Roger Rubin / Harrison / Daily News

The frustrating thing to me was that STJ was told they were fine. Hence the reason they were enrolled in classes. Now its like backtracking. Don't know how or why those things appear after the fact. Last year Amir, Karr and Pelle never enrolled because they were never cleared. That's where its different

Frustrating indeed!! Age issue? Did his birth certificate just materialize....for both SJ and the NCAA? Marco reinstated? from what????? There are folks at SJ not doing due-diligence....simple as that.

Not STJ 72. They were told both players are eligible. Simple as that. STJ doesn't care how many years they have left really they just want them playing.

Just read there's a NCAA rule that allows a player under investigation to practice and play with his team for a 45-day period while awaiting a decision. If correct, than why didn't Orlando and Marco play in the 2 games? There's talk at UCLA about Shabazz Muhammad being able to play while the NCAA completes their investigation on his eligibility.
Does anyone know for sure about this NCAA rule?

Roger Rubin struggles to read game notes-

Lets set record straight. From Official STJ Basketball Twitter Account. Key words- REGARDING CLASSIFICATION

O. Sanchez, M. Bourgault will not participate tonight as both await separate eligibility rulings from NCAA regarding classification. #stjbb

And might I ask, how long does it take to decide on a player's classification? Oh, I forgot it's the NCAA.

I would like to know exactly what the eligibility issues are for each of these players. Does anyone know?

Yeah. Its been mentioned everywhere on here :)

They are eligible. The question is what CLASS they are. Is Sanchez a SR or JR and is Marco a JR or SOPH. And they are being held out of games until that is determined. As for why nobody knows and most of our fans can't understand why Lavin would do such a thing.

Please tip your waitress :)

I agree , why hold them out if it only has to do with their classification.

Sorry moose, but I don't think you have it quite right. Numerous articles have stated that there are eligibility questions with Sanchez and lavin himself was quoted as stating that he would not predict that Sanchez would play. Fingers crossed.

To elaborate, lavin has stated that with Sanchez the issue relates to age and with Marco it relates to getting "reinstated" whatever that means.

Read STJ Basketball Twitter page. Again classification not eligibilty. I'm taking them over the poorly written article from Roger Rubin that started this thread. And where did Lavin specifically quote that he would not predict Sanchez would play? All I read was he would not make predictions and didn't specify Sanchez.

From Lavin's post game presser Tuesday night, he fully expects both to be in the rotation.

Lavin was quoted from the Sonoma post-game press conference in numerous articles. See my earlier post in this topic for the exact quote.

Did he say that? Great. I can't take anymore drama this year. As poision and others have been saying, it just doesn't seem to add up. Lavin is quoted as saying that it is two separate issues with Marco and Sanchez. He also responded when asked if Sanchez would ever play for SJU that he knew better than to speculate with the NCAA (or something to that effect). Seems to me a pretty strange thing to say if eligibility were assured.

I think at one point Lavin said that he wasn't sure if either would be able to suit up for the season opener against Detroit. But I don't remember reading any article that said he is not sure if they would suit up at all. Hopefully I am right about that. It would suck not to have them against Detroit, but not the end of the world.

I feel like I just saw a quote saying they are likely not playing vs. Detroit because the decision by the NCAA won't be made in time. I might be going crazy, but I'm sure I saw it somewhere.

There is a quote that states they are unlikely to be cleared by next Tuesday. We play in Charleston two days after the Detroit game. I'd love for them to be cleared by the time the team heads to South Carolina.

Let's hope. Marco is a very important piece since we really don't have a dependable 2nd perimeter shooter after D'Lo. Without him, opponents can dare us to shoot outside which puts much of the pressure on D'Lo, and then if he has a bad game we will struggle. Having a 2nd option like Marco is huge. Sanchez is obviously another very important piece and can be the difference between us being an NIT/NCAA team or one that falls just short. I really hope this team isn't in for a rude awakening vs. Detroit.

From the Daily News:

With Orlando it is related to eligibility – age and eligibility are the two things that are being evaluated,” Lavin said, referring to the 24-year-old product of the Dominican Republic who many think has NBA potential. “With Marco it’s about being reinstated - paperwork is being evaluated.”

Sanchez is considered a potential starter. But when Lavin was asked how confident he is that the forward/center will be able to play for the Johnnies, he replied, I’'ve learned after 25 year not to even get into the speculation game.”

I'm re-posting the quote from the Daily News article written before the Concordia game.

to me its poorly written. does it mean ever or does it mean for the season opener? what was the lead in question to what lavin responded to? idk, i just hope that they get it cleared either way. if we wont have sanchez, it will suck, however at least they will know and can plan accordingly. i just can't stand the ncaa...eff them

Agreed -- it's incredibly confusing. I just hope it's resolved soon and in our favor. If Sanchez is ineligible I assume there is no way we redshirt Gift, right?
