From the Daily News:

With Orlando it is related to eligibility – age and eligibility are the two things that are being evaluated,” Lavin said, referring to the 24-year-old product of the Dominican Republic who many think has NBA potential. “With Marco it’s about being reinstated - paperwork is being evaluated.”

Sanchez is considered a potential starter. But when Lavin was asked how confident he is that the forward/center will be able to play for the Johnnies, he replied, I’'ve learned after 25 year not to even get into the speculation game.”

I'm re-posting the quote from the Daily News article written before the Concordia game.

to me its poorly written. does it mean ever or does it mean for the season opener? what was the lead in question to what lavin responded to? idk, i just hope that they get it cleared either way. if we wont have sanchez, it will suck, however at least they will know and can plan accordingly. i just can't stand the ncaa...eff them

Agreed -- it's incredibly confusing. I just hope it's resolved soon and in our favor. If Sanchez is ineligible I assume there is no way we redshirt Gift, right?

I have a hunch, if Sanchez (and Bourgault) isn't cleared by the time the team heads to Charleston (I really, really hope that isn't the case), then GG will be suiting up in the Charleston Classic.

I don't understand why the NCAA would wait until after the season starts to make a such a simple determination if the only issue is class classification (fr. or soph and Jr. or Sr.). Also, if that's the only issue and they're eligible regardless, then why wouldn't Lavin play them anyway. This just doesn't sound right. There must be more to this. There has to be something else going on. I understand not playing Gift because you want to wait and see if Sanchez has one or two years of eligibility left in order to make a redshirt determination. But, I don't understnd the Sanchez and Marco situation.

Yeah, I don't think you redshirt GG at that point, hence the reason he hasn't been redshirted as of yet. I wish with my job I could take as much time making decisions as the NCAA does. Geez I wouldn't have a frikkin job. It's so idiotic. What's so difficult to decide if someone is eligible, or what year they would be considered. The more I think about the snail-like pace of this whole thing the more it angers me.

I would like to know exactly what the eligibility issues are for each of these players. Does anyone know?

Yeah. Its been mentioned everywhere on here :)

They are eligible. The question is what CLASS they are. Is Sanchez a SR or JR and is Marco a JR or SOPH. And they are being held out of games until that is determined. As for why nobody knows and most of our fans can't understand why Lavin would do such a thing.

Please tip your waitress :)

Sorry moose, but I don't think you have it quite right. Numerous articles have stated that there are eligibility questions with Sanchez and lavin himself was quoted as stating that he would not predict that Sanchez would play. Fingers crossed.

Read STJ Basketball Twitter page. Again classification not eligibilty. I'm taking them over the poorly written article from Roger Rubin that started this thread. And where did Lavin specifically quote that he would not predict Sanchez would play? All I read was he would not make predictions and didn't specify Sanchez.

From Lavin's post game presser Tuesday night, he fully expects both to be in the rotation.

Did he say that? Great. I can't take anymore drama this year. As poision and others have been saying, it just doesn't seem to add up. Lavin is quoted as saying that it is two separate issues with Marco and Sanchez. He also responded when asked if Sanchez would ever play for SJU that he knew better than to speculate with the NCAA (or something to that effect). Seems to me a pretty strange thing to say if eligibility were assured.

He said WHEN we get them back , not if.

Let's assume the best case scenario for us -- Sanchez is eligible for two years. Given his age and talent, it's no sure thing that he'll be around for two years and it's certainly possible that Jakaar will be one and done (let's hope not). If Sanchez is deemed to be a junio, does Gift still redshirt?

Sounds from Lavin like no matter if Sanchez has one or two years, he wants to redshirt Gift.

Exactly, '98! I'm also of the belief the classificiation ruling on Sanchez doesn't have any bearing on Lavin wanting to redshirt GG.

He's holding him out, in case, we get (let's hope not) screwed by the NCAA, and Sanchez isn't able to play at all. Frankly, I would forget about redshirting GG, if Sanchez isn't cleared by next Thursday.
