Rutgers Suspends Mike Rice

1) I don't think Hurley wants to walk into that black hole of a program. They have NEVER been to an NCAA game,

I thought Northwestern was the only BCS conf team to never dance?

Forgive me for not being clear. I meant since joining the Big East.

Marcus, gotta realize that many of us go back a lot further than you, and we don't automatically assume references to teams' histories are limited to the Big East era. Too many memories.

Do I see Danny Hurley in the wings?

I think it would look really bad on him, if he were to leave a major rebuilding project like URI, after just one season. That doesn't sway some coaches, though.

Is leaving after just two years, like he did at Wagner, really that much better? Besides, he'll be able to give everyone the same coach-speak we've heard over and over again: I've laid a solid foundation to turnaround the program: I'm leaving a program that's much stronger than when I came here; I've loved my time here and am only leaving because it's my dream job in my home state; blah, blah, blah.

Short of winning a conference title though, Hurley took Wagner about as far as they could go.

He's got a long way to go before he's anywhere near that point at URI.

You may be right, but I think Danny Hurley, like any other ambitious young coach in his position, has zero loyalty to URI (or any other school he has zero ties to other than a contract, or to recruits), and would bolt without hesitation if a job on a bigger stage (and more money, of course) were to be offered to him, especially if were home-state Rutgers, which would allow him to justify the move. Ideally, I would think his "dream job" would be Seton Hall, but at this point Willard's job seems more secure than Rice's. (Besides, like our own Fran Fraschilla, he could always leave one dream job for another should the Hall position open up down the road.)

I thought he hated being at Seton Hall. Not sure he would consider it a dream job.

Lol. Sorry. Just talking bout Big East days, that's all.

did not the rutgers team with mike dabney, eddie jordan, james bailey etc. go to the dance.

The team with Phil Sellers, Jordan, Dabney (not sure that James Bailey was there yet) went to final 4...they got waxed by Magic Johnson and Michigan State. But they had a great season -- undefeated...

They paraded around MSG with a Banner of smaller banners representing each team they had beaten...Even had the audacity to parade in front of our student section...I was a student at the time and myself and a bunch of other students, pulled it into our section...they were pissed and a bunch of their footballers headed over..forget what happened after that

CORRECTION: Rutgers was waxed by UCLA as redken correctly stated

That Rutgers team wasn't waxed by Magic Johnson and Michigan State, but by UCLA, 106-92. (UCLA lost the title game to Scott May's undefeated Indiana team.) That was 1976. In 1979, Magic & the Spartans waxed Penn in the Final Four. (That was the year we lost to Penn in the Elite 8, after having beaten Rutgers in the Sweet 16.)

Wow..my memory is going..You're right...Thanks for the correction..At least I recall the waxing LOL

I totally empathize.

Indiana beat Michigan in the Final. The RU \ UCLA game was the consolation.

Well, that only shows what a fickle thing one's memory is and that my empathy was well placed. On the other hand, I did have the right years (1976 vs. 1979) and the right national champions. (The '75-'76 Hoosiers with May and four other future NBAers and the '78-'79 Spartans with Magic & Greg Kelser both were special -- dare I say memorable -- teams.)
