this team but Sir Dom is my MVP. He does all the little things it takes to win - defense, blocks, gets to loose balls, rebounds, steals, leads fast breaks, and even scores. Who could ask for more. He only knows one way to play the game and unfortunately his aggressiveness leads to foul trouble. We need you in the game, big guy.

Not too long ago , people were crapping on Dom saying he didnt show much improvement, blah , blah , blah. Where are those people now?[/quote

Heck not too long ago Pointer threw bricks and was not part of our offense at all. Unbelievably he has turned his shooting completely around. What impresses me is his shot selection and confidence in scoring.
Looks like he has stayed after practice to improve his jumpers. And it's worked.

I said in the game thread...Pointer's free throws after the intentional foul basically won this game. Calm and swished...it was a beautiful thing.

Dom was smiling at the line. He knew he had those two. His confidence is soaring now and he combines it with balls-to-wall effort. Love the way he plays the game.

It seems to me Pointer is climbing up to the level of Harrison and Sampson - as far as energy and value.
one never knows which player will blossom - reminds me somewhat of Willie Glass and Billy Goodwin.

I forget how high he was ranked our of HS. Anyone recall?

thanks

At some point, I think ESPN had Dom ranked as high as 34, which made Dom the highest ranking recruit of the 2011 class, but I recall the rankings shifted around a lot, so not sure if the book closed with Dom being at that number.

ESPN had Pointer at #25 in their final rankings.

He was also the highest rated player in our 2011 class, per the RSCI.

By his senior year at SJ people will be comparing him to Michael Jordan.

He is a very good utility player but we need Jamal Branch to assume the leadership role and direct the offense with his dribble penetration and passing.

Maybe he can teach some of that shot selection to Phil.

I have a friend who tends to do what you've mentioned above. Even moreso (to said player), if he isn't a fan or not fond of that particular team. I've told him countless times that both are different games, and it's irrelevant to what a player is doing on the collegiate level.

I also agree with you, in reference to the shoddy coaching in AAU ball. It festers to the college game. I've been saying, as much, for a few seasons.

Dom a utility player like Ron, another guy who didn't care about numbers?

Ron Artest a utility player?

I love the way Dom has progressed also. Is it me or does he look a little taller this year than he did last year? He looks almost as tall as Sampson when they stand next to each other. He might have grown a few inches over the summer.

I know Ron more then a utility player, but his numbers don't blow anyone away. I also think Dom something more. I think Dom on the way to becoming all BE. I realize it remains to be seen.

Dom is becoming my favorite playere,he does it all. If he keeps improving like he has this year,he is going to be dangerous.

Agree looks taller to me. I remember against the hall he looked taller than Fuquan Edwin who I believe is listed as taller than dom.

I said it last year and it has been pointed out by others but Dom is on the Postell path. A guy who improved every year for four years and became a major factor to a strong team as a senior.

As fans, I think we can all feel really really good about Dom's progress this year and what we project for the next two (he will be a four year guy). Dave on JJ said that he is going to be a great senior one day, and that is becoming more apparent every day.

Dom's and Amir's progress will always be viewed in tandem. Coming into the year, I think that most on this board projected Amir as having more of an impact. One poster, and I forget who, noted that Amir's progress may be slowed by his playing baseball this past summer, while Dom was in the gym working on his game. Amir has had some nice moments this year, and he does a lot of things that go unnoticed at times, especially on the boards. But Dom's progress has been far greater.

Agreed. And in addition Postell also had that infectious energy, as Dom does .

Amir doesn't seem to have the same passion for the game as Dom does, but maybe it's just their personalities.

I loved Postell and understand the similarities pointed on this board, however, I believe Dom to be wayyyy ahead of Postell at this point in Postell's career. I actually believe that Dom has much more of an upside than others think. His comment about believing he's the baddest player on the court every game, is the difference between this year and last year. His athleticism has always been off the charts, but his confidence and basketball IQ at this level was lagging. I'm going out on a limb and predicting that Pointer will win C7 player of the year in his senior year EVEN if Otto Porter Jr. stays all 4 years.
