RJ Luis

if RJ returns to college, it will have to be a school that guarantees him sufficient time. Right now with roster expansion to 15 and our own roster growth, RJ will not find that time with us.

Sorry if someone posted this, but does St. John’s put up a banner for All Americans?
I know Louisville did for Russ Smith.. I think it took 5 damn years to do it. Pitino didn’t go but did do a video for Russ they played at his ceremony. That would certainly get RJ back.

Wait… hold on… if RJ was returning here…

You don’t think a returning BE POY and most likely 1st team ALL American… will get 28+ mpg here?

Please! RJ was the big east player of the year and arguably would be the top transfer in the portal. He’d have two years of our system under his belt. He’d have no trouble. getting 30 plus minutes.

I'm a RJ fan, but I have no basis to say one way or the other whether we "screwed" RJ "big time".
For 99.98% percent of his time here RJ was treated fine and he and the team had a mutually beneficial relationship.

Last impressions are what stick and all that changed in 4 minutes and 56 seconds. The unbelievable that happened was undeserved and way outside the realm of normalcy. RJ - please accept my humble apology on behalf of Johnny fans everywhere.

RJ seems like a great kid off the court. He’s handled the providence benching thing really well in the media. It’s so unfortunate that one game soured things here and I’m sure if RJ could do it over again he wouldn’t have given up on defense and would’ve listened to coaches/teammates and passed the ball a little.

I disagree with the post above that it’s last impressions that stick. I think when/if RJ comes back to an SJU game we as fans will cheer and celebrate what he helped give us this past season and not dwell on his performance in providence.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn there is more to this. In fact, I'd be surprised if there wasn't.
When you hardly hear anything significant, there is almost always more to the story one way or another.

Great kid, great season, high ceiling. I just root for the best for him and will hang my last hope on him returning home for his senior season, as unlikely as it appears.

On a loaded team, especially one that can shoot and spread the floor, we may see the best RJ yet. That would really hurt if his 2026 team is the last one standing - unless it's here.

I don’t think I have posted anything regarding RJ as I don’t understand what happened in the Arkansas game.

He played poorly but that can happen to any player. What was told to him by Pitino during the game or during the season is an unknown to me. I thought it was strange he ended the season on the bench but without additional details it is hard to know why.

I actually thought the highlight of the game was when he stole the ball and dunked it right before the half when we had a small lead. It was basically downhill for the game after that.

Other than Zuby no one played well offensively in that game. I am not sure who Luis was going to pass it to that was going to make an outside shot.

Anyway it’s over now, I enjoyed watching him play for the last two seasons. He was a good representative of the school. I wish him well and do hope he has a successful career whereever he winds up.

Its simple, Luis shot poorly as everyone else did ,BUT he did not play defense 2nd half. Many unchallenged layups by ARK .Ricks 1st Commandant, If you dont play defense you dont play, period! Star or no star!
When RJ was hurt last year, he would come in and play his game, and Coach used to complain that because he didnt practice he didnt carry out team plays. I saw that in Providence vs ARK, he was on his own planet!

Well good thing that excellent strategy of benching the BE POY when we just got back to down by 2 resulted in… checks notes… a nine point loss.

This board loves an old timey saying so ‘dance with the one that brought you’ and ‘what’s the sense of changing horses in midstream’ come to mind.

You might not win an NCAA tournament game with Luis but you’re sure as hell not winning with his replacements.

That’s a matter of opinion . When one player goes into the game and another comes out of the game , isn’t that a substitution ?

Were Prey and Lefty in the game for offense or defense ?

Prey for defense and Lefty for offense ?
He was benched for his overall play. RJ was a good player both offensively and defensively and he was substituted for by lesser players both offensively and defensively hence offense nor defensive was the motivation for the substitution.
