Rumor from Dick Vitale "ND could say YES to ACC

Andy Katz on ESPN just talked about the ACC looking for one additional teams to get to 16 for mens bball. Uconn and Rutgers top two candidates.

ACC may consist of 2 8 team divisions:

ACC South

1.Fl State
2. Miami
3. Ga Tech
4. Clemson
5. Duke
6. Wake Forest
7. NC St
8. UNC Chapel Hill

ACC North
1. ND
2. BC
3. Uconn or Rutgers
4. Pitt
5. Syracuse
6. Maryland
7. UVA
8. Va Tech

Rutgers IMO not as strong football and hoops wise as Uconn, doubt they get picked up by the ACC. Uconn can establish a football rivalary with BC

Otis you really think ACC would add SJU over a Uconn for hoops? I think we are stuck in the Big Least for as long as this conference stays on life support.
Also what happens to Louisville and Cincy and Rutgers if Uconn bolts?

Will the Big 12 add either of those three schools?

This is a crushing blow to us!!! Prior to this season we could have offered the same deal to ND and they didn't take it.

Our inferiority complex is getting worse by the second.

my guess is that the 3 of the 5 ACC games ND football plays every year would be:

miami bring back the catholics vs convicts story line
BC (the only other Catholic school playing FBS football)
Pitt
then alternate 2 other schools every year

pathetic. Is it time to question Catholic ideals and morals? This is the second Catholic University to abandon
the league in pursuit of riches.

Look for Villanova to be a candidate. Catholic school that ND will back, great academics, big time hoops, have become a contender in lacrosse (a sport that matters in the ACC), not to mention an all around polished athletic program. Their football team won the I-AA National Championship in 2009 and continues to put players in the NFL (Brian Westbrook obviously the most recent stand out but have other players on rosters), not saying they would take them for football but their team is ready to make the jump and with the stadium in Chester expanding, they will have a home field, not to mention a deal could be made with one of the professional teams in Philly (Eagles, Phillies). Lastly, the Philadelphia market is huge and I believe the 4th largest market in the US, this will also be very attractive to the ACC. Rutgers could be a candidate but from all accounts they are looking more towards  the Big 10 and from what I hear Louisville is pretty much a done deal to the Big 12. As for UConn, I don't know how it works, but BC is said to be totally against that causing issues, and G'Town has the same problem with Maryland.

hi buck I think UConn makes the most sense for the ACC Villanova just cut a deal with temple who is ahead of them football wise.
I understand Nova's academics and what they offer on the hardwood, but UConn offers that in larger doses
(Larger fan base better facilities for both hoops and football, state funding)

I think UConn helps BC develop a healthy local football rivalry with BC.

BC is only one school in the acc if they are smart they welcome UConn with open arms? Why the hesitancy on their part?

Rutgers to the Big ten is interesting, Louisville to the Big 12 been rumored as well, where does that leave Cincy?

You can try and spin this any way you want, but this is not good news at all for the Big East.

I lost my respect for ND a long time ago when they stole Digger away from Fordham . Fordham was ready to become a powerhouse and would have been great for local hoops . They stole kelly from Cincinatti . Hopefully they will get their butts kicked all over the lot in the ACC . Perhaps they will have the same outcome as when they picked a high school coach from Cincy to be their head football coach . Go St. Johns .

Sadly, I remember hoping we just "sold out" for Notre Dame, added Army and Navy, and let them do what their doing with the ACC (except even with a bogus conference schedule let them play for a conference championship). The more I think of this, however, the more I remember James Michener's excellent book "Sports in America" where I'm pretty sure he previewed this about 25 years ago. I held a significant grudge towards Syracuse and BC for their initial flirtation with the ACC way back when, and I wish someone at the Big East would grow a pair and sue ESPN (and Disney) for contract infringement, but honestly at this point, who cares. Give me Georgetown, Seton Hall, Providence, Marquette, DePaul (we will want Chicago), and Temple as our basketball only schools, and see if other basketball only schools want to be a part of it (Gonzaga and Butler - which I just bought a house half a block from Hinkle fieldhouse). Forget about geography, try to keep some of the rivalries, but make sure the conference is so competitive in this sport that we continue to get the type of tv contracts that can sustain our athletic departments.

At least we're no longer regretting Penn State...

Sadly, I am worrying only about St. John's at this point. What does Lavin think while he is trying to recruit
an assistant coach  in which the conversation goes on about the great league and the new TV contract and
the commitment of all remaining members. Then the body blow by another esteemed member. This is not
West Virginia. Will St. John's be able to keep Lavin in the future with this mish mosh. I hope his integrity
is much higher than the schools that are leaving. Somewhere empty suits at ESPN are smiling. Another
member is gone and negotiations are going to be that much easier for ESPN, tougher for the league.
We all know another member will be leaving to balance the league. (ACC) Which one?
Meanwhile what does Aresco think now. He just was announced and spoke with all the members in rousing fashion to have another back stabber say good bye.
Gtown is being mentioned prominently regarding the new member.

I do not get the Georgetown rumour unless they are starting it themselves, uconn is a better fit for the ACC, a basketball powerhouse one of the
better football programs left in the Big East. A natural fit IMO, brings more to the table$$$ than Rutgers or Georgetown.

In case anyone hasn't notice, during the past 15 to 20 years the University of Miami has elevated itself into a very- very good academic school (#44 in US News undergrad rankings).

Are you Jay Wright?

ITS AMAZING TO ME HOW A SCHOOL CAN STEP IN S---,AND NOT GET DIRTY...TV AND NATIONAL PRESS SEEMS BRAIN DEAD TO THEIR CON GAME.......THEY HAVEN'T PLAYED FOR THE FB NAT CHAMPIONSHIP IN 20 YRS....AND SINCE THE 1940'S STOLEN COACHES AWAY FROM SCHOOLS(LEAHY,PARASEGHIAN,KELLY,DEVINE)......THIS DEAL TO PLAY ONLY 5 ACC TEAMS A YEAR REALLY SCREWS THE OTHER MEMBERS....MAYBE THE ACC LETS IN SAVANNAH STATE,JUST TO PLAY THE IRISH EACH YR...WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY GO 5-0.AND ANOTHER TEAM GOES 9-0 IN LEAGUE..ARE THEY TIED....DO THEY ALSO GET A SHOT AS AN INDEPENDENT TO PLAY FOR NAT CHAMPIONSHIP? THIS TEAM NO LONGER FIELDS THE PAUL HORNUNGS..THEY EVEN AREN'T IRISH,EXCEPT KELLY..AND THEY WILL LEAVE THE BIG EAST EARLY AS SOON AS THEY CAN BUY OUT SOME GAMES....R.I.P. BIG EAST..

Of course they didn't. They just came from a rousing meeting with everyone in the room on the same page.
This cloak and dagger has been going on behind the scenes all along. Now, when it comes from prestigious Catholic Universities like Notre Dame, you can imagine what is going on at the state and private places.
Each and every original Big East school will now have a new agenda.
Despicable conduct of all involved.
It makes the coming election look timid.

What do my fellow posters think of a Vatican Conf. (which others have addressed in prior posts) composed of:

St. John's, PC, G'Town, Nova, Marquette, DePaul, Xavier, Dayton, Seton Hall and St. Louis , or perhaps even add 2 other non BCS-football schools (i.e. "Bishop" Butler and Msg. U. Mass) to round it out to an even dozen..

For the most part: Similar missions, natural rivals, similar student bodies. I's not perfect, but....

In an ideal world, these schools would start their own conf. and leave Rutgers, Uconn, Louisville, Cincy and the others.

Yes, we will be raiding another conf. but we have to do, what we have to do.

Realize it will be labeled as second tier, but it makes a heck of a lot more sense than what we have (especially if UConn, or another institution, is invited to join the ACC or if the Big 10 looks to expand and adds RU) and we won't have to look over our shoulders for another school to leave if the ACC or another conf. decides to expand further.

Is anyone excited about UCF, SMU, Houston or Memphis joing BE hoops ??

Everyone will deny expanding their conf. until the day that they expand their conference.

We all know that Uconn, Rutgers, Louisville and Cincy would leave if they could. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the conf.  It's like they are trapped in a lousy marriage and are always going to be on the lookout for a way to escape their fate.
